“TERRIBLE”
Reviewed March 25, 2013

We called ahead and reserved a room a few weeks in advance, but upon arrival we were told that the hotel was booked and they had no record of our reservation. The manager was completely rude and unhelpful and told us that the situation was our fault because we didn't get the name of the person we spoke to on the phone. Oh and on our way out we heard guests complaining that their bathroom was flooded so maybe it was a blessing in disguise.

Lost our reservation, were completely unapologetic about the whole thing. As we were leaving, saw another guest complaining about her bathroom being flooded. Interior is rather shabby and doesn't live up to the exterior and gardens.

Dinner, accommodation and breakfast will set two of you back USD250. The club is owned by local business men and our USD250 was clearly used as a subsidy for their enjoyment. Double standards have always irked me but I was willing to bend because the throwback colonial ambiance makes a good first impression.... but the cracks soon appear... both dinner and breakfast were very disappointing summed up by tea being DIY with Dilmah in a sachet. With military efficiency everything closes at 23.00 including the billiard room and reading room. The water is not hot so no colonial tea planter hot bath experience. We regretted the decision to stay there. Quite the opposite of what we experienced at the Hill Range Club in Munnar, this one is the real thing.

Room Tip: The standard room we were offered was above the kitchen, you have no choice but to take the superior...

Located on the top of the hill in Nuwara Eliya this hotel will take you back in time, offering you a great colonial experience! The hotel is kept in perfect conditions as many years ago whn brits were living here! The food at the hotel' s restaurant is very delicious, just keep in mind thr s a dress code ;) I totally recommend it!

i had dinner here in Feb last year but stayed next door at the Grand. As I was here with friends this year, I thought it would be fun to stay - what an error. We had requested rooms overlooking the gardens, so we had a lovely view but nothing else. The bedrooms were very faded and the furniture looked as if it could do with a shampoo. The bathrooms were worse - a chipped and none too clean bath and a shower with a plastic curtain.
There is a notice on the ground floor stating that this is a hotel with all modern facilities - I presume that they are referring to WIFI because everything else is terribly faded.
Being English, I enjoy " the colonial past" but this is just past it. I also dread to think what other nationalities must think of the " English" food - it is appaling - we have not had food, in Britain, like that since the 1950s.
Don't have the English breakfast - it was inedible. Maybe, the Sri Lankan might be better but that has to be ordered the night before.
The only good point was the hot water bottle in the bed !

I shall not forget the hilarious sight of the men in our party in their borrowed 1970 s style jackets and ties.... Insisted upon if you wish to eat in the dining room. Unfortunately, he food isn't worth it. It's hard to describe the style of cuisine...maybe English school dinners circa 1955.
Our room was comfortable, and it was a delight to find hot water bottles in the bed and a fire on in the room, as the evenings in Nuwara Eliya can be cold.
The Hill Club does retain some interesting colonial atmosphere, the building itself is lovely and it is set in beautiful gardens. The worst aspect of this place though is that Sri Lankan people are not allowed in unless they are members....this is inexcusable and for that reason We would not stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front
