Absolute must-do for activity seekers. Stunning scenery, friendly staff, nice food and great activities. Our highlight had to be abseiling down a waterfall, but falling out of the whitewater raft was also a lot of fun! Evenings were spent relaxing in the long house, reading, playing cards etc or on the balcony of our tent with a beautiful view. The camping is luxury (but is still camping so not recommended for the non-outdoorsy) but we absolutely loved it. Thank you to the whole team- from activity leaders to kitchen staff, and to the tireless Gwen of course, all of whom were very friendly and entirely professional. Fantastic experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a river-view tent if available

I went to Borderlands Lanka with my school and it was one of the best adventures i've had in my life. We went Abseiling, Canyoning, and Rafting. They had an amazing bar with great snacks. Yohan, Nermal, Kiki, Ken and the rest of the staff, really brightened the experience. A fun, but annoying experience was the amount of leeches.

Saw this place when we rafted by with another company. I noticed they had kayaks so I got determined to check it out! When we got there we were well taken care of and after five minutes talking I had my selfe a private kayak guide. The guide "Kiki" was not only a grate kayaker but also a grate teacher. I felt safe and inspired the whole trip. I had not done so big rapids before but he talked me trough the lines and then showed me how to do it. Grate experience!!!
We did not stay there I only did the kayaking so I don't know how the rooms are more than that they looked nice from distance B-) the common area was really nice! Cool bar! Hope to come back and stay there.

The reviews said it all: Full fun, excellent, great team and safety!
Simply put, father with 3 kids (6,8,10) traveling alone....
We all had a great time, I had time to relax and the team was absolutely great with the kids.
My special thanks to Mahesh, Johann and Ken and of course you, Gwen.
The activities are suited for everyone from 6 to above...ranging from canyoning (really cool), rafting, kayak etc....

First thing's first, this is a rustic camping experience not a 5 star hotel. If you go expecting a clinically pristine resort you will be disappointed! However, If you go expecting to have a unique experience in the beautiful forests, rivers and waterfalls of Kitulgala combined with 5 star customer service, food and safety then you will be on to a winner!!

Our first contact was with Gwen who answered our email very promptly, politely and professionally with a full itinerary and break down of cost. She was also available on the phone and sent us lots of texts with directions. The refreshing thing about Borderlands is that the price is the price. You won't get sneaky charges which many Sri Lankan companies like to do. Admittedly, it's not the cheapest out there but if you want quality, you have to be prepared to part with a bit extra cash. We were not disappointed and when you factor in food, activities and accommodation it's not a bad deal!

The accommodation is basically a tent under a banana leaf canopy on a stilted platform - see the pictures. I kept this secret from my travel buddy Emma... She was surprised at first but loved it! Sleeping next to the river on the edge of the forest is so relaxing! We even got treated to a glow bug display on one night... Better than any telly!
All the tents have beds, electricity and lighting but that's as luxurious as you get and as luxurious as you need (if you want to spend your day in a hotel room with AC and television then this is not the experience for you!). The shower/toilet blocks are separate to the accommodation and split into male and female. They are very clean and they have installed heated showers too!
The communal area is called the longhouse and this is such a wonderfully thought out idea. It's the place to sit and chill out on the many scattered cushions and update your social media with pictures of your exciting day. Service is available whenever you need it and they serve ICE COLD beer (a rarity in Sri Lanka!)
Now onto the food... This was the absolute highlight of our stay and arguably the best food of our 2 month trip. Borderlands would do a roaring trade as a restaurant alone! We had as much as we could eat of original Sri Lankan recipes for breakfast, lunch and dinner! There were a few surprises thrown in there like jelly and angel delight for dessert! We had no preference to the food we ate and just enjoyed what we were given but Gwen was very thorough when confirming our booking for any preferences or dietary needs that we may have had. Did I mention how good the food was???

The activities we chose were white water rafting and canyoning. We set off fairly early in the morning but did not feel rushed to finish breakfast. Everything was very much at our pace. The guides in the raft were great fun and we felt very safe with modern equipment and 2 well trained guys in kayaks following the raft down the river. It's worth pointing out we saw a few other operators on the river who did not have the same emphasis on safety so we felt reassured that we had made the right choice. The rafting was so much fun!
The experience was split in half by a canyoning walk. We had a walk up into the hills where we met a river with lots of waterfalls and rocks heading back down to where we left the raft. Again, we had so much fun jumping into the river and using the natural water slides! At no time did we feel unsafe, the guides know the river very well and will give you plenty of encouragement.
The last bit of the trip involved a couple more rapids and a very relaxing float down the river. We had the option to jump in and just take in the beautiful scenery and let the river take us home.

Overall we had such a memorable time at Borderlands. All the staff there are genuinely lovely from the top boss to the Uncle who does odd jobs about the place. They are all happy to help and you really feel they want to make your stay there safe and enjoyable.
We stayed for 3 nights at a particularly quiet time and got to do extra activities in the afternoon of our activity day and even though it's not part of the overall service and we didn't expect it we got a lift back into Colombo from the guys who were heading back (they also threw in an extra lunch too).
So to Gwen, Wayne, Wade, Ken, Mahesh, Subadu, Pradip, KiKi (and everyone we missed) thank you so much! If we are ever in town again we will see you again! All the best! Highly recommended.

Dear MisterSamwise.

Wow! Thank you for your incredibly detailed and kind review. I wish our response could match that level of enthusiasm n your post, but sadly I don't think we'll be able to match! I think you've got everything covered. We know we're not the cheapest option out there, but hope that the money is certainly worth it--especially if it, on the rare chance, gives you the option to have a complimentary car ride back to Colombo. Well, the only thing I can see is that we hope to see you again sometime in the future, and perhaps get an even more glowing review. Thanks so much,

Best Wishes,
The Borderlands Team

Dear Sudantha,

Thank you for writing your great review about our peer development programs. We don't get as many reviews for them as we do our tourism, so we're doubly grateful you wrote yours. We'll pass the kind words on to Kiki for all his hard work. Thanks again.

I spent two night ast Borderlands at the begining of our trip around Sri Lanka and it was my favourite place out of many amazing places. All the staff were super friendly and helpful. We did rafting, canyoning and abseiling and everything was very professional and safe. The food was delicious and plentiful. The tent tree-house accomodation was good fun and made a big impact on arrival. I can't rave enough about it. I loved Borderlands!

Dear Alice B,

Thank you for writing your great review. We really appreciate your glowing words about our camp, staff and activities. Our tents many not actually be "tree houses" but the way they overlook the river, they can certainly give off that feel! Thanks again! Hope to you again.
