“comfortable and welcoming”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 21, 2014

This is a simple but comfortable lodge hotel and, having read through some of the earlier reports, must have had some renovations and a clean-up. We found it to be clean and the room was a good size, with everything we needed except a kettle and a few tea bags. It is not that far away from the town and a walk by the lake was worthwhile.

Galway Hotel is located approx 4kms out of the town, operate approx 50 rooms, small reception area, seating in lobby comfy, small car park, can use roadside parking at your risk, no lifts or elevators, 3 floors not ideal for persons with difficulty in climbing stairs, Spacious room, Not enough lighting, floors are a dark carpet can not decide whether clean or not, room 105 close to noisy motor, restaurant serves a choice of meals nothing special, friendly staff, stayed with a group by holidayplandmc Sri Lanka, overall some improvements necessary to this hotel.

We were booked into this hotel as part of a packaged tour, originating from Chennai, India. It's a quaint lodge, with a decent number of rooms. The rooms are small, but cozy. Since this sits atop a tea estate, and weather is around 15 degs on average, the rooms have no air-conditioning.

They have decent wifi in the lobby area , but cannot be accessed in the rooms.

The bathroom was clean. TV reception is poor.

The breakfast is only so so - and most things are self service. If you're looking for authentic Sri Lankan breakfast, you won't get it here.

The walls are thinner then you might like, and when I travelled there were a whole group of college kids partying in the common room, which kept me up.

In conclusion, this hotel is good for a night's stay en route to somewhere else. There's not much to do in the area besides taking a walk. It sits very close to the homes of the poor tea estate workers, and if you're expecting a scenic walk, this will not be the case. There are a number of stray dogs that'll tail you as well. But you might meet some charming inquisitive tea estate kids, who'll ask you where you're from, and try and score some goodies from you.

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the 3rd floor, because it's higher from the ground and you won't hear p...

This is another example of an unrefurbished Sri Lankan Hotel. Although the room was spacious, the cupboard didn't close, the lamp didn't work, the shower was odd, the windows hadn't been cleaned. And breakfast was pretty ordinary as well.

Our group of 30+1 tourists reached this hotel - our place of stay for 1 night around 7 p.m. Nuwara Eliya being a hill station the temperature was low & taking this into consideration thoughtfully, they served us tea as welcome drink which felt really nice. Rooms were quite decent, but felt slightly colder than cozy. There were no elevators, but the hotel staff was good enough to get our baggage upstairs. View from our room was also nice. The hotel is surrounded by lush greenery and beautiful tea and vegetable gardens. Only it is right adjust to the road where vehicles run - not much space for a compound or such. Interesting to see was the large thermometer showing temperature reading just outside the lobby. The night we reached was 15C and next morning was 10C. Showers were a bit unwieldy with the water switching quickly from hot to cold and in the cold weather it did not feel so nice. The lobby felt slightly stuffy and smoky with inadequate ventilation. Dinner and breakfast buffets were elaborate and quite good. A good touch was the live band which played songs on request at dinner. Couple of rooms allotted to our group members were not so easy to find. Room number directions were not proper. As such would like to give 3.5 rating overall.

We were a family of 3 travelling through Sri Lanka and spent only one night at the Galway. Looking back, it was the perfect length for this place, given that the rooms got a bit draughty at night and the showers were quite dodgy, switching from hot to icy cold water in the middle without warning. All 3 of us had to spend some time figuring out the correct positioning for hot water, and even then, we ran out of hot water in the middle of our bath, though we really had not consumed much water!

Breakfast was good, with a buffet including Continental and local options. There is no elevator, but the staff are happy to assist with luggage. However, there was quite a strong smell of fish in the corridor the minute we came out of our room, which was not very pleasant. It could not have come from the restaurant, as we did not smell it anywhere but on our floor. The bar is well equipped and we spent a pleasant evening using the wifi in the lobby, while enjoying our cocktails at the same time. We arrived at night, and it looked like the hotel was in the middle of a wooded area (about 2-3 kms from the main market), which would have been nice to explore in the morning, but it was too foggy to do so when we woke up. The British names of the bar and billiards room were an interesting twist. All in all, decent place to come back to at night if most of your time is spent in exploring the town itself.

It's an OK lodge. We spent less than 12 hrs there. The room was clean but a bit cold. The dinner was good, they have their own vegetable garden. For breakfast they had a western and Asian options. The water heater in the room was pretty small, so time for the shower for two people is limited. The service was courteous (since no elevator is available they drag your luggage to the third floor). I'd recommend this option if you are looking for a non-expensive option for a brief overnight stay.
