La Maison Nil Manel
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed January 6, 2013

After a couple of days in the North and the Center of this beautiful country, we arrived at "La Maison Nil Manel", certainly one of the most beautiful places in Sri Lanka. You are not just in a hotel; but you are welcoming by Monique and Chanaka in their luxury colonial house with a very nice swimming pool and a fabulous tropical garden. After a short walk through the property and the reception of the well sized and very nice furnished rooms, you may go to that amazing beach just a few meters from the hotel, or stay in that marvelous place and take benefit of the serenity which transforms you immediately into a new person! Everything is so beautiful and the staff is so kind. If you have the chance to have diner in Nil Manel, you will be surprised by the excellence of the fine food prepared by Chanaka. You can taste local vegetables and very fresh sea-food. The quality of the dishes is extraordinary compared to other places. Don’t miss, under any circumstances, the massages organized by Monique with one of the most famous masseurs, Mr. Rathna. Several excursions are proposed and you absolutely have to visit the lagoon with its mangrove area and the Mirala Duwa Island with pineapples, cinnamon and other plantations. This excursion is mandatory. Monique and Chanaka have created this beautiful place away from the huge tourist centers. If you are looking to find something special and authentic, you are at the right place in Nil Manel. You cannot leave Sri Lanka without a stay in La Maison Nil Manel. You really have to discover this unique place, which is highly recommended. Many thanks to Monique, Chanaka and all the staff for their very warm welcome. We definitively will come back.

We spend 3 days at Nil Manel. The house and gardens are splendid. We loved the swimming pool just in front of the bedrooms. We stayed for dinner every evening. A different menu was available every day, in addition to the regular 'a la carte'. If you are there during the lobster season, ask for one. Take some time to look at all the very nice statues, and there are many!
You are very close to the see and the fishermans.
In a nutshell, this place is just great.

This is a beautiful arty hotel packed with style and layers of detail in the house, garden and rooms. Monique and Chanaka made us feel so very welcome. Nothing was too much for them. Everyone working at Nil Manel were happy and attentive and made it a great place to relax in. We will remember for some time the flowers on our bed each morning and evening and the exotic smell of the burning cinnamon oil.

Carol and I stayed here for 3 nights after a week's tour of the cultural triangle and a friend's wedding celebrations in Colombo and Ahungalla, and this was the perfect place to reflect on the great things Sri Lanka offers.

Monique and Chanaka deserve every success.

We stayed at La Maison Nil Manel ( www.nilmanel.com ) for just over 4 days at the beginning of January 2012; it was the perfect relaxing end to our touring holiday in Sri Lanka.
Monique and Chanaka, out of the devastation of the Tsunami, have created a beautiful boutique villa and grounds with an eclectic mix of old and new. The villa is named after the Sri Lankan national flower Nil Manel ( a type of water lily)They were very welcoming hosts and with their staff provided us with an informal environment which made us feel right at home. Both Monique and Chanaka are both fluent English speakers and we had many interesting conversations with them during our stay.
We stayed in the May Mara deluxe room on the first floor; this has a large west facing balcony from which we enjoyed many a Lion beer at sunset. The room had a large ensuite bathroom and all you needed for a relaxing time.
The swimming pool is large for the size of the villa and never felt crowded. The space around the pool is limited but there were enough sun loungers for all the people staying at the villa.
The restaurant was for guests only, ensuring we received a personal service with the food cooked to our liking. Each day the menu and our requirements were discussed and then cooked by Chanaka and his team; and Monique created some great desserts. It was a good blend of Sri Lankan and international fare, the local seafood was delicious.
They have an experienced masseur who is at Nil Manel every Friday. Having climbed Adams Peak a few days earlier Mr Rathna’s massage was a welcome relief and all my aches and pains disappeared. It was well worth booking an appointment with him.
Nil Manel is located in Ahungalla, we found this to be a small quiet coastal village with roadside stores, plenty of tuk tuks and a long sandy beach. It is well placed on the west coast to visit numerous attractions including Galle.
