King Fern Bungalow
Reviewed October 20, 2012

My wife and I stayed at King Fern Bagalow for 5 nights on September 2012, it was one of the most wonderful experiences we've ever had. The bungalow is situated in what is undoubtedly among the most scenic locations in Nuwara Eliye.

The views were simply breathtaking. The rooms as the whole house as well are extraordinarily clean. Every room has access to one of the many balconies, where you can relax, have a cup of tea or eat while having a wonderful view over Nuwara Eliya and the surrounding mountains.

Wasantha and his wife Chittra, They'll cook you anything you like, give you detailed instructions about a huge variety of activities around the region, and just basically treat you like one of the family. There is free internet and wi-fi and they will also arrange to pick you up and drop you back to the train station in a car for a very reasonable rate

I highly recommend King Fern Bungalows to anyone.

I stayed 2 nights at King Fern Bungalow and must say i really enjoyed my time there.
The guesthouse is very cozy, very clean and the homemade food was really excellent. The rooms were nice, clean and the mattress was the best I found on my travels through Sri Lanka.
Wasantha, the owner, was always very friendly and helpful, advising us on activities and telling us stories about his Sri Lankan life. They even have a Badminton field in the beautiful garden, were I played with the owner.
The house is located on top of a hill and the view is really spectacular.
Next time I will come to Nuwara Eliya I will definitely stay there again !

The facts: Nuwara Eliya might be cold and damp to those not used to the climate, but there was nothing wrong with the rooms. The owners are lovely, helpful people. This is a family run guesthouse not a luxury hotel but food is very good. Would recommend. The access road is unmade and the property is a 10 minute walk into town but we found the tuk-tuk ride to be part of the experience. The owners, Wasantha and Chitra are great fun and will organise trips, drivers etc. I can recommend a very friendly non-pushy driver they linked us up with called Chandrasena. A great budget option if in Nuwara Eliya

We spent two nights here with Wasantha (the owner) and it was our two best nights so far in Sri Lanka. We contacted the owner in advance, he explained trains etc and offered to pick us up from the station. That was just the start...he arranged all our visits in the area for a great price and our tour guide even took us on to our next destination.

We were welcomed into his guesthouse as if it were his home. The rooms are beautiful, very rustic and the whole house is in great condition. Situated at the top of the hill you get an amazing view of the town below. As for the food, i can't stress enough how much you have to eat here. The restaurants in town (the few that exist) are classic tourist traps but Wasantha's kitchen is incredible. He has two boys who do all the cooking and if authentic sri lankan food is what you're after, you have to eat here. The prices are really cheap and you will eat until you are full.

Our final night was such fun, we sat having a few drinks with Wasantha and one of his boys and he taught us a Sri Lankan Board Game.

We will definitely be coming back to King Fern Bungalows.

It's not surprising that king fern bungalows has been awarded a certificate of excellence for the year 2012, it is simply fantastic!
The place is a big nicely furnished house on different levels situated on a hilly road just outside the city and the room we had was lovely! it offered two different types of pillows, a thick confortable mattress and an extra blanket to keep us warm during the cold nights!
We stayed on a half board accommodation and we must say they are very good cooks! At king fern bungalows we had the chance to try local specialties out of the traditional rice and curry, which we like a lot but, since we had been eating it for days, we asked for something different and they offered us a menu full of new delights, such as fish and avocado, chicken biryani and string hoppers with fish curry. All yummy! For breakfast they made us try the typical cocunut rotti served with pinapple jam and butter and palm tree syrup, which was simply delicious, fresh fruit and a cup of tea. What a great way to wake up and start the day!
Besides all this, what really makes the place excellent is the owner and his family, they are so nice, kind and helpful! The owner is able to give you good advise on what to do and where to go, can tell you stories about the country and is willing to help! he devotes himself completely to the guests and this makes you really feel at home! the first evening he lighted up the fireplace and played a typical sri lankan table game with us, we had so much fun!!
If you happen to be in Nuwara Eliya, this is the place to stay! We highly recommend it!

Firstly lets start by saying that this is a guest house and not a hotel. If you are looking for a place to stay where points are given for views, hospitality, kindness and fun then this place would get 10 out of 10. Our room was actually two rooms in one. There were two rooms both with a double bed. The room we used was comfortable but as we are both tall we prefer a kingsize or two single beds zipped together. The bathroom was small and I have to say bordering on unacceptable. The walls need painting, and some basic maintenance on things like screwing shelves back to the walls and the shower head holder are desperately needed but if truth be told, it wants gutting and starting again.

We ate traditional rice and curry for dinner and asked if we could watch. The young man who cooked was excellent and over the 13 days we spent in Sri Lanka the meal we ate that night was the best. Fresh ingredients, cooked in front of your eyes by a quiet, unassuming young man - delicious!

We played Badminton for an hour or so before dinner in the garden - fantastic fun and relatively competitive with a sore eye, grazed knee, pulled back and sprained right arm making up the injury list by dinner time...just for the record book I must confirm that those Sri Lankan boys took one hell of a beating...

Breakfast was again excellent. It must be the cool air that makes the fruit taste so good. A great selection of foods, breads, juices prepared in the kitchen so you can watch from the dinning area.

In summary, the whole team at King Fern Bungalow are excellent. Great hospitality, wonderful food and sitting all night talking over a few beers after playing badminton was one of the highlights of our holiday.

There's definitely room to put the prices up a little which would free up some funds in order to refurbish the place which in turn would increase occupancy.

Glad we stayed and you will be too

PS - Take a fleece, it actually gets cold on an evening - bliss!!!

If you're the traveller who doesn't mind basic amenities and who values travel experience more than frills, then this is the place you're looking for!

King Fern Bungalow is located at the end of the road on top of the mountain. This is a home-turned-guesthouse. Why I loved this place:
1) Room with a spectacular view of the mountains. They gave me 'Eagles Nest', the highest room with its own balcony. I loved waking up early to catch the sunrise, while enjoying a cup of hot tea. However, this room has a shared bathroom which I didn't mind because I only had to share it with the owners.
2) Hospitality of Wasantha and Chitra. They are pros at being hosts -- always smiling and responded to every guest's needs. Chitra's home-cooked meals are so delicious! The dahl and the coconut roti are a must-try!
3) Location. Since this is a bit high up the hill, it required around 15mins walking to get to town. There is a short cut right by King Fern. I loved walking and taking pictures along the way. If you don't like to walk, you can always ask the owners to get a tuktuk for you.

I now understand why this place has a 5-star rating on Tripadvisor. If you want to experience real Sri Lankan hospitality, you will love this place!

Room Tip: Request for a room with a view to enjoy the serene sight in the morning. It may be difficult to go...
