The tea country is really fabulous scenery and great for walking. Would recommend Nuwara Elia as a good base for exploring it and the train journey from Colombo is fantastic.

“It's a beautiful place”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

Lovely hill station in the middle of Srilanka, with awesome greenery around, and nice people. Winters is a great time to visit this place, and go around sites like New-Zealand Farm, World's End, and some beautiful waterfalls.

“Beautiful views and nice for a hike”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

You can take a bus from Nuwara Elia to tea country for about 30 rupees, or $0.25, get off at La Boucellie (or Labukele as was also written) on the Kandi Route.

When I arrived to the Mackwoods Tea Factory it was swamped with people and tourist buses. I didn't see where to get a tour of the factory so I just headed out to give myself a self-guided tour of the area. You can wander down in the tea fields and walk along the sprawling estate. After I reached the edge of the estate I just kept on going. Views along the road are stunning, and as you keep going they keep getting better.

Weather for me was perfect. Sunny early on and a little cloudy in the afternoon, but still dry and reasonably warm.

There are kids selling flowers and vegetables along the road. A lot of them ask for money and I don't feel comfortable giving money to kids, but you can give something productive like some pens or books or whatever you have. I just ended up buying fruit from roadside stands for myself and then half a mile later giving it to some kids who came up to talk. Quite a clever little cottage industry for them.

By the end I walked probably 10 km downhill stopping at farms and even going into one family's house for a cuppa and some mangoes. I didn't see an other tourists on the road aside from cyclists, so it was a nice way to meet some Nuwara Elians and get away from the hustle and bustle of the tea factory.

Then, once you return to La Boucellie you can get a free cup of tea at the cafeteria and buy some cakes or tea to bring home.

To get back to Nuwara Elia just wave down a bus going uphill and pay a further 30 rupees.

“How teas produced”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

this was very interesting how the tea is picked and what happens to it after its picked in the fields to the different sorts of tea.
The pickers work really hard under back breaking conditions on the fields that are done in slopes

“Delightful”

Spectacular scenery. Naturally it is colder in the mountains but jeans and a light jumper is all you need. It is worth getting up early to watch the sunrise.
