This was our 2nd trip do the Maldives, having been at Laamu Six Senses previously. Villingili is quite different, a bigger island with more tropical green. I liked this a lot.
The house reef is acceptable at Whispering Palms.
The team did its utmost to make us have a great time. Thanks for the birthday "party"
Thanks for showing us all the backstage technology that makes this all happen, compliments here to the engineers running the show.
I didn't like to be informed at payment time that Fashala and the BQ had extra charges! Should have been informed in advance...

Bye all of you turtles, sharks, reef fish, flying foxes....

Where do we start? We went to the Maldives for our honeymoon - it was a first visit to these beautiful atolls and we had a magical time.

We were met at Male airport by a young man holding a Shangri-la sign. He led us to the domestic flight terminal, helped us check in our bags and then took us to a private Shangri-lounge while we waited for our domestic flight to Gan.
After a longhaul flight from London, and months of wedding planning followed by a packed wedding day, we dozed most of the flight to Gan, but were gently woken to be presented with a certificate from Shangri-la to say we had crossed the Equator into the Southern Hemisphere which was a nice touch.

Landed in Gan to again be taken to a fully air conditioned Shangrila lounge, where we were met by staff from the resort - Peony is a really warm and enthusiastic Shangri-la rep who greets you as soon as you arrive. Few minutes wait and then onto a short speedboat ride to the private island resort. The staff at this place are amazing and really make the holiday special by all their little touches which reflects we think evidence of excellent management as well as the warmth of the staff themselves.

Every single member of staff we came across were Excellent with a capital E, but special mention must go to a special few who made our stay particularly memorable - Latheef, our villa host, arranged things without us barely having to ask and even before we knew what we wanted, arranging buggies, romantic meals, activities, in a subtle and unimposing way - excellent. Jessica, who met us with a warm smile and chat every morning at breakfast to start us in a good mood for the whole day. Katie, Kim and Meggy who we met a couple of days into our trip who were so friendly and looked out for us during the week. The cake and card from Katie and Kim to congratulate us was very sweet. Also, Ajit the bartender at the Manzu bar, Choy and all his evening staff at Javvu, the staff at breakfast especially Zahid who met us every morning with fresh pastries and a smile, the chefs who made us eggs and pancakes every morning just how we like them, Jennifer from the health centre, Peter the resident marine biologist, Shihad the lifeguard who looked out for us during our snorkelling.

There are a whole range of activities, some charged, some complimentary allowing guests to choose - we chose a mix of paid and complimentary activities. The spa is excellent, albeit a little pricey for some treatments. We tried a general couples massage, a cowrie shell massage, introduction to tai chi and meditation. Dilip, one of the masseurs, has magic hands, particularly good if you like a medium to firm massage - ask for him, although all the masseurs are good.
There is a great health centre with gym, jacuzzi, steam room and sauna.
Travelling around the island is a breeze - either call up a buggy ( which is like an island taxi service) or each villa has a couple of bikes. We travelled by bike most of the time, which is a great way to explore the island.
Need anything during your stay? Just call up your villa host with a little mobile that each villa is given or call the service centre - Mark at the service centre will greet you with a friendly hello and can arrange anything you need including DVDs to watch in the evening before retiring to bed, if that's your thing!

We knew that we wanted a honeymoon that would be restorative as well as achingly beautiful, in scenery and in the resort service. That is exactly Shangrila. We had experience of the hotel chain in Asia so hoped it would deliver. And it did beyond our expectations. We are city people but like our luxury too with an amazing villa and a beach if we want to relax by our private pool, beach but have home comforts such as TV, films, a gym and activities. You can find it all here and do as little or as much as you want to. Nothing is ever too much or a problem.

We researched the honeymoon packages very thoroughly, and we wanted to spend a bit of money in order to have a luxurious time. The Maldives in general is not cheap, it is not a package hols to Tenerife, so you pay for what you want. In our opinion, a once in a lifetime experience - it was more than worth it for the memories and special treatment. We wanted to spoil ourselves. We can't afford to do it annually, but we're already thinking of when we can return.

Because of our experience we have joined the Shangrila members club and hope to try other destinations. If the Shangrila executives are reading this review, you can just tell from all the reviews on the Maldives resort that you have an amazing gem on your hands, as a result of an amazing team. An exemplary model of success.

And to Rene, it was a shame that we missed an opportunity to meet you at the Weds management cocktail because we wanted to deliver our glowing report of your team in person. We hope to be back and will highly recommend the resort to all our friends and family.

Thanks for reading to the end if you got this far, we don't typically write these reviews but felt so strongly about this jewel in the Indian Ocean that we just had to.

Room Tip: We stayed in a Palm Breeze villa which had a private pool and overlooked the Indian Ocean. We absolutely loved it. If you are bothered by the sound of strong ocean waves in the evening, try a villa on the other side of the island. If you want snorkelling as soon as you open your front door, try a Whispering Palms villa.

In brief, Shangri-La Villingili is one of the best hotels I have ever visited and I may say the best, you don’t have to search for all the details as everything is well take care of, just book it, relax before your arrival as they are really preparing to host you and then enjoy each second from the second you reach Male. The combination of Shangri-La expertise with Villingili Island is an exceptional blend of natural paradise with all 5 star luxurious services that a resort can ever provide to pamper you during your whole stay.

In details,
All the credits at the booking stage goes to:
Franck Sebire from www.iHaveNotBeenThere.com who provided full assistance and information and made everything so smooth with a really special offer that made it possible for us to try this resort.
Neryda from the reservation department is a really wonderful helper; she will give an answer to all and will make you love the resort, your Shangri la experience start from this stage,

We stayed for 9 nights, with 2 kids ( 5 year and 1 year ) in a deluxe beach villa.
At the arrival to Male, Shangri La representatives guided us to the lounge waiting the internal flight and they took care of all the flight check in procedures, from this point you will actually forget your luggage as they will deliver it directly to your room ( no luggage pickup in GAN)
At the arrival to GAN airport, we were guided to an exclusive Shangri La lounge , than directly to the island with a 5 minute boat ride ( they actually had the time on the boat to pamper you with coconut juice and wet towels). At the arrival to the island, you can feel that a whole arrival ceremony was prepared for you, all management staff were there to greet you, they actually knew my kids names as well. We actually arrived around 11 am, but the villa needed a 5 min to get ready and with a nice gesture they guided us to Manzaru and offered us drinks (they didn’t have to, as we were actually arriving before check in time and it was just a 5 min wait, but this is Shangri La )

Our deluxe pool villa, as in the pictures, very well arranged, always well cleaned, huge bedroom with very large indoor toilet (and outdoor /indoor showers), enough space to fit an extra bed and a baby coat. The villa pool is also a large one, always clean, from this villa type you can actually access the ocean side where you cannot swim but still nice view. I was actually afraid from this point, but I felt it was so easy to access the sandy beach by bike or buggy or the snorkeling points walking so this issue was not a disadvantage it actually provided more privacy to the villa. The living room we actually turned it in to a play and eating space for our kids!!!

The overall Island is a real piece of paradise with coconut trees all over the place, very well maintained landscaped gardens, clean pathways, you can feel jungle feeling in some parts, and the natural lakes give a plus to the landscape beauty(our daughter loved the fish feeding at the lake ) . The beach is kept clean from grass all day long (you can see the effort done). Sustainable strategies, ECO center activities are a special side that you will explore thru your stay in this hotel

As far for the entertainment part, a full schedule was handed to us for the whole week full of different activities (many are complementary) and many trips are as well offered, while we actually planned to take 2 or 3 trips we actually didn’t feel that we had enough from the pool and the beach, so we only tried tennis once (the health club staff were amazing and even offered us a free training session), we used as well the complementary kayak from water sports center near the pool.
The Kids Club hosted our kids every day with babysitting for our little boy, the service is 100% perfect, for my daughter they actually did different activities each day, she actually drew that the kids club was the best of her trip. They took care of our boy in a very professional way in the baby sitting hours, we felt comfortable to leave him each day as he was more than happy to go with his babysitter.
I went diving for 4 times, and it is a real 5 star diving center from the equipment, the boat, staff…… thanks to Tatiyana for all, I think I experienced best of my life dives with them , check the Manta Point

I need to stress on the management team behavior in this hotel, as it is the first hotel we notice such care from the top management in the guests, they were actually checking our needs and playing with our kids every day, handed a gift to them at departure….., we are really grateful to the hotel manager, manager assistant (our small boy loved to play with him) and many thanks to Jessica from guest relations who made sure that everything was as expected, she cared for all details ,
As for the staff, we liked the issue that most of the staff are from the nearby island, still with a very professional behavior, very well trained, smiley face, always doing the best to please the guests,
Our Villa Host Iby was excellent, helped us all of our stay, made sure we get everything we need, with no faults,

At whispering palms area snorkeling was as great as it can be, fully supervised by life guards, you can see lot of different types of marine life meters from the beach, spotted black tip shark once and sea turtle twice, with suitable inside area for children, my 5 year old was able to experience her first snorkeling session easily,

We used the Pool and pool area everyday with the best part of the sandy beach over there, the small cabanas around the pool were extremely helpful, our son had a 1 hour nap their each day while we could stay in the pool, and refreshments were complimentary distributed

The Beach can be rated around 8/10 with some rocks/dead corals here and there that make it a bit difficult to walk at some areas

The Restaurants service and food were of a high class resort with great service, Dr Ali is essential to give diversity in food menus, all our thanks to Dr Ali manager who tried all ways to please us and respond to our special kids needs

The hard moments of Departure were made special by the management team, we were able to keep the room until minutes of departure (6pm), they make sure the transfer to the airport is just minutes before the airplane departure, Shangri la representative in Male even welcomed us again in Male again and helped us with the check in ( it was nice especially with 2 kids)

The only things that we see it could be enhanced are:
- Provide more menu option at Javu
- Maybe if we had the living room connected to the bedroom it would have been better,
- Adding some small touches in the rooms each day or at the turn down service would have been nice

It will be our dream to visit this resort again, thank you shangrila team

Room Tip: Deluxe rooms have good privacy Beach villas less privacy more expensive better beach

Our first trip to Maldives, and this resort is truly amazing! It was a long way from home, and took us two flights to get here after stopping in Singapore, but it's worth the trip. We checked in three days ago, and had a villa over the water, with the coral reefs as our backyard. The water is so clear that we can see the colorful fishes swimming by while standing on our deck. There were a number of families arriving on the same day as us. Check-in was a breeze with our villa host Issey. He was our contact for everything, and he was very attentive and easily accessible. The senior staff were everywhere and very approachable. We saw Gwendolyn, the Resident Manager, everyday at breakfast and Sunny/Nelson at the Village was informative and such a delight! Yesterday, we had requested a budgie/golf cart to the restaurant for dinner and had a lovely young lady driving us. We later discovered that she was Gwen's secretary. It's Ramadan now, and the staff all chipped in and worked together to get the guests around while the Muslim staff have their break-fast in the evenings. We thought that was great team work! The grounds were immaculate and we love seeing the large geckos everywhere on the well-groomed paths. The restaurants were adequate although there was a confusion on the daily Asian lunch at Javvu that was on the daily activities sheet but the female hostess insisted that that was for dinner. Wished I had the activities sheet in my hand, but didn't felt like arguing with her over it. The Dive center was very efficient, and provided snorkel equipment for the family. Tatiana was a great dive instructor. The dolphin cruise was amazing as we saw so many dolphins racing along the boat and flipping up into the air right next to the boat. The 9-holed golf course was beautiful and well maintained with great views. The room attendant was very great. We snorkeled everyday, at least twice a day, and he always had enough clean towels for us. I usually don't write review while still at the property, but I couldn't help myself and wrote this on the deck while listening the the waves. A great stay so far and we have more days in this lovely locale before we head back home.

Unfortunately our on our first trip to the Maldives I am afraid that we have set the bar very, very high. From our arrival in Male to our departure from the resort we were looked after in true 5 star fashion. The resort is big enough for an extended stay (i.e. you don't feel confined on a tiny island) however, it is still intimate and exclusive. If you are traveling with children it is comforting that there is a sizeable and populated island very close with medical facilities and an airport. If you don't have children the resort is big enough that other people's children won't bother you :o) Either way I highly recommend the Shangri-La - it's the kind of experience you are expecting. PS - and remember, the Shang has the best breakfast experience of any hotel - bar none...
