“Good place, great location - decent service”
Reviewed March 19, 2011

Nuwara Eliya by itself is an untouched hill town. It has a great charm!
The Grand Hotel was a good place to stay in. i am not sure if there are much better hotels there (i have heard the Tea Factory is a great place - but is much more exp also).
The hotel has two wings, and unfortunately, at the time we were visiting, one of the wings was under renovation. We got two rooms in the old wing, and the rooms were asking for some work!
It was not in tatters, but one could see that its not been uplifted for quite some time.
That said, the rooms were very neat and clean. The service was decent. There was a large corporate event happening, so i am assuming that caused a lot of diversion.
I liked the open park right outside the hotel entrance. Huge green lawn, with old styled chairs to relax. On a pleasant day, the sunshine felt very nice.
Its fairly close to the city centre too.
Overall i would say, that if you do not end up in one of "requires renovation" rooms, the hotel is decent value for money.

A very pleasant hotel though we had to ask for a fridge for the room which should be standard. Restuarant breakfast was very good as was the evening meal. Excellent location and receptive staff. Recommended.

This hotel has surprised me in many ways than one. Beautiful old and charming it has got all the makings of a country club in the alps. The reviews that speak of Terible service and bad rooms do not do this hotel any justice. It has all the charm and friendly atmosphere anyone can hope for anywhere.

After a magical rail journey up from Kandy, arrival at this hotel was pretty underwhelming. While the public areas are undeniably large and grand the overall feel is cold and uninviting, old fashioned without a feeling of the historic and not helped by the snooty reception staff who seem to have a very inflated sense of their own importance.
Our room although of a reasonable size was none too clean, borderline tatty and had all the (non) ambience of a 1950s faded English seaside "grand hotel" of a type that now thankfully are demolished. It made you imagine rather sordid wartime assignations, all thin walls and cold tea.
We had a bit of an explore and were more than a bit put off by the school dining hall feel of the huge restaurant and also not enticed by the evening's menu. We had a walk around bustling Nuwara Eliya and stopped in at the Grand Indian restaurant at the gate (part of the hotel) for a snack lunch which was good.
Later at reception we asked if, as half boarders, we could dine at the Grand indian, to be told that there would be a 900 rupee per person surcharge and that we MUST inform reception if we did this. This was on top of the 2050 rupees each we had already paid up front for the buffet. As mains at the GI were about 400 rupees each it didnt take long to work out that it would be cheaper to pay cash than to inform reception, which is what we did and very excellent both the food and service at the GI were.
Others below have mentioned the very unSri Lankan service in the Grand hotel. We were very taken in particular by the utterly miserable barman who could barely look at us, let alone crack a smile. Mind you, working in that poky windowless room for any length of time would make anyone unhappy.
This problem seemed to extend to the guests as well - being quite northern english we tend to smile and say hello to people we pass but here everyone seemed so downcast that they just looked straight through you. It was most unnerving and I was put in mind of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining, wondering if we were on some kind of ancient buial ground! Didn't see any axes though.........
Breakfast buffet had lots of choice but you had to get your own tea so the staff had only to seat you and clear away. Good job really as they couldn't seem to muster much enthusiasm for this task either. My warm feelings for the Grand were further improved by a wait of 20 minutes for the bags to be brought from the room on departure even though we were the only people leaving.
This hotel is really resting on its laurels of about 40 years ago. The decor needs some serious work and some of the staff need firing. We stopped in 10 hotels during our visit to SriLanka and this was far and away the worst. We were very glad to leave.

Good reception, easy check-in. Good staff, excellent shopping facilities.
Food selection was great,
Good breakfast with good variety for non-veg available. We asked them for special veg food, which they served at no extra cost..
The travel agent who arranged this hotel Miracle Tours, Sr Lanka should also be appreciated for suggesting this hotel. Tables are booked in advance and should not be a problem.
In future, we would definitely be staying in this hotel
