King Fern Bungalow
Reviewed February 24, 2013

Staying at the King Fern was one of the highlights of our month-long trip around Sri Lanka. King Fern owner Wasantha and his entire staff are extremely cordial and go out of their way to make you feel at home. There is a nice sitting room, perfect for an afternoon tea. The view from our balcony over the town was gorgeous. We spent two nights in Xanadu, a very spacious two-room suite with one and a half bathrooms. The food was excellent. One night our curry rice dinner included chicken, squash, potato, pineapple, green beans, lentils, eggplant, and papadam.Another night we had whole kingfish plus an assortment of curries. The breakfast coconut roti is also very tasty.
One warning: The King Fern has one unnamed room they use when fully booked. It is very noisy because it is squeezed in between the kitchen and a staff room. It also has some serious plumbing problems which they are working on.
Lal De Silva is an excellent naturalist and birding guide and an excellent guide for Horton Plains and elsewhere. He can be booked through King Fern. Also of note is R. M. Chandrasena, an excellent driver and tour guide who also can be booked through King Fern.

As with the many past reviews, our family had a wonderful stay at King Fern Bungalow and wished we had time for a longer stay.

Indeed, it was a bit out of the way, up a hill but the road was reasonable, and one is rewarded with an excellent view of the town. Not to count a charming bungalow with spacious rooms and balconies as well as gorgeous flowers in its gardens and along the roadside. Whatever limited time I had that evening was just exploring the compact bungalow and snapping as many photos as I could before the light was out.

Dinner was homely and good, though the devilled beef was extremely tough but the sauce was nice. The dining area really added to the homely feel. The owner also gladly made simple breakfast sets (tomato and cheese sandwiches with fruits) even though we were checking out at 5.30am for World’s End.

The night was colder than expected and the fireplace could only last that long so thankfully its blanket was the only one of decent thickness throughout our stay in Sri Lanka. Only gripe was that we needed to turn in early for our early morning check out, but the walls in Xanadu suite were paper thin and from the outside bed we could hear the China guests’ conversations from upstairs. Especially their small boy was talking so loudly, I could practically hear every word loud and clear. Fortunately, they ceased before my patience ran out. I was contemplating between screaming from down below to ask them to lower their volume or to purposely speak at the top of my voice the next morning.

All in all, there is really no reason not to stay at King Fern Bungalow. Price reasonable. Awesome view. Charming building. Cosy room. Homely food. Just pack ear plugs or ear mufflers if you’re intending to sleep early.

the guesthouse is difficult to access but it is really worth. The family is lovely, very nice welcoming (tea and cakes). Our room was spacious and very comfortable with a beautiful view of the city.
Dinner was excellent.
all for a price that seemed affordable.
I RECOMMAND

We stayed one night at King Fern Bungalow and very much enjoyed it. It's a bit out of the way but that means the views overlooking the town are stunning (both day and night).

We stayed in the Xanadu "suite" with two double beds and two bathrooms. They were having problems with the drains in one of the bathrooms which meant we couldn't use it and the smell did permeate the room quite a lot. But they did work hard to try to sort it and couldn't do enough in terms of organising a fire (as it was cold), bringing spare blankets when we asked for them and delivering much needed beers to the room. Everyone was very friendly.

Just a warning that the owner doesn't like to assist with accommodation for drivers!

We would have liked to have stayed longer as the standard of accommodation at King Fern is really above other places in Sri Lanka for the same price.

Room Tip: Xanadu has plenty of space

We stayed two nights at the King Fern Bungalow and really enjoyed it. The family is so nice and Soest everything to make you feel home. On our first night ew were invited to join a small celebration for an Indian couple which was on their Honeymoon. On the second night we celebrated the birthday of an English girl. In Nurelia it can get very cold at night and they lit the fire in the living room for us. The room we had was spacious and clean. The hotel is a bit away from the town but no problem to get there with a Tuk Tuk. There is a shop in Nurelia run by Franciscan nuns. There you can buy delicious homemade jam and chutneys.

We stayed a number of nights with Wasantha and his beautiful wife. Their house is perched overlooking the town and you get wonderful views all day and the lights at night. The rooms are spacious and there are plenty of blankets to cater for the chill in the air. Its a 10 min walk down the hill into town past the local school where the kids will say hi. The food here is simply wonderful. Just let them cater for you. The hotel makes you feel more like family than guest. There is always a laugh and a conversation. Free travel advice is available and Wasantha is always looking out for you. We paid $20 US per night with three people in the room.
These are kind and good people who make travelling enjoyable. I give them the strongest possible recommendation.

If you're staying in Nuwara Eliya then I would recommend King Fern Bungalow. We were picked up from the station free of charge. Wasantha looked after us and arranged for a driver to take us out to the tea plantations and a lovely little walk up to the waterfalls. He also walked us into town and showed us around one evening and introduced my partner to Arrack! (he very genrously bought a bottle and shared this with us one evening in front of a lovely fire in the lounge area). We stayed for 2 nights and both evenings enjoyed some fabulous home cooked food. Breakfast was also great and filling and a Sri Lankan breakfast was provided for my partner after he enquired about it - all at no extra charge. It is a little walk into the town but it doesn't take more than 10 minutes and you can always get a taxi or tuk-tuk back up the hill. We stayed in the Shangi-La room which has a lovely balcony with views over Nuwara Eliya. It is a nice room with a good sized bathroom and plenty of blankets for the cooler nights. I would definately stay here again. Many thanks Wasantha and the Team
