We stayed at the Tea Factory for one night which to be honest was long enough!!! We arrived in thick fog and rain and it was freezing cold, although the staff offered a warm welcome with a hot facecloth and a cup of tea!!
The hotel is extremely isolated and with the weather being so bad we were stranded, the reception area and bar were very cold during the afternoon. We had lunch in the restaurant and although it was not a religious holiday they were very reluncatant to serve a glass of beer with our meal. We had a mini bar in our room and it was MINI.... one can of beer, one bottle of coke and a bottle of Red Bull, we had 2 pint glasses but nothing to put in it!!
In fairness the evening meal was very good and the wood burner made the restaurant very warm, we had live entertainment, were happliy served beer/wine so a very pleasant evening.
The next morning we woke to sunshine and the views were amazing , so the hotel did have a much better feel and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. We would suggest that one night here is long enough, it is very quirky and different but take a jumper!!!

A fabulous stay in an unusual hotel for my birthday as part of our tour. Lots to do nearby including things run by the hotel itself.
Lovely bedrooms with great views over the tea plantations. Good choice of food in the dining room and lovely service by all the friendly staff. On my brthday they all wanted to shake hands and wish me well.
Well worth the effort of getting there along difficult roads.

Room Tip: We had a standard room which was lovely with great views but the corner rooms (upgrade) are even bet...

Spent one night here. Well worth the journey up through the tea plantations for the views. Loved seeing all the local vegetable gardens and stalls at the roadside. We thought the hotel was fascinating - the way it had been converted and we enjoyed looking at all the old photos in the basement. The rooms are quite small but very comfortable. Had a lovely dinner and breakfast as the restaurant is smaller than a lot of hotels and more roomy. No complaints about the food. Nne of our party slept very well here - we wondered if it was due to the altitude

The drive up to the hotel is over 3km from the main road on a single track road but, of course this is Sri Lanka so it is two way and even used by buses on a road that is barely able to take one going one way. Our first drive up to the hotel took 30 minutes for the 3km due to us and about six other cars meeting a bus coming the opposite way and when you have a several hundred feet drop on one side and a deep drainage ditch on the other it gets a bit hairy!

Our first view of the hotel was "What the hell are we going to?" The ex factory is still clad in corrugated steel and painted a drab grey and sat on the top of the hill shrouded in mist. Thoughts of the Bates motel in Psycho sprang to to mind.

However, once is inside, iy becomes obvious that the change to a hotel and has been done thoughtfully and tastefully. Lots of the old features such as the lift have been retained and all the mod cons of a hotel introduced.

We arrived back early one day and fancied a snack so we ordered the cheese on toast at the bar. It took a while to arrive but the see the photograph below - three rounds of cheese with spices and chips, all for about £2.

Everything about the hotel was great - service, food, comfort and facilities.

We recently stayed at the hotel as part of a 2 week touring trip with my wife and 3 kids. We had enormous problems with the bookings as they allocated us 2 rooms with single beds. Given that the rooms cost US$250 per night this seemed pretty unreasonable. We did get the booking resolved but it took 1 hr of arguing with the duty manager. I should say the atmosphere in excellent but definitely not one for families.

Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for your comment.

We regret very much that you have had problems with your booking. However, when inquired into the details of your booking we noted that your reservation had been made for 02 single rooms through the web according to which we had allocated the rooms. Upon arrival at the hotel there were 02 adults and 03children.

As we were fully booked on the date of your arrival, we did not have any other suitable room that could have been offered to you hence the only option available was the Junior suite, which you agreed to take at a supplement charge of US$ 250. We sincerely trust you would understand that the circumstances were beyond our control.

Thank you very much once again for your comment. Please do visit us once again with your family in the future in order we could make up for any disappointments that you may have had during your stay.

The location of the hotel is outstanding high among the tea plantations, and the views are beautiful, sometimes obscured late in the afternoon by the mist that rises mysteriously. The drive to the hotel is also beautiful, although the entire region, with some more distant exceptions, has turned into such a tourist draw (including me, of course) that the experience is not satisfying. The tea factories open to visitors are crammed with tour buses, the restaurants are awful, etc. This, of course, is not the fault of Heritance Tea Factory, but it would make me think twice about even visiting. The hotel itself is fine, in need of a makeover, especially the rooms which are cramped, old-fashioned and somewhat raggedy (for the price and the category). The buffet dinner and breakfast are excellent, never feeling overly crowded as others can be, with a selection big enough to provide nice choices but not so large that it is overwhelming and detrimental to the quality of the food. Perhaps some of the best food I have had in Sri Lanka. The service in the restaurant, as everywhere, was essentially flawless. Live music in the restaurant was not as painful as in other places (see review of Kandalama), but also simply not necessary (one more version of the unescapable, in Sri Lanka, "Unchained Melody." One last note concerning the serving of alcohol (or lack thereof) on the first night, in the common areas, due to a Muslim holiday: this is perfectly understandable, and travelers should adapt to local customs in such instance. However some advance notice (at reservation time? at check-in? a note in the room?) would have caught the foreign guests (a vast majority during my stay) less by surprise, and avoided some tension.

Please allow time to get here! It takes a while to drive through the mountains to the hotel but this hotel is well worth the journey
We stayed for 2 nights but could have easily stayed 1 or 2 nights longer. The rooms are average but everything else is well above. The food is excellent. Try the romantic dinner for 2 in the train carriage. It's SO cheesy but a lot of fun
There are plenty of other things to do. We loved just walking around.
