The Unique Cottages in Nuwara Eliya is a lovely looking small boutique hotel in what the locals in Sri Lanka would call Little England. This is because of it's cooler climate due to Nuwara Eliya being located high in the hill and tea growing region. We stayed only one night enroute from Kandy to Hikkaduwa and visited a tea plantation and Horton's Plain whilst there.
Overall we were slightly disappointed with the UC hotel for a number of small but annoying reasons. Nuwara Eliya's climate whilst cooler than the rest of Sri Lanka does warrant AC during the day and there was none in the hotel and although there was a small portable unit supplied in the room, this had a minimal effect on the room temperature. The hotel had no pool although it did have a lovely garden at the front to relax in but only uncomfortable garden seating to sit on. There were no tea making facilities in the bedroom unlike all the other hotel's we stayed in during our trip.
We ate in the hotel restaurant during our one night stay but unfortunately we were presented with a take or leave it "chicken or fish" dish. We chose the chicken and had a disappointing plain grilled chicken and chips with a green vegetable. We asked about a curry and were surprisingly told that it would take too long to prepare. The bedroom flooring was unusually, a long pile carpet which felt tacky and uncomfortable underfoot. The view from the bedroom was of the pleasant and tidy vegetable garden but also of a partially completed / abandoned / overgrown / litter strewn house next door.
On a positive note, the hotel was an impressive well maintained building which was located 10 minutes from the centre of Nuwara Eliya. The bedroom was clean, large and spacious with a twin Jacuzzi and wet room which included a shower. There was a large separate toilet as well. There was a spacious kingsize bed with comfortable bed linen. The hotel staff were excellent and very attentive to our every need. The hotel was spotless and although I have highlighted a number of what I would say are small deficiencies (not including no AC and the lack of a pool!), these could easily and quickly be rectified by the owners.
Overall as stated previously, a little disappointing but not a bad experience by any means, probably more a victim of the high standards that we encountered in the other hotels during our Sri Lankan trip.
