“Beautiful surroundings, interesting hotel”
Reviewed March 19, 2010

We stayed at the Tea Factory in Nuwara Eliya for 1 short night in March 2010. We arrived late in the afternoon and was sorry to leave early in the morning. Like everyone here has stated, the road leading to the hotel is brutal. On the way there, it took about 40 minutes from the main town to the hotel. 20 minutes the road is bumpy and then the last 20 minutes to the hotel the road is really bumpy and full of pot holes. It is ridiculous that the hotel as classy as they seem cannot fix this road. Everyone using it is going to and from the hotel.

The surroundings are beautiful and the temperature is divine compared to the rest of Sri Lanka which was hot and humid when we were there. It was great walking the grounds and in the English garden and admiring the view. The hotel is quaint and unique as it was a converted tea factory. If you are looking for an unusual experience in a tea plantation, this is an excellent choice. It is not your usual cookie cutter hotel.

The room was adequate. The bed was not plush but comfortable enough. The bathroom definitely needs updating. If it wasn't for the old bathroom, I would have given this hotel a 5 rating. There are no other frills in the room. Our view was to the back section of the hotel so not much to see.

We had half board which included a buffet breakfast and buffet dinner. Food was better than I expected. The buffet items were good and there were things cooked to order like stir fry and pasta which were both very good. The dessert spread was very good with excellent selection and everything I tried was delicious. The only complaint we had with the meal was the service for dinner. We asked for the bill for drinks with 3 different people and waited 30 minutes. After growing impatient, we got up from our table and it was only then that we were shown the bill. Service was definitely lacking.

The hotel does not have free wireless. We bought two one hour wireless cards in the lobby. The first one worked just fine but the other one did not work because they were having problems with the server. They told us the cards were not refundable so we wasted $2.50 as you can only use them in a 24 hour period. No big deal as they were not that expensive.

I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. The surroundings are beautiful and the hotel is very unique.

This is a very colonial looking hotel inside. We had a wonderful stay here during our family trip to Sri Lanka. The surrounding countryside is beautiful with tea plantations stretching out all around. Inside the service is excellent. We were greeted with cool drinks and a red spot on our foreheads!

The only downside to the hotel is a lack of a swimming pool. You can read more about our family holiday to Sri Lanka at: www.my-sri-lankan-holiday-truths.com/tea-factory-hotel-hill-country-sri-lanka.htm

I did not even get as far as staying at the Tea Factory but the experience continues! In January i booked to stay for 4 nights in March. I booked the tea factory becuase it claimed to provide a babysitting service and adjoining rooms ( my children are 1 and 2 1/2). I happily paid the deposit and thought nothing more of it. Someone then told me that there were no babysitting services there and sure enough on calling them again i was told it was not provided and we had not even been allocated the adjoining rooms and there were now none availiable. This was not ideal but i was grateful to have found out before arriving, so i asked for a refund. This is where the fun started, it is now 6 weeks from 1st being promised the refund and the saga continues.
I can't comment on the hotel but if you are not sure and booking the tea factory as a backup then be very careful or at least be aware you won't get a refund quickly ( if at all!)

on a side note the babysitting promise on many Sri Lankan hotel websites is normally a lie and when you get there they will tell you that they used to do it but don't anymore, be warned, if in doubt ring them at least twice to ask the question( you are likely to get different answers).

An interesting hotel, undoubtedly. An amazing conversion from working tea factory to elegant hotel. However, the four or five mile approach on an unbelievably rough track took almost an hour - each way - and was the most uncomfortable we've ever experienced. The welcome was charming, and the staff most helpful. Our room had been specially prepared (we were on honeymoon) and was quiet, and comfortable. Disappointment lay in the dining room later that evening. The food was the worst we experienced in Sri Lanka. Glad we only stayed one night.

Location
Located in the middle of nowhere via a 4km dirt track that was only just passable in a normal car.

Overall Impression
The hotels retains the look of a tea factory, i.e. a big ugly building with a tin roof. The surrounding location is excellent with picturesque views of the surrounding tea plantation.

Room
The room was ok, relatively clean and with a view. However, when we arrived the temperature was over 25c and bizarrely the heater was on. Managed to locate and switch off heater, but no air conditioning. Had to have windows open most of night to cool room, and hence mosquito bites in morning. There was a fair bit of noise, air room overlooked the back of the hotel and there was staff noise in the late evening, and in the morning various reversing bleepers, revving engines etc as the minibus drivers loaded up their flocks.

Food
We stayed on half board, which means buffet every night. The buffet was adequate but nothing really stands out to distinguish it form all the other buffet's we had during our stay

Service
Overall service was good, nothing particularly stands out.

This was a great place. It it a tea factory completely made into a 5 star hotel..
Hotel was great, staff was great, food was great, view was great, and the history was still "in the wall"
We were dressed up in sari and picked our own tea, a "must" to do, when staying on the Tea Factory.
A couple of things could have made the experience a little bit better
1. the road to get her was very bumpy..
2. the floor on the bathroom was incredibly cold (or maybe I didn't find the switch?)
