After several sweltering days in Ubud, this amazing gem of a place was just what we needed! The area around Sidemen is quiet, and much like the Bali you dreamed of. Darmada is just 4 rooms situated on a river behind some lovely rice fields. You sleep with the sounds of the river comforting you in a lovely large room. No air conditioning because you won't need it. The colors are soothing, the decor is simple but elegant, the bed with a mosquito net is romantic, and the indoor/outdoor bathroom is perfect. The floors are gorgeous hand made tiles from a small factory up the street owned by the same folks who own Darmada.

There is a small and wonderful swimming pool which is fed by the river so it is very natural, and not chlorinated. You can spend days there! We planned for two days and spent six!

The food in the restaurant on the property is quite good and the staff and owners go out of their way to make your stay super wonderful. Rent a scooter and ask for a map of the area, and off you go to explore old Bali where the locals smile and wave as you explore. You won't want to go back to Ubud!

Important: check to see if there is wifi there, and if they accept credit cards. When we went there were neither so we had to pay cash, and there was no easy ATM, and they were looking to get wifi.

I have been travelling to Bali for many years. On of my favorite places to stay is the valley of Sidemen, in the east of Bali. In my last holiday of november 2012 I found here a wonderfull place to stay. It is called Darmada and it is situated at the river which flows through the valley of Sidemen. In a natural setting you will find beautifull bungalows which are painted in bright colours. For a family with children this is a great place to stay because the children have so many space to discover nature (again) which is everywhere. Barbara (dutch) and Wayan (balinese) will give you an unforgetable time in a place where the real Bali is still to be found.
Staying here will be somthing you'll never forget.

4 weeks of traveling through Java, Bali and Lombok and this was definitely the highlight from our trip. Located in the quiet village of Sidemen, far away from the touristic hubs, Wayan and Barbara have created a paradise on earth. Surrounded by the most beautiful nature we have ever seen, this is the ultimate place to relax and enjoy the real Balinese culture.
The rooms are spotless, nicely designed with good beds and the terraces (…lying in the hammock…) are all located immediately next to the river and rice fields, which increases the all-nature experience. Wayan, the owner, is very willing to help you getting most out-of-your stay and experience Bali as you would like it. For example, he took us to local temples, where the priests let us meet the spiritual side of Bali. The food in the restaurant is just excellent, and the Lemongrass tea with home-made carrot cake we can recommend to everybody.
Not to forget, Wayan and Barbara are having a true vision to take care of the local community in Sidemen e.g. education local kids after school (nice experience to help teaching English) and take all services (laundry, massages, ….) directly from the people in the Sidemen village.
Thank you Wayan and Barbara for an unforgettable experience and we will certainly hope to return to this place….we miss it already!

Darmada is tucked away in the village Sideman, which sits in a gorgeous valley in East Bali. With only 4 rooms it's quite intimate and each opens on freshly tilled rice paddies at the front, and by a small babbling brook at the back.

The rooms are very nice with fantastic floor tile work which come from the owners' tile fabrication company, Sadus, just up the road. The rooms are spacious with unique bathrooms with the sounds of the river and rice paddies throughout the night. The only drawback, and its really not that much of a problem, is that while there are only 4 rooms, they are set up like a duplex so each room shares a wall with another. But again, this wasn't much of an issue. The layout is quite relaxing, with the river on one side and creeks running through, one right into the pool and gardens all around.

The resort has a lovely restaurant with excellent Balinese dishes with fruits, veggies and meats all locally sourced.

Great spot! Stay a while !

:)

We came to Sideman expecting a relaxing break away from the hustle of southern Bali - and boy did we get it.

I can't recommend Darmada enough.

Currently, there are only 4 rooms in this B&B which make is perfect for the more quiet 'get away'.

The rooms are equipped with a large bed and mosquito net, a front and rear porch both with chairs, lounging sofa and table, but the rear porch also boasts a little hammock - perfect for reading.

Even some of the best hotels I have stayed at in Bali, have all had a little maintenance that needed doing, but the rooms here were clean and in top quality condition. Amazing.

If you are skittish about insects (what are you doing in Bali for one) this might not be the place for you. The rooms are cool from their open layout which does mean some insects can come and hang out with you, but it is really not a problem when you are under your mosquito net at night.

Also, worth noting, the time we stayed (October 2012) we did not get bitten by mosquito once.

We currently live in Sanur in a closed house with mosquito netting and still get bitten, it seems even though it is right on a river, the mozzies aren't there! Great. :)

The front areas of all the houses back onto a rice field or the garden and the back areas have a rushing creak.

The B&B also has a warung on site, Its quite a walk into Sideman town, but with food this good near by - why would you!

The food is lovely and although, as some people have pointed out, it comes a little slow, you can't really expect speedy service when catering for so few people and it is clearly cooked from scratch. Personally, I no problem waiting a while, relaxing, having a drink and then enjoying a freshly cooked meal.

The setting of the Warung is also something to be enjoyed, nestled around mountain and river views, you can relax on the comfy laid back seating, framed only by long white curtains.

Also in the warung, there are books and magazines you can read, as well as games for small people and...not so small people. My boyfriend and I had a game of Rummikub with some drinks one afternoon.

Wayan, the owner, will make himself known to you, he will tell you anything you need to know and help in any way he can. If you want to see or do something, he will arrange a friendly local tour guide to help you.

Living in Bali for the past 6 months, I have stayed in a wide variety of lush hotels and little homestays, I can honestly say this was my favorite place and I can't wait to go back again! :-)

Room Tip: We stayed in the Laksmi room - its great because you can watch the Rice Paddy workers and it's p...

Lovely hotel, fresh and very nice rooms with great colors and interior. Some of the rooms have a terrace on the riverside. Owners are very nice and it is in a beautiful, peaceful location. They also have a factory which makes great tiles. You can swim in the river, or in the swimming pool.
Restaurant looks lovely and have good food and cake. Also very good tea that they mix themselves.

My Mum and I have just visited Darmada and stayed for 6 nights. Not long enough! If you're looking for the real Bali then this is definitely the place to be. Quiet, and well away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist saturated areas of Ubud and surrounding areas. Set in stunning landscape with river and rice paddies. The staff are wonderful and the owners Wayan and Barbara are very hospitable and a wealth of information. My Mum suffers from psoriasis and Wayan went to such trouble to source homeopathic remedies to treat - with remarkable results. Barbara's home made jams and breads are wonderful and we didn't bother sourcing any meals from anywhere else as so good. Lovely walks too - easy or hard going. Take your pick. If fatigue takes hold, flag someone down (as my Mum did) on a moped and hitch-hike! Must see local market - set out early for a feast on the eyes. Pick up local produce for very little money. Mangoes,bananas,peanuts...Wonderful rooms - we took 2 in the blue house and loved. Frogs and geckoes frequent visitors. If I had to find a negative it would only be the lighting to read at night - bedside lamps very low voltage. I'm definitely returning to Darmada - just haven't worked out what to do with my 2 kids - not the place for them! This is a retreat. Not an activity filled resort. Loved every moment. Try the sate, spring rolls and lilit from the menu. Delicious. Food is wholesome and grown on site. We took tomatoe seeds - hope to return to sample soon. Thank you Wayan & Barbara for a truly wonderful time.

Room Tip: Blue house - lovely tiles which come from the family's own tile factory.
