“Good value budget option”
Reviewed November 5, 2011

Pemuteran beachfront hotels can be rather expensive, this is a good budget option, not directly on the beach, but a 10 minute walk down a track across some rather overgrown land to the beach. The room was clean, quiet and the owners friendly. There was also free internet in the restaurant (other hotels in Pemuteran charge crazy prices for internet access). The downside compared to other hotels is the lack of a swimming pool.

Being the only bar showing the rugby semifinal New Zealand vs Australia the owner of the bar claimed afterwards that we had almost twice the stuff the we actually ordered. If I would drink ten beer as he claimed I would have crawled home and not remember quite clear the argument we had with him. After he started shouting very angry at us we paid and left the bar. He shouted after us that we never ever should come back. What a lovely man ... avoid this bar if you can ...

We found Badini Homestay through a recommendation of a local guesthouse and once we got there we were utterly surprised to find this little gem. They are situated in Pemuteran along the main road that goes from Gilimanuk towards Lovina, where also most of the resorts and dive shops are. Kokak Dive Centre is next door (managed by the same owner of Badini) and there is a supermarket just opposite the homestay. Also chemist (pharmacy), fruit stall, hairdresser/beauty salon, etc are just few steps away.

Unfortunately it's not easy to find their contact details online so I thought I'll add them here.

We stayed in one of the 4 brand-new "luxury" units with double or twin bed, all with A/C, a nice patio overlooking the garden and a stunning outdoor "balinese-style" bathroom (obviously with hot water). I've funnily noticed that they had the same toilet as the Marina Bay Sands, the 5 star hotel in Singapore. These rooms are at the back of the property, away from the noise of the main road. At the time we paid Rp. 300.000/day and we thought it was really good value for the quality of the room. There are also bedrooms with fan and cold water available for those on a tighter budget, we didn't stay there so I won't be able to comment on these rooms, as far as I remember they were Rp. 150.000/day. Sometime soon there should also be a family unit available near the A/C rooms. They were finishing building it at the time we were there.

The homestay provides bath towels, soap and crisp clean bedsheets. The bed is firm and comfortable, the room is spotless and the housekeeping faultless. Rooms have no TV but you'll hardly miss it since you'll probably be busy discovering the area (snorkeling, diving, trekking, etc). Free wireless internet is available in the homestay, the signal is best at the front of the property by the bar and restaurant.

Breakfast is included in the price and the options are all delicious. You can have pineapple or banana pancake, egg on toast, toast with jam or bacon and egg and they all include a fresh fruit juice and tea or coffee. The warung (restaurant) is one of the best in town so you won't have to go far for a nice meal. We noticed quite a few people from the resorts nearby coming for lunch and dinner which made us pleased about our choice of accommodation. The menu is quite extensive, we ate there every evening and really enjoyed all the dishes we tried.

The staff was attentive and always very happy to please. In our case, we have some drinks we bought before arriving and they happily kept them in their fridge throughout the duration of our stay. And, as if that wasn't enough, they allowed us to drink them at the restaurant with the meals.

While staying in Badini we also organised two dives in Menjangan Island with Kadek from Kokak Dive right next door. They offered us a discount as guests of Badini which we were very pleased about. We had a wonderful time diving with them, we were the only two people going out with the instructor and we felt very well looked after.

We spent two nights there and by the end of our stay we really felt part of the family. It was nice to experience this after staying in the busy area of Seminyak where you just felt like another tourist. On leaving we felt very sad to go, the guys at the bar were all busy getting the decorations ready for Galungan (a Balinese holiday). We were happily chatting away all morning with them while waiting for the transportation they kindly organised for us. We spent some time talking with Joseph (the manager or owner), he was always eager to make sure his guests were having a good time and happy to help with anything. We would definitely recommend staying here.
