“A nice hotel in Little England”
Reviewed March 26, 2014 via mobile

The Unique Cottages in Nuwara Eliya is a lovely looking small boutique hotel in what the locals in Sri Lanka would call Little England. This is because of it's cooler climate due to Nuwara Eliya being located high in the hill and tea growing region. We stayed only one night enroute from Kandy to Hikkaduwa and visited a tea plantation and Horton's Plain whilst there.

Overall we were slightly disappointed with the UC hotel for a number of small but annoying reasons. Nuwara Eliya's climate whilst cooler than the rest of Sri Lanka does warrant AC during the day and there was none in the hotel and although there was a small portable unit supplied in the room, this had a minimal effect on the room temperature. The hotel had no pool although it did have a lovely garden at the front to relax in but only uncomfortable garden seating to sit on. There were no tea making facilities in the bedroom unlike all the other hotel's we stayed in during our trip.
We ate in the hotel restaurant during our one night stay but unfortunately we were presented with a take or leave it "chicken or fish" dish. We chose the chicken and had a disappointing plain grilled chicken and chips with a green vegetable. We asked about a curry and were surprisingly told that it would take too long to prepare. The bedroom flooring was unusually, a long pile carpet which felt tacky and uncomfortable underfoot. The view from the bedroom was of the pleasant and tidy vegetable garden but also of a partially completed / abandoned / overgrown / litter strewn house next door.
On a positive note, the hotel was an impressive well maintained building which was located 10 minutes from the centre of Nuwara Eliya. The bedroom was clean, large and spacious with a twin Jacuzzi and wet room which included a shower. There was a large separate toilet as well. There was a spacious kingsize bed with comfortable bed linen. The hotel staff were excellent and very attentive to our every need. The hotel was spotless and although I have highlighted a number of what I would say are small deficiencies (not including no AC and the lack of a pool!), these could easily and quickly be rectified by the owners.

Overall as stated previously, a little disappointing but not a bad experience by any means, probably more a victim of the high standards that we encountered in the other hotels during our Sri Lankan trip.

This is a great hotel with so much character and yet modern. The staff are really friendly, rooms are very comfortable and warm as they supply a heater and even has a jacuzzi if you have the 'Rose' room. Much preferred this to the Grand hotel where we went for dinner as bigger hotels just don't have the attention to detail and service.

The Hotel, which is rather a boutique hotel with a few rooms only, is well located in a quiet street of Nuwara Eliya and is equipped with beautiful, spacious rooms with a nice design. We spent only one night there end of November and really enjoyed our time there.
The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, always paying attention to details. They also organized a perfect driver for us who took us to the Horton Plains National Park as well as another drive to the train station from which we took the train to Ella.
The hotel is very clean, well equipment and the most luxurious hotel we stayed in during our Sri Lanka trip.
Pricewise is it rather on the high side but the price value is totally fine.
Only disadvantage which we saw from our side: Although there is a small garden, there was no place to sit outside although the weather was very good and also the dinner menu is limited.

Room Tip: Our room was called "Rose" and it was very nice with a big Jacousi etc.

I have been there to this place, i enjoyed my stay in this cottage. Very helpful and polite staff. Being a Indian Vegetarian i requested them to arrange a veg breakfast for me and you cant believe it they gave me DAL curry and nice coconut upma (without additional charges) and cant believe it on the next day they arranged Indian Bread, currly flower curry, dal curry and coconut upma. VERY SPECIAL thanks to shadab.

This is a lovely little boutique hotel! Staff were very friendly while booking online and answered all my questions very quickly regarding transfers from the train station.
Upon arrival we were greeted by very smiley friendly staff and given hot towels, fresh fruit in the room and a pot of tea, welcome after a long journey! The room it self was large and very clean, with a wonderful view. Can not fault this hotel at all the staff really make it! Great place to stay!

Cosy warm rooms. Little but beautiful place. Staff was very friendly, especially the Manager. Food was okay. Walking distance to town, race course and Gregory lake. No in-room water kettle and tea/coffee making stuff.

Very nice, very new place, all the ammenities and services are there, though they chose to go Pepsi instead of Coca Cola :-) It is however still quite pricey for what it offers, but if the money is not so important, you cant go wrong here.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem ok.
