“Heavenly Heritance”
Reviewed April 2, 2014

We stayed here for 2 nights and loved every minute. Great rooms, staff and food. The hotel owners have maintained the quirky old features of the factory which really adds to the charm as well as the beautiful setting in the beautiful tea plantations.

The hotel offers a 1hr Tea picking experience which is highly recommended and at £2.50 per person an absolute bargain the price also includeds a tour of the mini tea factory, with a nice pack of tea for you to take home on check-out. We also enjoyed the 2hr nature walk which takes you through the tea plantations - would recommend that you do this early morning or evening due to the hot weather.

Special mention to Mutuu was really helpful and couldnt do enough for us.

Loved this hotel !

Worth the extra trek from Muwara Eliya to this amazing hotel, for all the world a functioning tea factory from the outside, but stunningly converted into a luxury hotel in the inside, with some of the original machinery still operational. Very friendly and helpful staff, great food and of cpourse, amazing tea. Only thing to remember is that this is in the high tea country, so weather is much cooler than down by the coast. Take some warm clothes!

Room Tip: The higher floors have better views, when the mist clears in the morning.

Really enjoyed this hotel, which is more like a resort experience due to the fact it's quite isolated (about 30 mins drive from Nuwara Eliya... it's about 15 mins to the end of the hotel's drive!) but unique in every way. Quirky staff, quirky uniforms, Very memorable. Lovely comfortable rooms, very decent dinners - delicious curries! The only disappointment was the breakfasts - much of it was stale and dry and it was the same every morning (we stayed for 3 nights). The bread was also sometimes stale which was a shame. The Sri Lankan breakfasts were the best which I realised very quickly! There is no pool but nice walks around the place, you can pick tea, ride (cheap) bikes, go into Nuwara Eliya for afternoon tea at the Grand Hotel.. we enjoyed a 3 hour hike in Horton Plains National Park which we really enjoyed. Tip for the hotel if you read this : PLEASE replace the TV in the bar! We tried to watch the 20/20 world cup and couldn't believe there were flatscreens in the bedroom but the main bar TV was from the 1980s with awful reception. It just looked very unprofessional. But all in all, fab stay :)

This charming hotel, high in the mountains of Sri Lanka is surrounded on all sides by tea plantations which quilt the mountainsides with emerald green. The old factory elements and finishes have been well preserved and give a unique charm .Early evening demonstrations of the equipment add to the aura. Cinnamon log fires warm the public areas on cool evenings. Most rooms look out over the mountains and are generous in size .The meals were all excellent, with a great variety of delicious curries offered alongside more traditional foods.
The highlight of the visit is a chance to pick tea! Guests are outfitted in saris or longhis, given a basket to collect the tea and taken to a hillside with expert pickers to assist .Once some tea leaves have been collected, you return to a mini-factory where you can see your tea leaves go through the processes of drying, being rolled and separated and eventually, upon departure, you receive a bag of your "own" tea which is delicious. . Our group had a lot of fun with this exercise and quickly came to appreciate all that goes into that "cuppa".
Birdlife is of interest in this area as well.
We took the train from Kandy through the mts. to Nanu Oya to get there, a trip well worth adding to the itinerary for its beautiful scenery, but travel by first class coach for the most comfort. .

Room Tip: Ask for a mountain view. There was no pool in Feb. 2014, but one is to be added this coming year.

Having spent 3 nights at the Heritiance Kandalama we were expecting another 'different' experience and we certainly got one! As others have noted, the location of the converted tea factory is spectacular with amazing views over the tea plantations. Our room was beautiful and one of the only ones with a private terrace, however the level of noise from the room above was unacceptable and I wonder if this is a general problem as our driver didn't seem to be surprised when I mentioned this to him. I would agree with another reviewer about the bathroom needing a bit of a makeover. Some soundproofing would certainly help! Otherwise we loved it here. The bar and restaurant were really interestingly appointed using relics from the original factory and food and service were really good. It was the only place we were offered dosai (a sort of thin, crisp, south Indian pancake) for breakfast and they were delicious. The spiced tea was also excellent. We did try the putting green but it was in pretty poor condition.

We selected this for our first year wedding anniversary.
We reached the place mid-afternoon through misty mountains and winding roads.
It is amazing, a wonderful hotel was once a tea factory.
The surroundings are really beautiful , beautiful tea estates, various kind of flowers all around.
Organic Mini Tea factory is there ,where you can see the Tea making process, moreover you can buy tea from that place.
The staff and service were, really nice and the buffet dinner and breakfast was good. The welcome tea it was so tasty.
One night stay was perfect,it is a must-stay place

I felt that the Tea Factory Hotel is a place with so much potential but it was never steered in the right direction. From the moment our driver dropped us off here we felt a bit trapped. Yes, the location is cool - this great renovated tea factory up in the middle of all these tea fields but once there, you are literally stuck there with very little to do.

Our room was fine, however we really did not enjoy the weird music blasting at ungodly hours of the night and morning - not the mention the howling dogs to go with it. It really was not at all relaxing and we barely got any sleep because of this.

The restaurant seemed to try to cater for EVERYTHING...trying to do so much food, and the quality suffers... the "western" food really wasn't that great so I chose to then eat the rice and curry dishes which were fine. I didn't like how the waiters whipped the plates from us as soon as they thought we were finished eating.

The location of this place really is lovely but why not make some walking trails in the tea plantation or have some entertainment for guests in the evening? I really felt once we were back at the hotel there was nothing at all to do but wait for dinner which we were rushed in and out of by the staff!

I don't want to say this place was terrible, because it wasn't..it does have a lot going for it but I just felt it didn't quite work
