We stayed in a double deluxe room for 2 nights in mid-Jan 2014. We usually try to maintain minimum expectations when staying in budget hotels. What matters is the place is clean, comfortable and in a safe neighbourhood. This hotel however didn't leave me very satisfied especially on the clean factor.
Unless you are travelling very light and feeling up to a good half hour walk, don't attempt to walk from the train station. It's a good 1-2km. A 5min cab ride cost us only 2,300won each way. The hotel entrance itself is located in a back lane and can be difficult to spot. The first night we arrived we had the good fortune of meeting a kind korean lady on the train who accompanied us in a cab to the hotel entrance so we didn't get lost. The second day when we took a cab back the driver dropped us off about 2 lanes away because he wasn't sure of the exact location and we had to trace our way back ourselves. Once you have orientated yourself however it's a short walk away from the shopping district where you can find several cafes and an underground mall.
The double deluxe room measures abt 30sqm (reference from agoda) and comes with a jacuzzi tub. First impressions were favourable. Comfortable size and nicely decorated in pink tones. As with all the other korean hotels we stayed on our trip the wooden floors are heated and there is no wardrobe for clothes. Toiletries like shampoo and shower gel are provided in group share bottles as well as extra stuff like aftershave, moisturiser and hair spray although in this hotel all the items on the dressing table were catered especially for men rather than ladies. That, the location in a quiet back alley, a few porn channels on the flatscreen, and how everything except our bed was made the next day seems to confirm the idea that the place functions as a regular love hotel for the locals. That brings me to my gripe on cleanliness.
Another member mentioned how dusty the bed was and we noticed the same thing on ours. I had to use several strips of tape to remove the dust on our pillows before we felt comfortable enough to sleep on it. The next day when we returned we realised the room was made but the bed was not. The housekeeper hadn't even bothered to put our pillows back in place. Makes you wonder if they ever change the bedsheets at all and coupled with the idea of it being a local love hotel makes one feel a little..... We were tempted to make a complaint at the front desk but we weren't well with fever that night due to the harsh weather and were leaving the next morning anyway. There was also a smell in the room reminiscent of cigarette smoke which we took care of by opening the window but noticed it again the next day. Either our housekeeper smokes or that's the scent they use to spray the rooms with..
If not for the dusty unmade bed this would have been a great value-for-money place. Instead, if ever I return to Chuncheon I'd try somewhere else than return here.
