“Pretty setting for this plantation bungalow”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

Ferncliff has the most comfortable beds and the staff placing a nice hotwater bottle at the foot of the beds before bedtime is very much appreciated. Being so high, Nuwara Elyia gets very cold and guests MUST take warm clothing. The place has a lovely fireplace which is most welcoming to guests arriving late in the afternoons. The staff had great trouble lighting the fire during our visit and then once the fire was lit, they kept leving the front door wide open each time they went out for any reason - sensless really.

The property has been tastefully refurbished with a sucessfull blend of old and new.
Gardens are spacious with wide sweeping lawns.
The breakfast was nicely done and tasty however during our visit the chef was on leave. Due to the cold weather we opted to eat dinner in which was a mistake. There are some good restaurtnast in neighbouring hotels with good food reviews which would be a better idea until the chef returns.

Unfortuantely this property does not offer driver accomodation or meals creating a difficulty for guests.

This is really a bed and breakfast property which is pleasant and comfortable but overpriced.

Set in the beautiful hill country of Sri Lanka, Ferncliff is a beautiful colonial bungalow where the staff welcome you and treat you like family- our every whim was taken care of with a gracious smile. Thank you very much for a great weekend.

Room Tip: The room facing the garden was my favourite.

Despite arriving in a raging monsoon storm, we were welcomed by Hans and his staff, with a much appreciated roaring fire, and a cup of tea. Our room overlooked the beautiful garden which, unfortunateky we did not get to enjoy, It was clean, comfortable, with lovely linens and a delicously comfortable bed, a flat screen tv, which we did not watch, and a beautifully modern bathroom. The batik drapes were beautiful. Despite power outages off and on, we chose to stay in for dinner, for obvious reasons, and were not disappointed. it was delicious, beautifully presented, and the staff are very attentive. The crowning gem of the stay were the two hot water bottles tucked into our bed.
It was nice to learn the history of the house from Hans, who has meticulously renovated the home, maintaining the beautiful teak aspects, yet providng modern comforts, Everyone should stay, at least once, at Ferncliff Bungalow.

Dear Sue,

Thank you so much your review. It was really nice meeting you and Brian and I hope the rest of your stay in Sri Lanka was not as windy or cold.. At Ferncliff, we always try to ensure that our guests have a personal experience as far as possible (including the hot water bottles to keep your toes warm on blustery nights), and also that the history of the place is appreciated by our guests. If you're ever back in Sri Lanka, please do come and stay with us again, the fireplace will be waiting.

Just got back from a wonderful weekend at Ferncliff. It was a delight from the first hour to the last with excellent service, beautifully manicured gardens and the ambiance was spot on. Highly recommend Ferncliff for those who want to get a true insight in to hill country bliss in Sri Lanka. A must visit on your travel agenda!

We have made it a habit of returning to Ferncliff, and every time we do we're amazed at how our experience continues to improve. The house is looking marvelous, as are the gardens, and the weather was perfect for a round of croquet, for which we were joined by an enthusiastic Australian couple. The food too has got better, if that's possible, and we were excited to hear that a new sandwich menu is being developed and that soon Ferncliff will have a BBQ in place, with a magnificent view of Mount Pidurutalagala. This has to be one of our most favourite places to stay now in Sri Lanka, and with the new dining room in place, and an A Grade chef to boot, I don't think we'll ever stay anywhere else in Nuwara Eliya.

Room Tip: We recommend the Blue Room, with its gorgeous 4 poster bed.

We were very disappointed with this hotel. We paid £123 to stay one night and felt that it was a complete rip off. The pictures on the website show nice rooms with big double beds and a bath in the bathroom. Our room was nice and clean but we had two single beds pushed together and no bath.
We arrived after a 9 hour journey so feeling pretty tired. Upon arrival, the house felt cold and empty. The staff were welcoming and did offer us a cup of tea or coffee. When we enquired about dinner we were told that orders end at 5 so we were too late to order. After hearing this I was feeling irritated and pretty angry. We then asked if it was possible to order a beer or wine, the staff informed us that they didn't hold a license to serve alcohol, I asked them if I could order a soft drink and again was told this was not possible. At this point I was so upset and disappointed. When I broke down the staff rallied around and everything seemed to turn around. They offered us alcohol dinner and basically anything we wanted which seemed really bizarre.

The next day the owner Hans spoke with my boyfriend but didn't really show sincerity in his apology. When we were settling the bill he didn't come over and ensure that we were okay. I don't feel that Hans really cared about our stay and seemed to take out our frustrations on the staff when he is to blame. The hotel needs better management and direction from the owner.

Dear Loupea,

Thank you for your review, and at the outset let me apologise for the inadequate welcome you received. As a small boutique bungalow our kitchen does stop operations are 8pm, but when the staff informed me of your displeasure and I received your text, we immediately sorted it out as best we could with getting you food from a restaurant in town. We generally liaise with the guest prior to their arrival but unfortunately on this occasion did not have your contact details.

This said the team did not spare an effort in seeing to your needs as you have noted.

I also apologise if you felt my concern for your wellbeing was not sincere. We are very particular about the experience you have at Ferncliff and that is why I came over immediately to apologise to your boyfriend. I didn't have the opportunity to speak with you as we had come for some emergency repairs that needed my undivided attention. But then again, perhaps I should have paid more attention to you, so sorry about that guys.

Please do return us for a far improved experience whenever you'd like.

With best wishes,

Ferncliff is a nice guesthouse at the end of a small road, and surrounded by a lovely garden.
The service was ok, the room and the house are great!
I think it is a bit overpriced but you will probably enjoy to stay there.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Ferncliff perched on one of the highest points of Nuwara Eliya commands a view like no other of 'Little England'. This includes being set against the magnificent backdrop of Mount Pedro (Pidurutalagala), which at 2524 m (8,281 ft) is Sri Lanka's highest point. Just ten minutes walk from the Grand Hotel and the Golf Club, Ferncliff is uniquely placed to be the centre of your Nuwara Eliya universe which includes Horton Plains National Park, Tea Plantations and other locations of interest in the hill country. Deeds for the Ferncliff lands predate the founding of the first Nuwara Eliya settlement by Great White Hunter and Explorer, Sir Samuel Baker in 1846. The bungalow, now a heritage site, had its beginnings in the 1850s and the ghosts of Samuel Baker and his ilk still walk our expansive lawns hunting elephants, deer and wild boar to near extinction in the lush Nuwara Eliya valley. Today, with restorations that have retained its rustic charm, Ferncliff offers comforts that few bungalows in town can aspire to, and our team led by our chef with over 30 years of experience in the hotel trade, will ensure that your time with us will be comfortable and relaxed. Rest assured that although Ferncliff is centrally located, once inside her gates the hustle and bustle of the town is forgotten. Enjoy a game of croquet, a round of boules, or just wander around our extensive grounds which include a young rose garden and very soon, orange and pear orchards. Look no further for what promises to be a truly authentic Nuwara Eliya experience. Kindly note that, accommodation for drivers and guides are not available in the premises. ... more   less
