“Great stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2011

We stayed at this hotel for one night following a visit to the tea plantations.
The hotel really is very "Grand". Our room was very spacious and clean with beautiful big bathroom. The gardens were also very beautiful.
We took a short walk to the town, and in the evening we decided to stay in our room, where we ordered room service. We had 3 seafood risotto's and the price was very cheap. I believe we paid something like 735 rupees for each risotto. It was delicious!
There is a well stocked and reasonably priced gift shop in the hotel, as well as an optician and spa, although we didn't use the shops.
Overall, a very short but truly relaxing stay. Would highly recommend.

The hotel was clean and the room nicely decorated and quiet. Staff could be friendlier, particularly at the restaurant. Dining room was a bit overcrowded, specifically with groups. But food was good.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for one night during our Kuoni tour of the island, and if you can look past the rather dated decor, the place is quite charming with its grand dining hall and colonial feel. In keeping with such tradition, there is a billiard room with three full size tables - although unfortunately I had no time to make the most of them!

One downside was that there was no double bed (a common problem in Sri Lanka) and the singles could not be pushed together either, due to a built in bedside table in between them. Perhaps this is where tradition went a little too far!

Nuwara Eliya has been a very big surprise. Nice chilly wheather after 10 days of going around in the 'tropical' side of the country. The Grand Hotel is very nice, looking at the centre of the town from a small hill. It offers an amazing buffet. We suggest to have a beer in the wonderful pub just behind the hotel. I also tried the gym which is good.

As South Asians, we hardly experince a cold climate. But unfortunatley we visited Nuwara Eliya during the warm season. (Named Nuwara Eliya season in April). So if you need to experience a, some what a cold weather similarly in your country (mainly the Europeans) you better visit Nuwara Eliya from September to January. Why I stated 'some what' is because it won't snow for sure in Nuwara Eliya but the temprature is mainly below 15°C.

We chose Grand hotel to stay for 2 nights.(Star class hotels in nuwara Eliya is hard to find as there are only 5 as per my knowledge) We got to Nuwara Eliya from Colombo within a span of 30 minutes, thanks to the new Air Taxi Service.

The room was good & clean, but could not find basic Room amenities (Cotton buds, shaving tool, sewing kit etc....) But they have electic heaters to keep the room warm. Don't expect a dfferent buffet all the time. The same menu what you ate last night for dinner, will be served the very next day as well. Room service was a bit slow when we orderd some food to our room. Gave my favourite shirt & jeans to the laundry to be washed & they did not bill me as they messed up my shirt with some stain marks which I never had. No business center, so better take your lap top & you'll have to pay for the Wi-fi internet service.

Hotel staff helped us to find a place where they give mountain bikes on rent, for us to experience raw Nuwara Eliya.

All in all, the hotel could improve more & our stay was OK.

A Very tired hotel theat needs plenty of upgrading ( they have started to do this now Aug 2011) We were very dissapointed and although we only stayed for 1 night as part of a tour of Sri Lanka I am glad it was no longer.
Rooms very shabby and tired and bathroom so small had a problem getting in it
No Pool and hotel living on the past.
May be better in 12 mths when they have updated
