“Splendid hotel in every way”
Reviewed January 26, 2014 via mobile

We have just returned from a most wonderful stay at this hotel, and can recommend it in every way. The situation, right on a beautiful beach, and the architecture blends perfectly in to the environment and makes the most of the cooling breezes. It is conveniently placed for visits to near by Galle, and we especially enjoyed cycling through the lanes of local villages. What makes this hotel stand out, though , is the staff. Although we only stayed for a week, they made us feel like members of the family, and we were totally at home there. Every member of staff went out of their way to anticipate and meet our needs, and it is almost impossible to single out particular individuals who made our stay so special. KK, the restaurant manager and his assistant Anushka, ensured we had all we needed for every meal, and even arranged a delicious picnic for us to enjoy on our trip home. The food was absolutely delicious, catering for every taste, and Praveen Fernando found us a shady table outside for breakfast every morning. Mr de Silva, the general manager, was always on hand, and we felt cosseted and cherished throughout our stay. The swimming pools are amazing, and the shady garden a delight to relax in. The rooms are comfortable and spotless , again, with wonderful service. The local people of Sri Lanka , offering such warm and genuine a hospitality, are what makes a visit to this country so very special, this can be experienced in full at the Heritance Hotel. We had the most wonderful holiday , and will be recommending it to family and friends. We can't wait to return. Many thanks to all the members of staff who contributed to our delightful stay.

The service was exceptional in this hotel - hence I am starting off by mentioning this - everyone was so friendly and went out of their way to be welcoming. In fact this is the main reason we would return to this hotel. The rooms were fine - we stayed on the 3rd floor and they gave us a nice basket of fruit, biscuits and peanuts to welcome us. I thought dinner was average but nevertheless enjoyable; breakfast was lovely. It is more of a family hotel/ older couple hotel and I think the entertainment is geared to that audience. For the price this hotel is amazing.

Another thing worth mentioning is this hotel seems to do a lot for its local community which I think is fantastic - there was an ad for a charity it supports in the lift. I also did wonder if the hotel endorsed the beach sellers - some people probably find the beach sellers a bit annoying but actually if you just tell them you are not interested they leave you alone. These people are just making a living and if I can help them by buying from them I am happy to do so.

After much debate of where to celebrate our 1st anniversary...my husband and I finally decided on Heritance Ahungalla and spent 3 nights there last December. In retrospect we both agree that we made the best decision! From the time we arrived we were treated to very personalized service that we were quite frankly not expecting from a hotel this size. In lieu of our anniversary we were upgraded to a luxury room - which was very spacious and had a fantastic bathroom - fully equipped with TWO wash basins, a bath tub and a fabulous rain shower!! This was a super start to our anniversary celebrations! On the actual day when we came down for dinner we were thrilled to find a specially decorated table for us and we were treated to a cake for dessert as well. This gesture from the Heritance team made us feel very special and truly added to make our day even better! We were on half board so we had both the beakfast buffet and the dinner buffet on all 3 nights - food was delicious but what is truly worth mentioning is the fantastic service. I really must commend Mr. Kumara Karunaratne ( KK) for his excellent service (we both truly feel he is a role-model to more junior staff members) - he goes down to minute details and goes the extra mile to make guests feel like they are the most important people there. The F & B team too must be commended for their great personalized service despite the high occupancy at the hotel. We were further treated to a beautifully decorated bed every time we got back to our room in the night. So I must not forget to thank the housekeeping team for their thoughtful gesture!! All in all..we had an unforgettable weekend away - where we basked in the luxury of the amenities the hotel had to offer us (the residence pool and the spa were great!)....and most of all were treated to 5 star service which I feel is what this hotel's true USP is!!

Room Tip: The luxury rooms are great. The bathroom has a bath tub as well as a really good rain shower.

Situated on the beach most rooms have a great view of the beach. The pools are beautiful, the Restaurants and bars are lovely and our room was magnificent. Comfy beds and pillows a wet room in the bathroom plus small lounge area and work desk. Not enough lounges around the pool as most guests (Europeans)claim them in the morning and keep them when they go off to breakfast and lunch, not very considerate of other people. There are not any shops etc near the hotel and the hotel shop has very limited stock. Hawkers will try and sell you sarongs etc from the beach we looked at a table cloth and they wanted 8,000 rupier we ended up getting it for 3,000 so be strong and walk away and if their sales are down they will come looking for you - they cannot walk on the hotel grass so they will stand on the beach and call to you. If you walk the beach the hawkers will be at you - boat trip, restaurant, jewelry shop, sarongs, massage etc be careful a guy named Freddie would not leave us alone.

Room Tip: Ask for level 2 or 3 beach facing to get best views

We spent 7 nights at the Heritance in Ahungalla, and enjoyed the beach and the pools of the hotel.
The hotel is very nice and the hotel facilities were great: 2 large pools and lots of sunchairs and umbrellas for relaxation in the shadow. Our 2 kids spent most of their week in the pool, but the beach and ocean is amazing. There were a red flag on the beach throughout our stay, which meant you should not go into the water, but unfortunately this is only for 'insurance' reasons for the hotel. The waves were big in the afternoon, but the wind and surge were not very dangerous. Small children should probably stay out though.
Ahungalla village did not provide any restaurant nor sight of interest, which was a small disappointement. But since the food and buffet at the hotel was outstanding, we did not suffer.
We went on day trips to Kosgoda for Sea Turtle Hatchery, which was interesting. I suspect we were tricked by the tuktuk driver to go to a place which was built up only for tourists. Run down and dodgy, but kids loved it because we could hold sea turtle babies in our hands. I would chekc up on these hatcheries, there are apparantly 2-3 to choose from.
We also took a boat trip at the Madu river. Basic but still very nice. Recommended, and our local boat driver Dinesh was outstanding.

We also used the Spa at the hotel for a Balinese massage, highly recommended.

Highly recommend this hotel. The food was excellent. The staff was very friendly. Big pool.

It's not too far from Colombo. If taking the highway, take the ambalangoda exit though. The aluthgama exit road is still being done up.

This hotel in the past was one of the best in Sri Lanka, but now it is a well worn ,out of date of the modern class of hotel.
Since the name change from the Triton years ago, it's been on a downward spiral. We used to visit every year until the Tsunami occurred,we were there then as well.
We revisited it two years later when it re-opened
Lots of the old staff that knew what they were doing have gone, replaced by new , not sure of what they're doing.
It is now full board, all inclusive has disappeared along with the regular visitors to the hotel. This is now made up by having day visits of Sri Lankan people.
This I accept as you need custom.
But when I've paid good money to stay in a 5* hotel, and I have to put up with locals using the swimming pool, fully dressed in all the sweaty clothes that they have travelled in, then walking round dripping wet, playing water polo in the pool bawling their heads off, not giving a hoot for the residents, and with kids running wild, then that is the time to take a good look at the hotel and wonder if it is a good place to stay after all.
The hotel itself is in need of a good maintenance team, not just the paint brush brigade, covering over cracks.
On the beach, you are now pestered from morning to night by the beach sellers, who previously weren't allowed to come close to holidaymakers, but now the exclusion zone is minimal.
