I hated it, my partner loved it! I guess this explains the title.

Pros:
-classy old traditional British-style building
-beautiful garden
-warm rooms (quite important as temperatures in Nuwara Eliya can drop quite drastically)
-no staff running behind you to get tips
-dvds rental (but do you really need it on holidays to Sri Lanka?)

Cons:
-BEHAVIOUR OF THE STAFF - so patronising for all the locals!!! they try to behave like in the old times, they want to keep the British style but forgetting that slavery etc. is GONE in western world.
I hated every minute spent in this hotel, and if it wasn't for my partner, I would have changed it. our driver (local) could not enter the hotel because he was a local person despite me inviting him
-accommodation for drivers costs (usually in Sri Lanka it's complementary)
-expensive (including WIFI)
-you cannot eat diner in the restaurant unless man wears a tie and woman puts on a nice dress
-breakfast - served and small

I would not have normally chosen to stay here but this was a one night stop on a group tour. Personally I found the place out of date and did not like the decor. It has a pretentious atmosphere and I didn't like the rules and regulations over dining and dress codes. I like dressing up and having first class service but I expect the food and service to match this - in the case it fell very short. The food was poor and arrived at different times with poor service.

The bar, lobby, and library are very nice. Free WiFi in library. However, the rooms are small and basic. Thankfully they provide heaters, because it gets cold at night. Our group chose to do the fine dining and borrowed dinner attire. Unfortunately, we had problems with the food and service.

The sun-dried tomato pasta was served with tomatoes that had not been rehydrated! They were completely inedible. When people refused to pay, they tried to offer free dessert instead of removing the entree charge. We ordered ahead of time, but still had slow, uneven service with our group. I don't recommend the custard dessert.

No safe in the room, but a hair dryer was provided. It was nice to get out of the heat by staying at this high elevation (6500') hotel. However, I was thankful we only stayed one night.

On a previous visit to Sri Lanka we had called into view The Hill Club and were shown a gorgeous room..On our return visit whilst celebrating Dickie 50Th Birthday,we were booked a night's stay as part of our tour...What a disappointment!! We were shown to our room at the side of the building,A1,Very disappointed to see twin beds, these were pushed together to make One massive bed with tightly tucked in sheets! A Room without a view! Awful!
We were told we couldn't eat in the hotel as Dickie didn't have smart trousers to wear, our only option was room service! We were given a menu.I had a cheese and tomato sandwich as my veggie option! Dickie a burger, these were both served with a dozen fries..on the menu it gave the cost as a total of 730Rs when we got the bill it said 1790Rs! this was because we had been shown the "members" menu and payed the Non Members price!
Bedtime! Cold plastic coated mattress..cold room..lights on all night outside the windows and a generator going all night underneath our room which kept us awake..Really Horrible cold, noisy nights Non Sleep
Breakfast...Average..
When we tried to question the bill, the waiter that gave us the menu was summoned and made to feel he should pay for the "mistake" so of course we payed! The night manager was No help..And when the "manager did arrive was NO help at all.
We complained about the room...Shoulders were shrugged!
Told them we would put a bad review on trip advisor...not bothered!!!
$160 a night....save your money!!!

If you like heritage hotels which have been very well maintained , both in terms of the building as well as ambience and club rules of a bygone era , then you will love the Hill Club.

If you are looking for modern, swish, 5 star luxury , you will not find it here.

The Hill Club is a members- only club, and tourists are allowed temporary membership. The rooms, service and food are very good and the gardens are lovely as well. The staff go out of their way to be helpful.

The town of Nuwara Eliya is situated in Sri Lanka's central hills and afford easy access to sights in the area -- tea plantations, Hakgala Gardens, Horton Plains, Nanu Oya to Badulla scenic railway etc.

This is a great place to relax and be pampered -- slow travel at its best!

Room Tip: Choose the rooms in the Main Wing for views over the lawn , however the stairs are steep. Rooms in...

We stayed at this hotel after getting compensated by Jetwing St. Andrews .. It was built in the 17th or 18th century! Old yes, but very charming! It makes you feel like you still live in that time :) .. We reached at night, we were impressed by the room, yet it was cold & the heater we had in the room hardly provided any heat! Room was clean yes, but the toilet wasn't that much clean plus the shower is so tiny for one person & it leaks so bad! If you wish to eat at any of their 2 restaurants you will need to have formal clothes, for men & women! We just ordered room service, cuz we didn't know about this rule, hence didn't have any formal clothes! The food is very delicious & somewhat average price .. We didn't have the chance to check out other facilities in the hotel; as we were tired the night we reached & spent the whole day out next day ..

We had a very bad experience at Horton Plain park the next day, & the hotel staff were very nice & helpful when we reached back in a miserable situation! They accompanied us to our rooms, & provided us with hot towels & hot water bags .. They got tea & food right away & made sure we were all ok & comfy again .. I thank them SO much for their effort!

Room Tip: Rooms are lovely in general .. Just make sure to have a big shower, or a renovated toilet .. Also, i...

We stayed two nights here as part of a tour. The decorations are warm and stodgy, but in a good way. Our room had a great view of the front garden. The ceilings in the room are huge! The bathroom is huge and has a nice shower. Everything was very clean. The staff was nice and never made us feel out of place. We ate at the informal dining room and it was quite good. We ate off of the fixed menu each night and that worked out well. The table next to us ordered from the a la carte menu and they had lots of complaints. The white-glove waiters for dinner were attentive to say the least.

Being served breakfast in courses was a little annoying. Couldn't they just serve the fruit, toast and eggs at the same time? Overall it was a good experience of the old empire.
