We chose Heritance Tea Factory over Grand Hotel when we visited its website and reading rousing comments from travelers at TripAdvisor. We were given Rm 317, and were surprised by the little room, though it soon turned out to be a pleasant surprise - though small it was fitted with modern facilities. And the genuinely caring staff made all the difference.

I was down with a severe case of gastritis the first night i arrived. We had to call in the doctor. After he left, we got a call from the restaurant supervisor who offered to bring me food knowing that i have taken ill and might not be able to go down for dinner. That really warmed my heart when my partner told me about it though I was writhing in pain from the gastritis. And soon indeed, a generous pot of hot milk and cream crackers carefully wrapped in cling-wrap were sent to our room. When we called to say the heater in the room was not working, the trainee house-keeping staff came over to help us with it and even brought in a small heater for good measure just in case the heater did not work. We were so grateful.

The restaurant staff were like old friends - coming to our table to chat and Mr Shane the Chef even took the trouble to show us what the vegetarian dishes were. Mr Nalendram the restaurant supervisor mentioned above was truly happy to see me well the next morning when I went down for breakfast. Young trainees also liven up the restaurant service.

Joe the pony and its handler Mr Kumara were two memorable friends that we made at Heritance Tea Factory. Though we declined to ride Joe, Mr Kumara was still very professional and guided us to walk with Joe on our 1km hike round the hotel.

We gave little presents to the staff whose care and service we enjoyed and were impressed when we were asked to write on the presents that these were indeed meant for the individuals the presents were given to. What discipline! Kudos to this good practice the hotel adopts.

We stayed here for 1 night during our tour of Sri Lanka. I love the sympathetic way the Tea Factory has been transformed into a hotel. I loved this hotel! It is in a gorgeous location and the staff were wonderful. The food was yummy and the dinning room had a great atmosphere. We had a beautiful room. I wished we had an extra night here.

We stayed here for 2 nights at the start of our holiday. As there had been an overbooking problem here on our original itinerary we agreed to doing the tour in reverse order (starting rather than finishing here) and in return the hotel agreed to giving us a complimentary room upgrade.

The location is stunning - it does take quite a while to get here once off the main road and feels a little like you're driving into the middle of nowhere, but once you turn a corner on the (almost) dirt track and the hotel comes into view it really is quite a magical sight.

The waiting staff are dressed in old colonial uniforms which adds to the atmosphere and all of the staff were very welcoming and helpful. On our arrival afternoon we decided to have afternoon high tea - wonderful sandwiches and cakes with (of course) a great choice of tea. Try the orange pikoe for a light yet tasty pick-me-up. One aspect of the afternoon tea we thought a little odd/quirky and amusing was that the plates were served apparently balancing on a polished tree branch fixed to a base - only the plates were actually glued to the branch.

The room was good with a view overlooking the front garden area and tea plantation beyond. We were very glad we had been given the upgrade as the room was rather small and we wondered how much smaller the standard room would have been. However this did not detract from the experience. The bed was comfortable, bathroom was smart and everything was well maintained.

It was quite a sight seeing the old tea drying machinery in the central atrium being started up every teatime - this gives you a good idea of how some of it would have looked when the factory was still in use.

The gardens are spectacular and you can take a guided walk through and pick your own tea if you want.

Food and service was great with attentive staff (buffet with regularly changing menu in the main restaurant), but the highlight on our second night was the set menu in the converted train carriage at the rear of the restaurant entitled "Dining on Wheels". 8 courses plus tea/coffee and liqueur for RS5000 per person, described as a "culinary trip around the world".

Peshparaj is your conductor-come-waiter and (together with his colleagues) provides a highly polished and somewhat amusing service - they whistle you aboard (and if you want to get off to pay a visit to the little boys/girls room!) and even rock the train gently from time to time. The music is also accompanied by occasional train noise soundtrack. All in all hugely enjoyable so thank you to Peshparaj for this - book as soon as you get there, if not before, as they only seat 4 booths per night and it is understandably popular.

Room Tip: All rooms have good views. If you're a light sleeper and are in need of an afternoon nap whilst...

For an actual Tea Factory (Converted to a Hotel of course) the hotel provides a great amount of luxuries. It’s only about 10Km from the Nuwara Eliya town and surely worth the trip. They have preserved the Original Tea Factory exteriors and there is a mini organic tea factory where you can make your own tea (Which you your self will pluck). Also don’t forget to take a stroll in the tea estates (misty mornings are the best time to do so)

Room Tip: Corner rooms have a great view.

This hotel is in a wonderful location. We had an end room with breathtaking views on all sides. We went for a nature walk which was interesting and you are also able to go tea picking. The staff are helpful and friendly, the food and atmosphere excellent.

Room Tip: The rooms at the end of hotel have views on three sides.
