Chuncheon WalkerHill Hotel
Ranked #10 of 16 Hotels in Chuncheon
Reviewed February 21, 2014

We stayed in a double deluxe room for 2 nights in mid-Jan 2014. We usually try to maintain minimum expectations when staying in budget hotels. What matters is the place is clean, comfortable and in a safe neighbourhood. This hotel however didn't leave me very satisfied especially on the clean factor.

Location
Unless you are travelling very light and feeling up to a good half hour walk, don't attempt to walk from the train station. It's a good 1-2km. A 5min cab ride cost us only 2,300won each way. The hotel entrance itself is located in a back lane and can be difficult to spot. The first night we arrived we had the good fortune of meeting a kind korean lady on the train who accompanied us in a cab to the hotel entrance so we didn't get lost. The second day when we took a cab back the driver dropped us off about 2 lanes away because he wasn't sure of the exact location and we had to trace our way back ourselves. Once you have orientated yourself however it's a short walk away from the shopping district where you can find several cafes and an underground mall.

Room
The double deluxe room measures abt 30sqm (reference from agoda) and comes with a jacuzzi tub. First impressions were favourable. Comfortable size and nicely decorated in pink tones. As with all the other korean hotels we stayed on our trip the wooden floors are heated and there is no wardrobe for clothes. Toiletries like shampoo and shower gel are provided in group share bottles as well as extra stuff like aftershave, moisturiser and hair spray although in this hotel all the items on the dressing table were catered especially for men rather than ladies. That, the location in a quiet back alley, a few porn channels on the flatscreen, and how everything except our bed was made the next day seems to confirm the idea that the place functions as a regular love hotel for the locals. That brings me to my gripe on cleanliness.

Another member mentioned how dusty the bed was and we noticed the same thing on ours. I had to use several strips of tape to remove the dust on our pillows before we felt comfortable enough to sleep on it. The next day when we returned we realised the room was made but the bed was not. The housekeeper hadn't even bothered to put our pillows back in place. Makes you wonder if they ever change the bedsheets at all and coupled with the idea of it being a local love hotel makes one feel a little..... We were tempted to make a complaint at the front desk but we weren't well with fever that night due to the harsh weather and were leaving the next morning anyway. There was also a smell in the room reminiscent of cigarette smoke which we took care of by opening the window but noticed it again the next day. Either our housekeeper smokes or that's the scent they use to spray the rooms with..

If not for the dusty unmade bed this would have been a great value-for-money place. Instead, if ever I return to Chuncheon I'd try somewhere else than return here.

Overall experience
(The good)
- Good price
- Close to shopping district
- 2 desktop monitors provided, useful for doing research

(The bad)
- Bed cleanliness questionable
- Hotel entrance may be difficult to find
- (For parents with kids) Be careful of a number of explicit porn channels available on the flatscreen

Ok. Yes. This hotel probably functions as a "love hotel." There are 2 or 3 VIP Clubs, Room Salons, or whatever you want to call it - right around the corner from this hotel. So yea it's probably that. But the room we had was a family room. 3 of us slept there. Great comfort. Nice beds, a computer hooked up to the TV, so we could watch videos on the internet. Free popcorn, coffee. Close distance to downtown/city center. Easy enough to walk to the train station. We stayed here and visited Chuncheon and Nami Island. I'd stay here again.

Not easy to find. Hotel is on the slope and dated.
Room size is not too small.
Reception can't converse in English.
You have to take a taxi to the train centre. Not within walking distance as stated.
Close to the night shopping lane vicinity.
There are restaurants near the shopping lane.

Room Tip: There is no swimming pool or fitness centre. Quiet neighbourhood.

The hotel itself is a little soulless, maybe because of language issues.

Rooms very clean, with very clean bathroom including Japanese style toilet washing system, and range of shampoos. Very well decorated, big and uncluttered. Tea/coffee in room plus full range hairsprays and mosquito spray etc.

Major negative: NO storage space AT ALL.

Free internet and wifi in rooms a big plus.

Situated in centre of town near lots of local food options, but unfortunately a little far from both train and bus stations (about 1-2kms each).

We stayed in the hotel as it was recommended. Its location is the only advantage. We stayed in a room on the 6th floor. The room is dusty and you can see the dust on the bedsheet and you can see the dust floating in the air under the light. The smell of smoking is strong in the corridor but relatively less in the room even though it is supposed to be non-smoking room. The worst is that they didn't do their housekeeping. After being asked, they claimed that the housekeeper made a mistake but subsequently blame us for not telling them that morning that we need the housekeeping that day. It sounded a little ridiculous. They end up giving us our daily supply of towels and water without clearing the rubbish bins. I think it will be better to get another hotel with the price they are charging. I always have great impression of the service of the hotels in Korea including budget hotels but this hotel just managed to destroy it.

The hotel is within walking distance of the Myeong-dong and Dakgalbi streets in Chuncheon. We took a room with a bed. It was clean and spacious (for Korea). There are no heating controls in the room and the floors felt like they were heated to the max. An open window solved that problem.
