One of the most enjoyable times in Sri Lanka.
Sitting round the fire at night before and after an evening meal which was the best curry we had.
The staff are so friendly and helpful and a pleasure to talk to.
The room was great and the bed comfy and the hot water bottle was an added bonus on the cold nights.
Stayed 2 nights and was sorry to go.
Thank you.

Dear Tiffy,

Thank you for your review. We're extremely pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us at Ferncliff and that Michael and the team made sure you were comfortable. Nuwara Eliya can get quite nippy at night, and we've found that the hot water bottles have proved extremely popular with our guests. Please do come back and stay with us again, and note that we have some special offers available for returning guests and/or their families, that include a gift of Sri Lanka's finest teas.

Best wishes,
Hans

We had a lovely stay in Ferncliff.
- Mikael and his team were dedicated to our well being: tea/coffees, kettle to warm the beds, bfast package for early start...
- the house has a lovely feel to it and his very well kept.
- our room was huge and so was the spotless bathroom.
- the food was fresh and very tasty. Plates are big so you better be hungry.

Dear Tom,

Thank you for your review. Michael runs an extremely tight ship, and his only concern is your well being and comfort. The team has really come together over the past few months, and this is reflected in your review, and more importantly, in the experience that you have with us at Ferncliff. Please do come back and stay with us, and note that we have some special offers for returning guests and their families, that include a gift of Sri Lanka's finest teas.

We arrived after an extended train ride from Kandy (4 hours longer due to land slide) and we were greeted as warmly as our closest relative and friend. Form that point (Michael and his capable and attentive staff) it was a easy and relaxing. The larger homestead with 4 rooms and beautiful and large garden was perfect.

Travelling with our 15month old boy was not a issue for their staff (I think they enjoyed it more than our relaxing time) made it a great stay.

The food was great.

We arrived at Ferncliff after a long train journey from Kandy the weather was quite chilly and raining, but the log fire and the staff at Ferncliff were very welcoming. We had a wonderful dinner of vegetable curry, chicken curry and chicken and fries for our son who is not quite into curry. The portions were quite sufficient, that we were unable to finish it all! Wine was available and was lovely. It was my birthday the day we arrived and I was glad I spent my evening at Ferncliff. Hans was lovely to talk to and very hospitable, the rest of the staff were most attentive. Our room was warm enough we didn't need the heater on all night. Breakfast was delicious and we were only sorry we weren't staying for another night. Thank you Ferncliff. Tom, Gisella and Noah Kimber

We arrived at Ferncliff for a very wet two days in Nuwara Eliya. We were shown a lovely room (the "Black Room", although I understand that they are going to change the room names) which was very cozy and had a wonderful bathroom. Hans (the Manager) showed us around the other rooms and although some of them were bigger we thought it lacked the character of the Black Room. The house has great character and atmosphere and is surrounded by well tended gardens.

As others have noted, when it's wet in Nuwara Eliya everything stays damp, including the towels. This is just the nature of the place and the old house. It was also cold while we were there and the small heater took its time in warming up the room. It was a nice touch that we were provided with hot water bottles for our beds in the evening.

The food was excellent during our stay and the staff were very polite and attentive without being overly obtrusive. We had an excellent wifi connection in our room.

The only issue we had was when we arrived we were told that they didn't have any accommodation facilities for our driver. I made the point that when you're paying rates such as they command we would expect this to be sorted out. To his credit, Hans then put up our driver at no additional cost in a guesthouse within close proximity. I think they would do well to simply include this in their rates as I can't imagine that this issue will not arise again and it seems a small expense in the scheme of their rates.

Dear Shyam,

Thank you for your review. It was a pleasure having you and Lisa stay with us. We're pleased you enjoyed your stay and that everything was to your satisfaction, even during what has proved to be the most inclement Nuwara Eliya weather in over a decade. With regard to driver accommodation, we're in the process of sorting it out so that our guests don't have any hassle in the future. Do come and stay with us again.

We stayed at the Ferncliff during our recent trip to SL, it took us close to a 6 hour drive to get there from Colombo, but boy was it worth it !!!, Nuwaraeliya by itself is one of those rare hill towns in south asia that still remain failry pristene n unexploited by ramphent commercialisation.
Ferncliff is right in the middle of this little town but still ends up feeling like natures little private pocket.
The bunglow is feels like it is from a differnt world, it def has been around for a long time but it is very well maintained n has every aminity a modern day traveller would look for. The rooms are large n spacious, t, Almost every room has its own fire place. The gardens around the property are brilliant.
Overall it is a fantstic location, great property, excellent hospitality, the food is not exceptional but its certainly not bad. Ferncliff can be the ideal get away for everyone, be it family, friends or couples. Certainly worth your time n money.

Room Tip: They have just 4 rooms and each one of them is unique.

Dear Vishnu,

Thank you for your review. We're very pleased that your visit to Nuwara Eliya, despite the long drive, was memorable. Ferncliff, although situated in the heart of Nuwara Eliya town, is set up to be a retreat from the hustle and bustle, and we're glad you enjoyed what we had to offer. The team works hard to ensure that our guests are well cared for and pampered, and as always I have shared the review with the team, so that they know how important it is to maintain our standards, and also improve on certain areas. Once again, thank you for staying with us, and for your recommendation.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Ferncliff perched on one of the highest points of Nuwara Eliya commands a view like no other of 'Little England'. This includes being set against the magnificent backdrop of Mount Pedro (Pidurutalagala), which at 2524 m (8,281 ft) is Sri Lanka's highest point. Just ten minutes walk from the Grand Hotel and the Golf Club, Ferncliff is uniquely placed to be the centre of your Nuwara Eliya universe which includes Horton Plains National Park, Tea Plantations and other locations of interest in the hill country. Deeds for the Ferncliff lands predate the founding of the first Nuwara Eliya settlement by Great White Hunter and Explorer, Sir Samuel Baker in 1846. The bungalow, now a heritage site, had its beginnings in the 1850s and the ghosts of Samuel Baker and his ilk still walk our expansive lawns hunting elephants, deer and wild boar to near extinction in the lush Nuwara Eliya valley. Today, with restorations that have retained its rustic charm, Ferncliff offers comforts that few bungalows in town can aspire to, and our team led by our chef with over 30 years of experience in the hotel trade, will ensure that your time with us will be comfortable and relaxed. Rest assured that although Ferncliff is centrally located, once inside her gates the hustle and bustle of the town is forgotten. Enjoy a game of croquet, a round of boules, or just wander around our extensive grounds which include a young rose garden and very soon, orange and pear orchards. Look no further for what promises to be a truly authentic Nuwara Eliya experience. Kindly note that, accommodation for drivers and guides are not available in the premises. ... more   less
