“Unique Tea Factory Hotel”
Reviewed February 12, 2010

The Tea Factory Hotel is one of the most unique ones i have ever been to....

A good 6 hour drive from Colombo, which is the only major downside to reaching Nuwara Eliya and a 20 min drive from there to Kandapola, brought us to this seemingly quaint hotel perched on a hill top...

But once we entered it, it was a different world altogether..

The courteous check-in staff offered us some nice spiced herbal tea and gave us a fantastic corner room with a 2 sided view of the valley on the 3rd floor... (they made our honeymoon a great memory)...

the hotel was previously a tea factory which was converted in to a 4 star hotel and they have still maintained the machinery and the look of the tea days.. its really interesting.. and the rooms are fantastic.. they have the best view of the entire green tea gardens with mist and clouds floating in to our room ... a great heater and excellent tea in the room.. the toilets were spankingly clean and it was amazing to be there..

the english breakfast in the wooden theme restaurant was a welcome change...

we even went tea plucking on the hotel's own tea gardens and got souvenir packet of tea's to take back...

the live band in the nights is entertaining... and the most interesting feature of the hotel is their Train Compartment Restaurant.. which even shakes during dinner.. quite an experience...

But the single most reason one should consider the Tea factory is location and weather.. just amazing.. a perfect romantic getaway...

For a vallue of US$ 100 per nite, nothing comes close to a better accomodation in Nuwara Eliya..

We reached there after a long journey, to be greeted with hot towels, excellent tea and smiling faces. We just loved the old elevator which took us to the room, the clouds were coming in our room, we were so excited that we threw our luggage and went out to explore. On our return we found our room done up again with the luggage nicely tucked with a petal placed on the bed. We also enrolled ourselves for a nature walk and saw 2 barking deer, quite exciting. On the last evening my wife was not feeling too well and i went down alone for the buffet, the restaurant supervisor who had been looking after us from the last couple of days was concerned. He insisted on sending a soup to the room which was really kind and it never made to our bill also. There were many such small gestures and we just cant get over this holiday. Thank you.

It seemed to take forever to get here, up the side of the mountains on the worst roads imaginable. When I finally stepped from the ramshackle car and looked out over the valley below, with the hillsides wreathed in mist and undulating like a dragon's back I thought "Wow, this was worth the 8 hours it took getting here from Negombo".

The reception area was stunning, with a huge caged lift, there is was polished wood everywhere and lots of pictures and paraphernalia relating to the hotels former life as a tea factory. Everything was immaculate. Our room was fairly small, but had a claw-foot bath nestling under an open window looking over the valley.

The restaurant served a more than adequete dinner, one of the best meals I had in Sri Lanka if I were being honest, the waiters were friendly and efficient and wgen we returned to our room someone had been in and stuffed my nightdress with a pillow, propped it up against the headboard of the bed and perched a toilet roll on top of it with a face drawn on it. My partner and I were convulsed with laughter. I loved the whole Tea Factory Experience.

We arrived at Tea Factory in the early afternoon and were welcomed with a lovely cup of spiced tea - the mountain was swathed in mist (which was the case for our 2 day stay) but the hotel had a cosy welcoming feel.
Our room was small but comfortable and warm (the heater was on) with good quality bed linen.
Once settled we had a snack in the bar where the fire had been lit. I have to say the steak baguette and chips was lovely - the chips the best I have ever eaten!
Dinner was buffet/carvery style with good choices and excellent Sri Lankan options. Both evenings there was "live music" in the dining room. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice and eggs cooked to order.
I particularly liked the "feel" of the hotel and think that the rebirth of the building from an old tea factory into a comfortable hotel is inspirational.
My only negative experience was the noise in the bedrooms - the wooden floors (although carpeted) seem to amplify sounds from the rooms above. Had this not been the case I would rate the rooms higher.

Tea Factory Hotel is a 30 minute drive from Nuwara Eliya along a goat track. The hotel is a tea factory that has been converted - the architect has done a wonderful job in that it still retains the factory elements such as beautiful polished wooden boards, wide open spaces, ancient lift but now has modern comforts. We were welcomed with herbal tea served in the very funky foyer by waiters weraing colonial uniforms. The rooms are a little small, but functional and the bathroom has magnificent views over the valley. The hotel is a little noisy because of the wooden boards. The restaurant has old world charm and the food was wonderful especially the Ummali desert. I wished we could have stayed longer so we could have enjoyed the facilities such as mountain bike riding, nature walks and tea picking .

A unique hotel in a unique location. We only had one night at the Tea Factory but it was a great experience. We had time to walk around the plantation and go to the small museum. The buffet was one of the better ones we had in Sri Lanka. The place is alone in novelty factor especially given the country is so famous for its tea. Service was efficient and the rooms clean. In total very relaxing and diferent.

This hotel is an experience - we experienced a 4km(?) somewhat nerve racking climb up a bumpy track at dusk in pouring rain (probably just as well we couldnt see the drop below) but arrived in to the most comfortable and unique place.- it is a beautifully converted tea factory with four storey atrium complete with polished and painted working machinery. The views from rooms and gardens the next morning were amazing.

The rooms are lovely with big windows over the valley views and the old engine in the reception space is started up every evening. You can get up at 8am and go and pick tea with the workers -it's all just good fun.

Dinner was excellent and when we slept in and missed breakfast cos of jet lag, the restaurant rang up to us and then sent a trolley up to our room loaded with goodies - no other hotel in the world did that for us so 7 stars to the satff for their attention and service.

Spa and massages were first class. Spend 2 nights here - it's lovely.
