“Excellent Fun!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 3, 2013

Our family of 4 (with 2 teenagers of 13 and 16) are very keen on white water rafting and we had specially planned our Sri Lankan holiday to include this activity. We could only fit it into our tour between Kandy and Ella and so travelled from Kandy to Kitulgala (about 1.5 hrs) in the morning. As the journey from Kitulgala to Ella was going to take at least 6 hrs (1 hr longer than anticipated due to some road improvement at the time which meant that a different/longer route had to be taken), we only had time to do the rafting and not the other activities on offer.
The rafting was great fun and the 2 guides were very friendly. We were pleased that one of the guides was in a separate safetly canoe.
Rafting on the river (it had 7 rapids of Grade 2 or 3) itself only lasted about 55 minutes. We enjoyed it very much but certainly wished that it could have been longer!! It may be just us though that thought that it was a bit short as we've rafted on various rivers in other countries. We appreciate that it is the river itself that dictates how long the rafting can be. If we had more time, we would certainly have done some of the other activities as well to make the visit more worthwhile.
The lunch they provided after the rafting was good and they were able to cater to my son's food allergies.
If we're in Sri Lanka again, we would definitely make more time to do more of the activities that Borderlands has on offer.

We were told about Borderlands by some friends whose child had just returned from there. We spent two night there and did all the activities, my energetic boys (10 & 7) liked the canyoning and canoeing best as rafting is only for 11+but try to do as much as you can.

The kit was first class and we received proper safety briefings and the guides were highly competent. The Canadian owner is around a lot to keep the team on their toes and is a great guy. Some of the other outfits on the river did there safety briefs in a couple of minutes and the kit looked a bit shabby, but not at Borderlands.

We were given one of the "new style" huts which sleeps 3 and is high over the river and open on one side which my boys loved. The food was great, big bowls of pasta and curry for lunch and dinner which everyone devoured. They put on movies at night for the kids and its a great place to chill out and get away from civilization.

Room Tip: Get a new river hut rather than a tent- unless you sleepwalk or suffer from vertigo!

We stayed at another lodge but found out the only place to hire kayaks in Kitugala was at Borderlands. Having used the other rafting places I can honestly say Borderlands were the most professional and well equipped in terms of rafting and kayaking. They put a premium on safety which was comforting. This is not say the other providers were not capable but the team from Borderlands spoke good english and had an edge. For experienced kayakers, the river is a great grade 2+ - 3+ run depending on the water level. As a kayaker I took my son down, who is learning how to roll and so he rafted the top section and kayaked the grade 2 on the lower stretches. If we had more time in Sri Lanka I would have gone down a couple more times. The guides and staff were great and knew their stuff. Pradeep from Nepal was awesome. Thx !

My husband & I stayed two nights and could have easily stayed longer. The accommodation overlooking the river is wonderful- it was so peaceful going to sleep at night listening to the current. The staff were welcoming, friendly and relaxed - and when it comes to participating in the activities like rafting, their safety instruction & obvious experience really shone through. The highlight of our stay for me was jumping off a waterfall in the pouring rain! ( and maybe screaming when rafting!). Highly recommend to anyone looking for something adventurous!

We mainly went to Sri Lanka because of the fantastic beaches, only to find out that the best place is on the inland along the river. Borderlands offer more than just a fantastic place to chill, they provide you with great staff that takes you on both thrilling and scenic trips along the river. What is great about it the fabulous staff. They are both flexibile and patient. Their mission is for the tourist to have the best holiday imaginable. They make you feel at home and on top of all these perks they cook the best Sri Lankian food!! We can't wait to visit you guys again!! A special thanks to Diana, you are a great trip leader! Thanks for making our vacation special :)

I came to Borderlands during my trip to Sri Lanka in July 2012. Altogether, we were a group of six and had a great time here. We chose Borderlands because we wanted to have some adventure on the river without having to worry about safety issues. And it was totally worth it. To be honest, for Sri Lankan measures, it is not a cheap fun, but I believe the money is spent well here. The rafting and canyoning instructors made a very good and well-trained impression, not to mention that we had heaps of fun there. Thanks to Yohan and Stephane for that! Gwen manages the reservations very efficiently, it was pleasant booking with her. And Wade, the owner of the place, is a really entertaining host and a great musician too. We enjoyed the private concert he gave us in the evening.
The accomodation itself is very nice, little sheds overlooking the river. You sleep in tents, which gives it a bit of an "expedition-touch". Wonderful. The central point of gathering is the long house, with a nice and cosy chill-out area. Especially beautiful in the evenings. I was a bit disappointed of the lunch, I think they could have done better than just pasta with tomato sauce. After being spoilt with wonderful food throughout our trip, the food here didn't meet the standard of the rest of the place. Also, the payment of the bill in cash (!) at checkout was quite a challenge for us. Dealing with such amounts, I think one can expect to be able to pay by credit card. However, these are the only two negative points I can mention here, I can totally recommend Borderlands for experiencing the adventurous part of Sri Lanka. In Wade's team, you can feel safe and in good hands and just enjoy the adventure!
