“Beautiful hotel in amazing island”
Reviewed September 16, 2011

The location is perfect... Everything is beautiful and romantic in this place! And getting with the sea plane is fantastic!!!! The views are really nice!
My husband and I stayed for 8 nights on March 2011. We stayed 2 nights in a beach front room and 6 nights in a bangalow over water with jacuzzi (just perfect! Stay in this one!).
We choose the Select all inclusive (it´s the best and worth every dollar/euro), you will have great meals. Make this choice.
The dives are fantastic and unfforgettable (both snorkeling and scuba). We made a lot of scuba diving and the dive school is great, the staffs are very nice.
The dive spots are amazing (lots of sharks in all of them). Some of them below:
- Safari to Ari atol - the best one! Gorgeus! Must do
- The hammerhead point - we made it twice, but no hammerheads (it happens, ok)
- Madivaru - beautiful! very strong current (drift dive)
- Manta Block - breathtaking! just perfect (4 of them around us and playing with us all the time!)
- Veligandu - this is the place to see lots lots lots of morays - all kind of them (big rock wall)
The snorkeling is fabulous too, in front of the bangalows with jaccuzzi (we saw everything!!! just like scuba!)
The beaches are simple the best!!! Cristal, clear, calm and warm water... and the blue of the ocean... what a scenary! We just loved a special place with sand banks, on a extreme point of the island. You feel like you're in heaven! And when the sunset is comming, you're really believe the paradise is here.
The ray feeding is fun! Don't miss (every day, in the afternoon/evening)
Another thing: the sharks are all around you on the water. You will see them everywhere! You will loose the fear of them (if you have)... just amazing!!!!

After a lot of research we spent our holiday in Kuramathi and it was worth every euro/dollar you spend there. The island is quite big for the Maldivian standards, but this gives you a lot of options with the accommodation and dining. Definitely go Select AI! This is the best way you could take the maximum from your stay there. All restaurants are very good except the Asian one.
The snorkeling and dive centre were just as perfect as you can imagine. The island's lush vegetation is simply unbelievable!
Personally for me the best villas on the island (excluding the honeymoon villas) are the Beach villas with jacuzzi, which are on East side of the island! Be aware the there is hardly an beach on the south part of the island.
Definitely I think that this is the best 4 star hotel in Maldives!

Room Tip: Check the virtual map of the island on their web site

I am not one for giving out advice, but in this case I made an exception to give my view and opinion. Kuramathi island resort is a beautiful island that has a lot of character. Not only is it the 2nd biggest island resort in the Maldives , but has that romantic feel, the views from sunrise to sunset inconjuction with having lagoon and reef sides, it's amazing agricultural landscape consisting of a 300 year old bayan tree (something out of the film predator), nature trail, botanic walk and an hydroponics garden ( not much to look at). The views are amazing all round the island, especially when walking from the west end of the island from the water villas up to the end of the path towards the sandbank, passing through the laguna bar and beach villas. There are little branch of paths that lead you unto the beach, that leave you feeling as though the island is saying " have a peek at me"... (pictures included).

My girlfriend and I booked our holiday with Kuoni and it has to be said that they were helpful to arrange my girlfriends 40th birthday arrangements prior to arrival. All correspondence via telephone and any unanswered questions were resolved before departure.

We flew with air Sri Lanka and despite some air tuber lance, our flight was a comfortable one. With our luggage being over the permitted allowance including hand luggage, nothing was said at the check-in desk, as the flight was 3/4 full. Their economy seats are larger than most airlines and I found the food on the plane ok. On arrival at Male' we identified the Kuoni rep which in turn directed us to the sea plane check-in desk. We had to pay an excess for our luggage which was only $19 US dollars. There was a slight delay with our sea plane transfer but in total we waited 1 hr. Using the lounge was an added bonus, as refreshments were there to be bought. Landing in the sea was an experience, and the journey to kuramathi was only 20 minutes.

Once at the reception on kuramathi, greeted with cold face towels and cold fruit juices, we were told our room number as we had booked a water villa with jacuzzi. As I had done some research prior to arrival, I knew that it wasn't one of the rooms that we wanted being near the top end off the villas. The kunoi rep gave us the option to have a look at our assigned room, and if we didn't like it then they would change to the one we originally requested. This was done very easily and our luggage was transferred.

There were over 600 people on the island and I was told that they were running around 90% capacity. There are 5 bars, 6 a la carte restaraunts, 3 buffet restaurants and many places to sun bathe and swim... We didn't feel as though they were that many people there. The most you saw of people was at some of the bars in the evening, on the beach and at the Buffett.

We booked the all inclusive select and was happy with our choice. Going out to dinner at either the Indian - tandoor mahal, Thai -the Siam garden, Italian - the palm, the coffe shop, the reef and the island barbecue made our holiday peak towards the evening followed by having 6 bars to visit for several night caps. We were astonished by the cost of the meals and drinks as we were easily scoring up around $200 US dollars per night on our 10 night stay. Getting suited and booted(smart/casual) for a meal every evening gave our holiday that pleasant experience.

We were assigned the maalafiya restaurant for buffet meals which we happily enjoyed breakfast and some lunches. Only once at our stay that we had the same thing twice for lunch, but there are plenty of choices and you can choose the amount you want on your plate. 10 days of solid eating and drinking of over indulgence of red meat, veal, chicken, fish, lobsters and lovely deserts, took it's toll by the 6th day. The restaurant meals are large and do value money and have good taste. The reef restaurant was our favourite. Its location and the taste of the food is far better than the island BBQ if your into grilled food. It was the first time I tried veal and it was cooked surpebly. I managed to try A couple of lobsters from both of these restaurants, but once again favoured the reef restaurant, as the lobster was accompanied with that beautiful orange butter sauce.. Mmmm....

There are many excursions and we tried out the island hoping. It's a morning start at 8:30 to 4:30 pm in the evening. We visited thodoo island to see how the locals live and what they cultivate some parts of the island to produce fruit and veg in which they sell on to other resorts. From there, we visited another island resort called veligandu. The island is nice, but just seemed really dull and boring. If you want to spend thousands of pounds to sit in the sun and lounge, then Veligandu is another place in the Maldives for you. Very nice island but appeared to me life- less. We spent an hour and a half snorkelling and relaxing and had to move on to our next scheduled stop. We later arrived at an unhabitated island called Madivaru, were we had with other guest a BBQ . Then our German tour guide had some of us walk across to a near by sand banked small island called Madivaru finolhu. I was surprised that our tour guide said it was okay to walk in the lagoon to that island. The water level got as far up my waist. The walk in the sea took 10-15 minutes and was an experience I will never forget. The excursion was worth every penny and could only wish that i could do that again.

There are a few shops on kuramathi consisting of a jewellery, clothing and souvenir shop. A free trip ( courtesy of kuoni) to the neighbouring island Rashdoo has many soverneir shops but be warned, that's all you get there. It also nice to see how the locals live. They are friendly but as you will see that they do depend a lot on the tourist industry to accommodate their families. We did however met one of the most kindest gentlemen/ shop owner who we paid more for items that we had bought, but still insisted on two occasions to give us free gifts. His genoristy will not be forgotten. The sunset cruise was nice, but the weather being cloudy hindered the view of the sun setting.

To sum up my holiday experience as this is my second visit to the maldives in 9 months, kuramathi was far better.

Here are my tips when graver ing to maldives/ kuramathi.

1: Have a budget and price for your holiday.

2: Travel with Sri-Lanka air lines.. Their luggage allowance is more than most 30 Kg. Their seats have a little more room. Air plane food can be awful, but it was ok... Not saying anymore on that subject.

3: travel to kuramathi by sea plane to the island and boat trip back. Your luggage will be lighter going, and more heavier as you've bought gifts for friends and family. No weight cost via boat, but may have to leave earlier in the morning to get your connecting flight. Via boat is a last minute views and more camera action !!!... 10 hrs from the uk to Maldives is long enough. don't feel like another hour or so via boat. You'll just want to get there.. And in a hurry, but wanna leave slowly via boat.

4: if you can afford it, go ALL INCLUSIVE SELECT... You'll be crazy not too... Food and drink is really expensive. Eat and drink till your hearts content and not worry about the prices.. Good luck if you could eat the amount of food 4 times a day. Buffet food is just as good, but the same table, same faces and same place for every meal is very repetitive. If you're not happy with the amount of food, you can order more or of another choice at no additional cost !!!...

5:go for a water jaccuzzi villa. Insect free, more space and your very own sun loungers with a bit more added privacy.

6: do carry a torch for night and the best mosquito repellent " JUNGLE FORMULA " and jungle formula after bite if you're bitten.

7: carry bottled repellents and cosmetics in your suitcase !!!... They can't confiscate it at the airport as hand luggage.

8: water jaccuzzi apartment. Do get the maintenance people to demonstrate how it works and how to drain and refill the water accordingly, and clean it to your statisfaction. YOU CAN LEAVE THE JACCUZZI ON WHILE YOU LEAVE THE ACCOMADATION. The water will be hot when you come back. Air conditioning and jaccuzzi is on a separate supply not operated by the door entry and power card.

9: if you have a special occasion whilst visiting, liase with your holiday rep and kuramathi management before you leave. Have it in writing when you arrive.

10: have your buffet breakfast early (7:30 am) to book your resturaunts in advance.. You' ll always get want resturaunts you want that early in the morning.

11: discover scuba diving is well worth it.

12: island hoping and the lagoon walk... Excellent experience.

13: recommended dishes.... Yellow fin tuna with pasta and cappers from the palm, including their range of home made ice creams, lobster(with orange butter sauce) and veal from the reef, australian rib eye steak from the island BBQ,tandoori chops from the tandoor mahal restaurants.

Hopes this review helps as many other people seem to be writing the same thing.

Good luck and happy holidays...

OK! Do NOT listen to anybody that says that this island is not perfect!!!!
Me and my husband travelled here for our honeymoon in July and there are no words to describe how perfect it was.
All the 5* reviews say it all really but il add my 2 cents.

1. The island itself is stunning and even though is is one of the largest of islands you never feel crowded but as well as this the island has a great night life! There are a few excursions to choose from. We did the snorkelling safari which was amazing. There are so many fish to see and as a bonus we swam with a turtle. The sunset cruise is also a must as it is so romantic. Everyday we were swimming with the reef sharks which i know sounds terrifying but it is just the opposite and the stingray feeding is out of this world!!!

2. The rooms are gorgeous. We had a Beach Villa with a Jacuzzi and it was fantastic. The staff (who were amazing) came in 3 times a day to clean, change bed sheets, empty and refill the jacuzzi and you never saw them.

3. The food was amazing! I would recommend to EVERYONE that you choose the SELECT ALL INCLUSIVE. If i had not choosen this i would have been dissapointed as the 5 al a carte restaurants are far superior to the main buffet restaurant.
There are a few bars to choose from but i would recommend the Fung Bar. The staff are awesome (Anu especially) and they are all entertaining!

I would/and have been reccomending this island to everyone since i got home and hope to god i get to go again! xxx

Stayed here in July for 2 weeks on select all inclusive. I would echo what most have said, select all inclusive is the way forward. Food and drinks were exceptional. I could write a lot of good things about this resort but I will try not to replicate most of what has already been said and list a few tips.

We initially booked a boat for our transfer there and seaplane back but were upgraded to a plane out which I believe was due to lack of people taking a boat so was easier for them to put us on a plane. This turned out to be not much of a blessing as after waiting for an hour and half we were then told there was no room on the plane and had to wait for the next one so spent our first 3 hours in the maldives at the airport. The only advice I can offer up here is once you get off the plane run to the desk to make sure you are 1st in line for the plane.

We were upgraded to a beach villa with Jacuzzi on the reef side of the island about 50 yards up from the ecological centre. We walked up and down the island practically every day for 2 weeks and were really pleased with the location, it seemed to have the widest beach area and was a lot less crowded than other areas of the beach. Room was nice and very comfy, TV, iPod dock and stereo. It did say on the website that they hire DVDs but they have dropped this service. We had a few days of rain were that would have been useful but we brought a few DVDs anyway so watched one of those but the TV had a lot of English channels and Star Movies as well as HBO which had films on, about 6 sports channels, 6 news channels, National geographic etc so good choice of TV if you do want to watch it. If you do take DVDs they work through the CD player unit and rig up to the TV via the AV channel, took me a while to work out. On the subject of working things out, also had trouble with the Jacuzzi but turns out that it needs to be filled to a certain level before it will operate so the room boy just came and topped it up and it was all OK after that.

All restaurants were great and easy to get tables. You can book 2 days in advance i.e. arrive on Saturday and book Saturday night, Sunday night and Monday night, then on Sunday you book Tuesday night and so on. Easy to get tables in all restaurants a couple of days in advance with exception of the Reef, this only has 12 covers so you need to get up early and book to be in with a chance of getting your table, depends how busy but first couple of times I tried to book before lunchtime and already full so just got up at 6 one morning, booked it and went back to bed. The Island BBQ I thought offered a better selection and good ambience. Lobster is extra and seems to be $80 on all menus, served in a variety of different ways depending on the restaurant you are in. We had a lobster in the Reef and got 20% off ( not the 50% as I read previously ). It was worth the extra expense and enough for 2 people so we were happy we had it. One thing to watch out for tat he Island BBQ though, you may want to avoid booking on a Saturday as they have the movie night on the beach that night and its very loud so takes away from the experience a bit. The Thai restaurant have buffet nights on Sunday so it’s good if you want to try lots of dishes, did this and really enjoyed it and then went another night and ordered from the a la carte. The Indian restaurant also have a buffet night but on a Friday, this was less impressive as it was really quite and we went late it seemed like all the food had been sitting around a while and was dried up and cold, this was the only food complaint of the whole holiday. Coffee shop was great for lunch and they have an omelette on the menu if you did miss breakfast and wanted something breakfast like. Italian was also great both for lunch and also in the evening when they have a greater selection on offer. Drinks vary from bar to bar and we found drinks in the fung bar seemed to be the best, cocktails were better presented and mixed better in our opinion. We did take our left over wine from the restaurant to have back in the room which was nice and there are wine glasses in the room.

You are never going to please everyone but the island is big enough to escape the noise if you wanted a quite drink as the entertainment moves around from bar to bar. There are musicians, a full band and also a disco but the disco is very loud and will be either a crowd pleaser or a bar emptier depending on your outlook. Also Karaoke at the Havana bar which it took us a week to find. It’s actually inside and behind the Dhoni bar. If you want a late night though sometimes the only option will be whichever bar has the disco in it as they say they close when the last guest leaves but one night we went to go into the bar at about midnight and it was all shut up but other nights we drank to 2am so depends on how busy the island is.

Gym and Spa
Gym decent enough, 2 running machines, 1 Bike, free weights, lat pull down and a couple of bench’s. Towels available there and although there are showers in the changing room never any shower gel so you should maybe take some from your room. Spa has lots of treatments, best value was the couple massage at $120 so at $60 each worked out the cheapest massage option.

I'm not a strong swimmer but enjoy snorkelling, its good off the pier but can have a bit of a current at times so be careful. You can hire lifejackets for $3 a day at the water sports centre which helps if you are not so confident in the water. There are plenty of reef sharks around and in the spot of beach on the reef side there are always plenty of them, they are quite harmless and give you a wide berth while in the water. I did have a very large titan trigger fish swim at me though and they are a worry as will take a bite out of you if they feel you are threatening their nest. The eco centre is very good though and they will give you advise on what types of fish to look for and help you identify ones you have seen also.

Sunset Cruise
You have to put your name down on the list a few days in advance. The list is located in the main reception and you just fill it in yourself. You get a free spot on the cruise if you are all inclusive select. Its luck really if you get to see dolphins or a sunset or both, we saw dolphins so we were quite happy. If you get a low tide in the evening walk to the sand bank on the far end of the island past the reef restaurant and you can see great sunsets from there so if you miss it on the boat you can still see a great sunset.

Hope this is useful. Any specific questions feel free to message me.

My wife and I went to Kuramathi Ilsand Resort in August for our honeymoon, and it is absolutely perfect.

In fact, it's even better than what you have seen in photos on the internet. The beauty of the island is breathtaking. August is typically part of their wet season, but we had one small shower, the rest of the time was bright, hot sunshine. The beaches are untouched and naturally beautiful, and the sea is perfect for anyone snorkelling out there.

There are plenty of excursions to choose from, but I definately recommend the Sunset Cruise, where we were taken to the middle of the Indian Ocean to watch the sunset, but the added bonus is that you get to see dolphins as well. The Snorkelling Safari is also worth a look.

We stayed in one of the Jacuzzi Water Villas, and the rooms were absolutely perfect. Spacious, clean, and very romantic in the jacuzzi. Staff were excellent and deserved their $15 tip.

The restaurants get booked quickly, especially The Reef seafood restaurant, and you can only book 2 days in advance. All restaurants though are worth visiting, Siam Garden, Tandoor Mahal and The Reef being my particular favourites. The staff are excellent, and I would recommend the Select All Inclusive Package to anyone making the visit.

Sitting on deluxe sofas, on the beach at night, looking at the stars, whilst drinking cocktails is exactly what you can do here. Walks along the beach to watch the sun go down is another option, or plenty of excursions. You are in the middle of nowhere, and that is what makes this resort so perfect.

I would say this is not really suitable for children, as there is not much for them to do, and everything is very adult themed. It is ideal for couples for a romantic getaway!

Highly recommended!

Room Tip: If on honeymoon, you should automatically get a local upgrade.
