“Truly a Paradise”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

We went to Kuramathi not as honeymooners, but as a family (with 4 kids, ages between 6 and 18). To summarize it, it was a really great vacation! I do not want to repeat what other reviews wrote, just add a few thoughts and point out a few details.

• Kuramathi is one of the biggest islands in the Maledives, so there is a lot more to do there than in other places. They have a fully equipped gym, two different sweet water pools (which was great for the smaller kids), tennis / badminton / volleyball courts, a soccer field, many restaurants, etc. The snorkeling is absolutely fantastic, and the beaches are picture perfect. There is also quite a lot of wildlife in the tropical forest on the island, which, I might add, looks like one big botanical garden.

• most houses have an outdoors bathroom that leads to a jacuzzi (the latter probably designed for the many honeymooners). The kids loved the jacuzzi, and the outdoors bathroom is very practical: nothing fogs up, and the ventilation is excellent and requires no power.

• There were many small touches and details that we thought were excellent: the welcome upon arrival (wet towel to wipe the face, drink in the beautiful reception lounge), the little foot shower in front of the bungalows (to wash the sand off the feet), the perfectly organized departure (we had to leave quite early to catch the return flight in Male).

Room Tip: Basic choice to make is between a "water villa" (on stilts) and a villa on solid ground...

Quite simply stunning!
An amazing experience and well worth the money.
Make sure you go select all inclusive.
The Island BBQ and Reef restaurants are both fantastic. The others are still awesome but these two stood out.
Would go back tomorrow if we could!
AMAZING!

We have just returned from 16 days at this resort and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others but would certainly recommend upgrade to the Select AI before a room upgrade.

This is our 2nd trip to the Maldives, last year we stayed on Meeru in their Beach Villa (Superior Room) on AI and this review will also compare the two resorts which are similar in guest numbers, area (although Kuramathi is long and thin and Meeru is rounder), cost, and quality.

Our seaplane transfer was fine although at 6'3'' I was a bit oversize but its only a 20 min flight. Sea transfer is possible but has more open water than Meeru and is over 30 min longer.

We stayed in a Beach Villa (detached) on Select AI.

The choice of Select AI was taken after much calculation and I still don't know if it was the best choice for value although it was probably was for us (as opposed to paying for a la carte and drink on the island) but it meant we could concentrate on enjoying ourselves rather than looking at the (v. expensive) prices.

The range of AI drinks and cocktails available on Kuramathi is extensive and is far superior to Meeru's offering. It also offers a far wider choice of a la carte eating (at a price) with excellent steaks, jumbo prawns and other seafood. The only downside was the need to book 48 hrs ahead which meant queuing at 7.50am each morning for the day after next.

Luckily my wife was happy to rise in time and enjoy the morning quiet and we managed to get our first or second choice each time. Be aware if you want a lie in you may not get your preferred restaurant or time (7, 8 or 9pm) or at worst you may possibly not get a la carte at all having paid for it although we didn't hear of this happening?

We had breakfast in one of the buffet restaurants every day and a couple of lunches. This together with looking at the buffet dinner a couple of times convinced us that the a la carte route was the only way to go. The quality and display of the food was not good and it seemed the only flies on the island were at the buffet restaurants. The buffet on Meeru were far better and we ate there for the whole time on our visit.

The garden villas (which are generally nearer the beach?) are terraces of 4 and not that much cheaper so on balance we were happy with our selection. the next level up are quite a lot more and we preferred the location of ours which were more central, but this is a personal choice. We found the mattress and pillows to be amongst the most comfortable we have experienced and although there were some creepy crawlies they were small and generally kept out of the way.

As with Meeru the staff are superlative and almost without exception were helpful and cheerful especially when I practised my limited Maldavian language skills. In common with many Brits I'm not a tipper but I read a comment elsewhere on tripadvisor that if you can spend several thousand pounds for the holiday of a lifetime it seems very mean not to share some of your god fortune with those who are giving such good service. We gave $1 per round of drinks and for breakfast, $3 at lunch and $5 at dinner and $25 per week to the room boy (thanks for everything Adam) This seemed well received and didn't seem to have any adverse affect on service although I dont think the tipping was necessary to get good service. We spent about £200 on tips during our stay which although it sounds a lot is still a small % of our total holiday cost. Kuramathi is a cashless island so make sure you take enough with you as you can't get any there (although they will change major currencies). You can take the trip to the neighbouring island where there is a cash machine but this only gives Rufiyaa's which are not preferred as tips and any you don't use are hard to change back.

There are some lovely beaches available although many are narrow and the sand spit at the end of the island is fantastic. But in a number of areas there is rock protection just offshore and elsewhere there is natural rock on the shoreline making entry to the water difficult. The sand in some areas is very coarse and quite hard on the feet. I think in this regard Meeru is superior although they were pumping large amounts of sand from just offshore to form the beaches.

We are not great snorkelers and did hardly any on Meeru but enjoyed that which we did. On Kuramathi we managed to get to the edge of the reef and look down the cliff face and the variety of fish was fantastic.

As I said at the start I don't think you will be disappointed with this resort although be aware the buffet meals are only average.

all was absolutely perfect arrival until the departure!
Staff is really with the small care with you, the island is absolutely sublime, super good maintained, our toilets villa was impeccable, the island is sufficiently large and proposes sufficient things very diversified not to be bored because other islands are really very small. What struck us the most it is that the hotel is complete there is more than 600 people and for as much the organization is such as we never cross anybody we have all the time the impression to be alone in the world and it is really super. We made our baptism of diving bottle within an idyllic framework sea-beds are true paradises, we had access to the spa with massage we slackened with possible, the restaurant which was allotted to us was super and of a diversity of excellent food and very good quality. we had taken the formula all-in BASIC thus we could test the bars and their delicious cocktails all, the whole of staff was more than obliging and of a discression to any test, each morning our room was remade and each evening also with change of the beach and bath towels each day… I would have still so much other things to say on this paradise which I have suddenly missed the words. If one day we are able to be able to do it: we will turn over to Kuramathi!

We did a lot of investigation before we committed to Kuramathi, as it was our first visit to the Maldives. We were right on the reef, and as snorkellers it couldn't have been better. Our comments:
1. We wanted it to be a special vacation so opted for a water villa with jacuzzi for 7 nights. Defintely the right decision. We did not want to leave, which is unusual for us. Expensive, but a must. Several people just stayed for a couple of nights in the water villa and then moved to a beach villa.
2. We didn't need to use the pool (only on our last day) as the combination of the sea, jacuzzi and view made us not want to leave our villa.
3. Villa was fantastic - spacious, quiet (apart from the sound of the ocean); very private, comfortable and large bed, lovely rainforest shower; ipod dock and great hifi; free coffee machine. UK style plug sockets
4. We could only book full board but had the option of upgrading upon arrival so could look at the restaurants before committing. We decided to stay full board and pay for any drinks and non-inclusive restaurant meals we wanted, and ended up paying $450 extra at the end of the week, which we were very happy with. We are not big drinkers (4 beers a night max). Wine is expensive (understandably) but you can download all the menus and wine lists before you go to see how much it will be.
5. Food in our allocated restaurant was buffet for every meal, and while it was not the best we have had it was more than adequate. If you are going for pure romance then splash out on select all inclusive as the restaurants are totally different and beautiful surrounds (Reef and Island BBQ recommended).
6. Staff are all wonderful and extremely friendly. We tipped extra at the end of the stay and they were extremely grateful
7. We had reef sharks under our deck most mornings, a lot of shoals of fish, a Moray eel, a lion fish and a sting ray. We also watched two pods of dolphins and a whale shark (which was apparently very rare) swim along the reef from our deck.
8. Getting to the reef is a bit tricky. Wait until high tide so that the channel is deep enough. We had 4 days of great snorkelling (2 visits a day), one day when it was too stormy to go to sea and two days of poor vision but still went out once (when you get deeper vision clears). Reef is alive with fish and corals. Expect to see: 6 or more species of Butterfly fish, plenty of triggerfish and parrotfish, banner fish; Emperor and Empress Angel Fish, surgeon fish, groupers, black tip reef sharks (up to 2 metres long), rays (only saw one), unicorn fish, grouper, trevally and many more. Defintely invest in a good underwater camera (ours went wrong after 2 days).
9. We took the seaplane - 20 minutes. Expensive, but would have been a long trip by boat.
10. What could have been better? Bus/buggy frequency; quality of buffet food some days was a bit lacking. Other that than it was close to perfect.
In summary our best vacation for quality of accommodation and snorkelling. We thoroughly recommend it.

Room Tip: We had water villa 245. Nice and central for the best part of the reef. You want to be towards the l...

I can't even put into words how amazing Kuramathi was. We stayed in January for a week after 6 days in Sri Lanka and it was perfect.
It's like being in a dream you almost need pinching when you wake up every morning.
On arrival we were upgraded from a Beach Villa to a Deluxe Beach Villa with Jacuzzi. We were like kids in a sweet shop looking around the room. It was spotlessly clean and beautifully done.
The room boys cleaned twice a day and sprayed each night for mozzis as well as restocking free the minibar.
We went all inc and our buffet restaurant was lovely, our waiters were always cheerful and chatty as we're the other staff. The food was always well cooked and fresh and nothing was too much trouble. The chocolate mouse on our first night was the best!
We had also booked for a special meal on the Serenade Jetty which was magical. The food was exquisite and the setting was so romantic it was a very special evening and a memory we will treasure for a long time.
We loved spending our evenings at the Sand Bar curled up sippin cocktails under the stars. The sand spit at the top of the island is just amazing as well, total paradise. We also had a couples massage and a herbal bath with champagne and fruit at the spa which was lovely we would recommend it to anyone.
I could go on forever, we can't speak highly enough of every bit of Kuramathi, there is nothing we would have changed and we are already working out how to save up to go again!

What's not to love!

Idyllic setting, perfect weather, attentive staff great cocktails (83 of them at last count, I challenge you to try them all!).

I must admit the thought of 7 days doing nothing wasn't too appealing, but by the end of the week I was an expert in filling my days with glorious, relaxing, sun drenched nothing-ness!

Do take advantage of the snorkelling, its just AMAZINNG. But DO wear a burn vest or a t-shirt otherwise you'll fry your back.

I cannot recommend this resort highly enough (tye even have their own swanky lounge at the sea plane place). It's as close to heaven on earth we'll ever get!

Room Tip: upgrade to the select all inclusive, you get to use the other restaurants on the Island as the main...
