“Good value, and they will advise on other tours in the area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 20, 2010

Good value - US$120 per night for a family of 4 in two interleading rooms. If you stay 5 nights, they throw in 2 free airport transfers (max 4 persons) value US$28 each way, so the fifth night is almost free.

The trip from the airport is about 90 mins.

The setting overlooking the pool and distant jungle is magic.. As other reviewers have noted, the noise of occassional motorbikes from the road below the hotel is annoying during the day, and breakfast is basic, but those are the only negatives. We loved our stay away from the chaos of Kuta, and the hotel staff at Alam Sari went out of their way to help at every turn.

There's a free shuttle 3 times a day to and from Ubud 20 mins drive away - would recommend you use this to go into Ubud for shopping, browsing and several dinners as a change from the hotel restaurant fare.

The location suits tours around the area, and the hotel staff will advise on best value for money. We visited Ubud, did white water rafting on Telaga Waja river with lunch and pick up from Alam Sari hotel (US$32pp) , Taro Elephant Park 20 mins away (hotel drop off and pick up), 3 hour hotel car charter which lets you view the volcano and visit rice paddies for photos and the herb gardens. Would also recommend the bike tour (downhill all the way) from the volcano back to the hotel.

Take the hotel's free 3 hour village tour on your first day to get a great insight into the local village and religious culture of Bali - when you travel elsewhere in Bali, what you have learnt from the free village tour will give you great insight into other things you see in Bali

Alam sari is an experience. Organic vegetable and spice garden on site, walking tour of village, free bus into town, very professional staff and a very local ubud experience. Lovely spa on site.

Alam sari is located out of Ubud. The special ambience of life in Bali is enriched by the staff. I would not hesitate to recommend this as a place to stay. Do try the evening cooking glass. A fantastic experience. The price is right.

We stayed at Alam Sari for the first time last April. After a long drive from the airport, we arrived at this charming place in what seemed the middle of paradise. From the beginning of our stay to the all-too-soon end, the staff were more than willing and available to make our stay as delightful as possible. We were never disappointed... whether it be the daily breakfast (included in our room), or any other meal. In many respects, it felt like we were staying with long-time friends. While there, I contracted a throat/ear infection and the staff were quick to make sure that I got the medical attention I needed. The views from our room were idylic as we looked out on a rice paddy below with the wild jungle beyond. Peaceful and tranquil. This is a wonderful place to stay if you want to experience authentic Bali.

Stayed 3 nights in early September in a standard room. Extremely clean and spacious room with a lovely large terrace outside. The staff were all very friendly and obliging. We had already spent 3 nights in Ubud so were more interested in spending time at the hotel than on shopping or sightseeing. We very much enjoyed the free walking tour for guests to Keliki village and highly recommend it. The hotel surroundings were peaceful and the rather distant sound of local traffic at times didn’t really bother us. We dined at the hotel restaurant every night and found the meals to be reasonably priced and quite good.

having recently returned from this hotel i have to agree with the previous review.
We were also pre warned about the noise but it was much louder and constant than we had expected.
we were also frequently disturbed by noise from the neighbouring rooms very early in the morning ( young children) as the rooms are quite close together.

The worst thing by far was the food.......it was twice the price of a really delicious meals in Ubud and of a very poor quality!
We luckily had rented a scooter so regularly travelled to Ubud to eat, the breakfast was the same every day for 7 days and not very nice either.
Shame as the village of keliki which we explored was gorgeous but i would not stay at this hotel again.

I normally don't write reviews on hotels, but this time I felt that it was important to let people know that if you choose Alam Sari as the hotel to stay close to Ubud, than you have to be ready to deal with a lot noise coming from the road just a few meters below the hotel. Beforing booking the hotel I read through the reviews and except for one very negative review I had the impression that, yes, there is road nearby but that it was not a busy one and that it only affected the entrance of the hotel. The truth is that the hotel is built right along the road, a few meters above it (which makes it even worse as noise is carried upwards). The road is not a busy one in terms of traffic jams, but you do have one motor bike after the other followed by trucks and cars and because the road goes quite steeply down and then up the noise of the engines is even worse. The reception, restaurant and swimming pool are all open to this road and then the rooms are displayed all around the pool. So while lounging at the pool side instead of listening to the birds all you hear is the roaring of engines. Sometimes the engines get so loud that you don't hear the other person talking at your table! We wanted to be in a hotel outside Ubud to take advantage of Bali's nature, this was definitely a disappointment. The hotel is actually quite nice, but the location just ruins it all. Can you imagine trying to have a nice dinner with engines as your back sound? Or even just reading a book at the pool? Impossible! And just so you know, the roads gets quiet from around 10-11 pm to 5 pm.
One more thing that I would like to say about this hotel is the restaurant. Terrible quality! Simple balinese food should not be too difficult to cook and when you have a hotel that is far from everything, it is easy to end up eating at the hotel quite often. Unfortunately the quality of the food was really bad. The breakfast was also quite sad, not much effort was given to it (I would rate the breakfast as one you would normally serve in a cheap backpacker's hotel). All there is is some pre-toasted bread (always left cold on the buffet table), sliced fruit and mie goreng. Anything else is extra and you have to pay for it.
So in conclusion, if you are looking for a quiet and relaxing place to stay outside Ubud, this is definitely not the place to go to.
