“Great retreat right on the river”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 3, 2014

We booked with Rafter's Retreat and were quite glad we did. The cabin we had overlooked the river, and we fell asleep to the sound of the water rushing by. The staff of the retreat take care of their guests. The only reason I didn't give this resort 5 stars was because of the transportation used to get us from Columbo airport to Kitulgala. Our family of four SQUEEZED into the vehicle. Made for a very uncomfortable transport up the mountain. But, once there, everything was relaxing and beautiful. We arranged for a white water trip for our family, knowing that we might not be able to do it due to the water levels. We ended up having to wait an hour or so, but did the trip, which was great.

We stayed in an eco lodge, which had 2 double/queen beds and one twin bed. The bathroom was down below, and is "outside," which is interesting if you have to use the facilities at night. Mosquito nets are provided, and are definitely needed. We traveled with 2 adults, and 2 boys ages 12 and 16. We all had a great time.

During the day, I highly recommend sitting in the water right in front of the retreat. It's refreshing and wonderful after a day of travel. The food is fantastic and plentiful too. If you are looking for super luxurious, this is not the place to go. But, if you are looking for a nice, family-run business, with a staff who is friendly and a retreat in a natural setting, this is the place!

We stayed 2 nights in this nice eco lodge. The setting is really beautiful next to a river. You can swim here and have a natural jacuzzi.
The cabins are basic, but that is the point of this lodge. The bed was really comfortable and had this super nice view, very nice to wake up in the morning. The bathroom has cold water, but we used the river to take a bath, just like the locals do.
The owner and the girl which arranges a lot are very friendly and try to make you as much as comfortable as they can. The owner made this place by himself which he did a good job I think!

Beside rafting you can do mountain biking and jumping and sliding which is great fun.

The price can be a bit steep, comparing to other accommodation around Sri Lanka. But in the low season there is room for negotiation.
We really enjoyed the food!

We had a great stay. Amazing place, closest to nature you can get, in the middle of the jungle right at the edge of a river. Very friendly staff and delicious Sri Lankan food. But if you need absolute silence to sleep then do not go there.

This was my third whitewater rafting with Channa (Owner of the hotel) and the team. They always give value for money service. Our guide was so keen on the safety and the excitement of the gusts. Lunch was Sri Lankan authentic food. You can relax at the chalet at the riverbank. They go extra mile when compare to the other places which offers whitewater rafting.

It was a new experience. the food was superb and the staff also good. we went in the morning and went for rafting at about 11 and it was about 1 and a half hour then we had a bath in the river and had superb sri lankan lunch. then the tea and the pan cake in the evening. It was simply superb. just need some improvement in the atmosphere.

We did not stay at Rafter's Retreat, but booked all our Kitulgala adventures with them. They have a collection of rafts and professionals who ensured a wonderful experience for us. First thing we booked with them was the white water rafting where we were joined by two other guests from Germany and all four of us had the time of our life. Yes I took a splash in the water on rapid number 5 and was promptly rescued! :)
Next we booked the stream sliding and confidence jumps. This involved a nice trek into the jungles to a spot with a series of waterfalls. This is a lovely place to visit. We went barefoot as we were prepared for the water activities, but that is not advisable and we ended up playing host to couple of leeches on our legs. The activity itself was amazing. You get to slide down the mountain streams and then there are two jumps from 12 feet and 20 feet into the water pool below. This is really something to be experienced.
The last activity we booked was a visit to the Beni Lena caves. This involved a jeep drive for a few miles and then a climb up the steps to the cave. Unfortunately when we reached the cave the workers switched off the lights. We learnt there is some excavation going on in the cave. A bit disappointing due to the weather and the late time of day, but worth going for just a view of the waterfalls there anyway.
