We stayed 2 nights in Nishan cottage and really enjoyed it. He gave us a little concert in the night, as it was my birthday the next day. We had niche chats and where asked to assist him with some music video clips. We had fun! The food was good and the fire place made it really cosy in the evening. The breakfast creatively arranged and the staff adorable. His driver Hichchi was a great guy and driver who brought us back to the coast when we decided to escape from the rain.

We stopped briefly in Nuwara Eliya and stayed at King Fern Cottage. We had a big, clean room with a good bed and mattress. The location is good and the public areas seemed attractive in the evening. We left early at 6 am and had a breakfast box so cannot really comment on the food.

Lal was very friendly, just ask him for some hints about the activities around nuwara. The amtospehre is chilly, you can sit in front of a little fire (oven).
A driver is picking you up for free if you are calling ahead. Paid 4000 rupies four a room for 3-4 people.

A very good address to relax, rest and have some fun.
You will never forget the warm welcome of King Nishan, Lal and all the staff.
In the middle of Nature, Far away from everything, very nice wooden cottage...
Enjoy it

Myself and a friend backpacked around Sri Lanka (early January 2013), and when we ended up in Nuwara Eliya, we had no clue where to stay.

We took a tuk tuk to King Fern since we saw that it had a good rating on tripadvisor, and it's well reviewed for good reason. Upon arrival they were fully booked, so we decided to have some tea to fight off the cold weather, which happened to be straight from the Mackwoods Tea Estate nearby and is fantastically delicious. We met one of the staff, Hichi, who was incredibly friendly and actually gave us a box of the tea they served us, free of charge. Not only that, but the tea they served us turned out to be on the house.

Afterwards, they apologized that they couldn't get us a room, but had one of their staff drive us in a van to look for a decent, cheap place to stay around town, also without charge! Needless to say, we couldn't wait until we could actually stay at the place.

If I told you about all the hospitality that everyone working here gave us, you would be reading this review for pages. That, and I'd be ruining a bit of the surprise for you. I will say though that the owner, Nishan, cares so much for his visitors, that he will give up his OWN room that he sleeps in if someone really needs a place to stay, like he did for us and someone else as we were leaving. He is one of the best men I have ever met.

Aside from the friendliness and hospitality of the staff, the place itself is gorgeously designed (by the owner himself) and the rooms are cozy and rustic. The dining room, where we had several delicious meals, (try the soups, they're great!) is a gorgeous glass-paned, wooden area that is kept spotless. We spent several late nights chatting with other guests near the fireplace, roasting marshmallows and sharing beers.

Honestly, we stayed in Nuwara Eliya and the only "thing we did" was visit a tea plantation. However, we loved this place so much that we ended up staying for 3 days at King Fern and met some of the most lovely people (staff and other guests alike) that it made the whole trip there worth it.

If you're a hoitey toitey person who expects pristine, hotel/spa-like places to stay and keeps to yourself, I wouldn't stay here. But if you're an average traveler looking for an extremely cheap but lovely place to stay where the people are amazing, by all means, do whatever you can to come here. You won't regret it.

This hotel has a very cozy feeling to it. There are only 8 rooms here and the common area is built like a tree house. There is a small chimney which is light every evening which provides nice warmth during the chilly winters. The food served here is worth its money and has amazing taste.
The staff are extremely friendly and easy going.

We stayed at king fern for 3 nights and had a very enjoyable stay. It is very good value but what makes this place are the brilliant staff. Lal and his team really looked after us from arranging bikes to cooking and a fantastic driver Sanjaya who took us to Kitulgala. Definitely worth a stay! Many thanks! Zoe and Felix
