“Dreaming at Darmada”
Reviewed September 2, 2013

After passing the beautiful Bali Padi fields you take a small road in Sidemen to the river and as soon you hear the sound of rushing water you are nearby. There are 2 bungalows with each two rooms and a spacious terrace in the front overlooking the lush vegetation and one in the back adjacent to a small fast running stream. The restaurant, build on the highest point and overlooking the river, serves a small but adequate breakfast and various simple tasteful dishes can be ordered for lunch and dinner. The owners Barbara & Wayan take good care of nature and most of the food produce comes from their own organic garden. When you are in search of the real Bali and are looking for serenity stay a few days here.

I very much enjoyed my experience at Darmada. The grounds have been lovingly designed by their owners and the small details create a stylish & personalised finish, very tasteful and all done with an organic, eco-minded eye. A great feature is the river water pool which is filled with beautiful clean Sideman river water and changed every couple of days, a chlorine free dip which leaves your skin feeling amazing.

The food also was perhaps the best I have tried in Bali and very well priced for the quality, as is the guesthouse.

My favourite part of my stay would have to be however conversing with its beautiful owners, Barbara & Wayan. Wise and kind souls, it is their essence that permeates the place and sets it apart from being just another accommodation. I recommend going just to enjoy their company, but there is much, much more that will delight with your stay in beautiful Darmada in the stunning Sideman region.

bf and i stayed 2 nights here. we should have stayed a couple more!

this place completely refreshed me. like what other reviewers have said before, the place is small and intimate (4 rooms) and has a stream running through the grounds. the concept of eco-friendly permeates in every aspect of darmada. i had seen the swimming pond concept before at a landscape exhibition but this was my first time looking at it in action. the grounds feature a small-to-mid-sized spring-fed swimming pool. the water in the pool is first filtered through 5 reed ponds before flowing into the pond. the grounds also featured organically grown fruits and vegetables and balinese farmers worked on the grounds.

we were well-taken cared of by the staff. they were friendly, attentive and prompt. bf left his slippers at the pool and one of the staff waved after him the next morning when we were up and about to return the slippers (much to the bf's relief as that was his only footwear!!) also when we saw the owner wayan in the restaurant, he would stop and talk to us and share about the hotel and answer our questions about balinese culture.

the rooms were always cleaned, beds always made. they were well ventilated. the shower was very refreshing with an open air concept. because the water was piped from the spring, it didn't have that chlorinated smell that you find elsewhere.

the food at warung melita in darmada was really delicious and healthy! i tried the black rice porride (pulut hitam as we call in singapore). it was not too sweet and spiced with cinnamon. i was also pleasantly surprised by the toast! none of the white bread you get in south-east asia but delicious grain bread. bf says the club sandwich at melita was better than any club sandwich he ever had in europe. but the only thing that was a bit disappointing for us was that we had eaten pretty large portions at the mango tree cafe in pecatu for our previous meals and the portions at warung melita in comparison were much smaller, with the exception of the delectable bebek betutu (duck with balinese spice) we had for dinner one night. that said, we also ventured to one of the posh places atop rice fields for breakfast one morning and found that although it served a buffet, the quantity of food did not match the quality we found at the darmada.

We spent five nights in one of the rooms and enjoyed everything so much: the scenery, the natural swimming pool, the relaxed atmosphere, the kindness of the people, hearing about Barbara and Wayans views on Sidemen and the Island. They also arranged for a nice driver, to pick us up in Ubud and drop us in Amed. Both drives we turned into a day trip, which were very enjoyable. The town - Sidemen - is nearby and worth a stroll, as are the rice paddies surrounding the place.

Our daughter spent as much time as she could playing with the owner's daughter which both enjoyed greatly. We liked it that we could see day to day life in the village, which is relatively unspoiled by tourism go by.

What a find this place is. Beautiful location, pretty gardens, intimate setting. Owners (Barbara and Wayan) are extremely laid back and friendly. Rooms are immaculate and open out onto a stream. If you are looking to get away from the tourist track and chill out for a few days, this is the place. Very economical as well! Food in restaurant was good, not amazing. My only minor complaint would be the transport offered by Wayan was relatively expensive (250K for about a 40 min drive). However, he did tell me it would be about 200-250 so I was forewarned, and I could have shopped around.

After several sweltering days in Ubud, this amazing gem of a place was just what we needed! The area around Sidemen is quiet, and much like the Bali you dreamed of. Darmada is just 4 rooms situated on a river behind some lovely rice fields. You sleep with the sounds of the river comforting you in a lovely large room. No air conditioning because you won't need it. The colors are soothing, the decor is simple but elegant, the bed with a mosquito net is romantic, and the indoor/outdoor bathroom is perfect. The floors are gorgeous hand made tiles from a small factory up the street owned by the same folks who own Darmada.

There is a small and wonderful swimming pool which is fed by the river so it is very natural, and not chlorinated. You can spend days there! We planned for two days and spent six!

The food in the restaurant on the property is quite good and the staff and owners go out of their way to make your stay super wonderful. Rent a scooter and ask for a map of the area, and off you go to explore old Bali where the locals smile and wave as you explore. You won't want to go back to Ubud!

Important: check to see if there is wifi there, and if they accept credit cards. When we went there were neither so we had to pay cash, and there was no easy ATM, and they were looking to get wifi.

I have been travelling to Bali for many years. On of my favorite places to stay is the valley of Sidemen, in the east of Bali. In my last holiday of november 2012 I found here a wonderfull place to stay. It is called Darmada and it is situated at the river which flows through the valley of Sidemen. In a natural setting you will find beautifull bungalows which are painted in bright colours. For a family with children this is a great place to stay because the children have so many space to discover nature (again) which is everywhere. Barbara (dutch) and Wayan (balinese) will give you an unforgetable time in a place where the real Bali is still to be found.
Staying here will be somthing you'll never forget.
