Stayed in this hotel with wife and kid.

This hotel has great architecture and nice pool. Food was excellent and can go again for food.

However room was very small and compact for a class of this hotel and other hotels have larger rooms and better bathrooms.

Service could have been better. Empty plates from others rooms were left outside the room and it was not very pleasant. Was planning to stay an extra day, however did not because of the room.

Expected more from the Heritance chain, especially compared to Kandalama

A very nice, fancy resort with all you need. Staff was great, room large and modern, breakfest and buffet dinner awsome, pools fantastic. THe beach is great, though it's not privet so vendors are there all thr time. no bath tub in my room but the shoer was huge and great.Wi fi is free for a week even though it's says otherwise when you first log in - the pasword will be given free at the reception.

The best thing about the resort is its brilliant architecture. It is very open, spacious and airy. If you see the pool from the lobby, it looks as if it has merged with the sea. Every room has a beautiful view of the pool and the beach. Food is a problem if you are a vegetarian. The staffs are courteous and had arranged a sightseeing trip to the turtle hatchery and mangrove boating for us. If you are travelling to Srilanka, a 2 days stay at Heritance Ahungalla is a must!!

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you very much for selecting Heritance Ahungalla as your holiday destination. We are very happy that you have enjoyed the architectural beauty of our hotel which was created at the hands of the late architectural genius, Gefforey Bawa. We noted with concern that you have mentioned about vegetarian cuisine. We will ensure that we look after the needs of our vegetarian customers when they come. We trust that you will come back to Sri Lanka and to our Beach Haven to experience our Sri Lankan southern hospitality.

Our first stay here in 2009 was on the very strong recommendation of Sri Lankan friends and we vowed to return sooner rather than later. Neither my wife or I recognised some of the negative comments on this site prior to booking our latest trip in December 2011 but we had some concerns.

Those concerns were totally unfounded.

From the moment we were met with refreshing cinnamon tea until the redoubtable Dudley packed our cases in the car at the end of our stay, it was total relaxation.

The attitude of the staff is a delight and may explain some of the complaints - they have a wonderful ability of being remarkably attentive whilst appearing to be laid back which may be misinterpreted as appearing not to care.Nothing could be further from the truth. Some of the younger staff members are still extremely keen and their enthusiasm, whilst appreciated, intrudes slightly into the relaxed ambiance. They could do well to learn from Jacob. If you have the good fortune to have your table served by this gentleman you will understand the point I'm attempting to make. He is like a swan gliding serenely on the surface whilst away from view he is paddling like hell to ensure that you enjoy every minute in his care.

Our room was excellent - the only criticism we could make was the that the Venetian blind in the bathroom was past its best.... this is really struggling to be negative.

I can't believe that someone on here had complained about the food - how absurd! Not only was the buffet absolutely first class but the puddings were out of this world. A real trip down memory lane for persons of a certain age! Unsurprisingly, the dessert table won first prize in the hotel industry awards. Please don't take my word for this - our visit coincided with that of an annual trip of French gamblers(???!) to the hotel. They attacked each meal with that Gallic gusto which is unique, (complete with napkins tied around their necks!) - if it hadn't been up to standard I'm sure that it would have been the kitchen staff at risk rather than the food! When these lovely characters found that my wife was multi-lingual they hijacked her on a regular basis to tell the hotel chefs of their appreciation.

Another negative comment I had read was regarding the beach folk. Yes, at times they can be boorish but they are trying to make a living. If you inform them that you are definitely not interested in purchasing anything today they will leave you alone. You are, however, missing the opportunity to chat to some fascinating people with experiences completely different to your own who would really appreciate the opportunity of honing their language skills on you - this is especially true of the clothing ladies. If all else fails the magic word to use is 'yanda!' whose interpretation is, I believe as rude as it is effective!

We would like to thank the management team of Rifan (General Manager), Tilleth (Food and Beverage Manager) and above all the professional and gregarious Sampath (Assistant Manager) for a superb stay. You have staff and a hotel to be very proud of.

Room Tip: Rather than asking for a balcony, we asked for a ground floor room which opened out directly onto th...

I stayed in this place for few days.. The beach was great and the pool quite never ending . I was really sure if this was a 5 star property , since the gym was absolutely poor and spread for lunch / dinner was quite limited .

Overall its a great place to relax and enjoy the beach.

So that you can enjoy. This is one best Aitkence Spence Hotel. Night you can enjoy music as well as dance. I recomond this hotel to anyone.

We stayed here 5 nights and had a great time, from the greeting to the departure we were made to feel very well looked after.

The hotel is amazing and the buffet is probably to best out of all the hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka.

We had a dinner arranged on the beach and the Chef was great, he sat down with us and planned our 6 course meal, we did say that 3 course would be enough but he isisted and it was expensive (£150 with a bottle of sparkling wine- huge amount for a meal in Sri Lanka let alone England) but it was a 5* meal and very memorable.

One of the staff members -Amenka was very helpful, always going that extra step- providing us with some local knowledge of Colombo for the later part of our trip.

We were going to go Whale watching but the cost of this would have been £100 for the boat and the trip and £50 for the taxi- which we couldn't understand, the cab wouldn't be £50 in London so why so much in Sri Lanka, esp when we hired a driver for the first week of the holiday who drove us everywhere for about £100 for the week!

Basically the hotel is expensive theres nothing to do in the local area, so I wouldnt recommend this if you want a taste of Sri Lankan life.

The cocktails were disappointing, they had a good selection but they were not well trained in the art of cocktail making, I even asked them to make me a simple cocktail which a child could make (Whisky, lemonade, Sweet Vermouth and Agusto bitters) they put fresh lime instead of lemonade, when I told them they got it wrong they didnt understand and then said they would add lemonade on top- whisky with lime is not a good mix and lemonade wont fix it but I was still asked to pay for this undrinkable concoction!

The other annoying thing is that we chose this Hotel as it is apparantly secluded but this doesn't stop the locals waiting at the border of the pool trying to get your attention throughout every day! selling anything from coconuts to sarongs or even advice!!!

The top hotels in Sri Lanka seem to add on a charge to all bills which is misleading, the fine print on the menu says 10% service charge and Govt taxes, I looked into it and Govt charges are 12% but this hotel charges a total of 25.7% instead of 23.2%. Other hotels we went to charge up to 28%, we asked the cashier and he just smirked and said its another Govt charge! which it clearly is not, I felt bad about this as in effect the hotel keeps the "10%" (really about 12.2%!!!) service charge and the workers get no tips which is unfair.

All in all a great trip and a wonderful hotel just a shame that its not really secluded and if they owned the beach and got rid of the locals it would be a fantastic retreat.

Dear Valued Guest,

Thank you very much for the lovely comments you have made on our hotel, cuisine and our staff on the Trip Advisor. We are indeed very thankful to you for selecting our hotel as your holiday destination. It was great having you with us and we look forward to having you once more in our hotel at the earliest possible.

We have noted the comments you have made on the beach agents and wish to mention that the management of the hotel is making every effort to educate them on how they should behave with our foreign guests. In fact we have already started a programme on this. We trust that you will find a changed situation when you visit us next.
