Bali Jiwa Villa
Reviewed August 9, 2013

We had a wonderful 4 night stay at Villa Jiwa in July 2013. First of all, it seems much has been written about the remote location. For us, the remoteness of the villa made our stay! It was great not to see any other tourists in the direct area, especially now that Ubud seems to be overcrowded with tourists, both in the city centre and on the roads to and from Ubud. It is true there's not much, if anything at all, in the direct vicinity in terms of restaurants. The hotel transfer charge to/and from Ubud at $10 one way is actually a realistic price, and not overcharging. We had the same price quoted by two different local drivers. The airport transfer at $50 is a bit too much, we paid $25 to get there. So getting into Ubud is a bit of a hassle both in terms of traveling time and costs (if you just want to have dinner in Ubud, $20 is relatively expensive compared to the price of an average dinner). We made the right decision to rent a motor bike. Yes, you have to be a bit adventurous but you get total freedom in return. Suddenly the villa's remote location was perfectly fine for us and driving the motorbike at night, through the rice paddies and under the stars was quite a sensation. On top of that, the motorbike is actually faster than a car and only $5 a day. But most important to us was that we could go anywhere anytime, which otherwise would always depend on the availability of a driver.

We had dinner at the Villa once, which was perfectly fine but to have dinner there every night would become rather boring. The private pool is of a very decent size, not just a plunge pool. Then the service, amazing and always with a smile! We felt very welcome and at home.

Three very minor points for improvement would be:
1) The wifi signal in the villa itself was very, very weak. You don't really need internet in this amazing surrounding but sometimes to look things up it's conventient. Wifi signal was fine in the salon though.
2)The dirt road to the villa is very rock-y. Not great for the motorbike and even our drivers were a little bit hesitant about entering the road.
3) Breakfast was wonderful, perhaps except for the quality of the bread, which was a bit cardboard like. I can however imagine getting decent bread in this remoteness is not easy.

All in all, we can not recommend this Bali Jiwa enough! Its remote location might not be working for everyone but it was just what we were looking for, especially with the mobility and flexibility the motorbike provides us. And compared to some of the luxury hotels in and around Ubud, excellent value for money, too.

Spent 4 days & nights at Bali Jiwa Villa during an 8 day trip to Bali in July 2013. Located in Payangan, Kelusa village to the north of Ubud proper (30-45 mins ride). Took a while to get there but the trip was so worth it. One of the most secluded locations I have ever seen, right on the rice paddy fields and overlooking a dense thicket of trees and mountain views on clear days make for an idyllic setting. The rooms are excellent with a private pool (very useable) and a living area which is a perfect place to hang-out and for meals. Even though it is secluded, most drivers and tour guides will pick you up from your villa which means you can still manage all your travel and other activities in Bali (add 45 mins travel time to all advertised travel time from Ubud). And the staff are absolutely fantastic - Desak and Koma are always available and go above and beyond to make you comfortable and looked after. They really do take the meaning of "traditional Balinese hospitality" to a whole new level.
A few quick tips:
1) There are only 2 private pool villas so be sure to make a reservation early.
2) Have the number of the place handy. Most drivers coming from Ubud will need to call them at least twice to figure out how to get there.
3) After the right turn in to the village area from the main road which takes you to Ubud, try and remember the way to the villa so you can guide the taxi drivers.
4) Food is ok, functional but not great so plan on having most of your meals out

All-in-all, Bali Jiwa Villa is a wonderful place and the perfect setting for a Bali holiday. You will find yourself looking forward to coming back to a sanctuary of absolute quiet and relaxation and is the perfect place to unwind and re-charge. I had withdrawal symptoms for the first few days after leaving the place!

The villa is great the employed staff wonderful Balinese people. The owners unfortunately have it set up to make more money which detracts from the experience. Ubud is 30min drive and you have to use the owner to drive you $25 or pay for a 3 course meal $50 a couple. For bali $50 is very expensive for a bland European style chicken soup or rice dish (something I would cook for my kids on a Friday night). If they offered traditional Balinese food with beautiful fresh whole foods (the county is ladened with ginger basil mint garlic lemongrass chillies & vanilla pods dripping from vines everywhere) it may have been ok but was annoying to be forced to pay $50 for zucchini soup and chicken rice with little flavour. I can understand they are trying to accommodate a majority but the cost didn't equate. Two men where in the adjacent villa and we could here them talking. The villa is luxurious and our massage was the best one out of a dozen treatments. The guest book is a testament to the staff employed who are delightful.

We thank you for your review and kind words about the team at Bali Jiwa Villa. We are glad to read that you liked your private pool villa and the massages. However, we are sorry that we have not entirely met your expectations.

1) We have offered you the "honeymoon package" although you were not on honeymoon. The "honeymoon package" includes 1 free airport pickup, 1 free dinner for two persons and 1 free massage for two persons. We are surprised to read that "the owners unfortunately have it set up to make more money". If that would be the case, we would not have offered the "honeymoon package" although you were not on honeymoon. It was with pleasure to make an exception because we were told it would be your birthday while staying with us.

2) It may take 30 minutes to go to Ubud, but only if traffic is very bad. Otherwise it takes around 15 minutes. Please be reminded that the price for a transfer to Ubud is not USD 25, but USD 10 (i.e. USD 20 for an Ubud return transfer). Our guests don't have to take "the owner's car" (we don't have a car). We cooperate with drivers from the village. As you may have noticed, Bali Jiwa Villa belongs to a small village where the main source of income is agriculturally based. It is our aim to help these neighbouring families by giving them the opportunity to transport guests.

3) We understand that you did not appreciate our dinners. They are very popular, but taste is entirely subjective. However, we thank you for your constructive feedback regarding additional flavours which we have already discussed with our chef. You will find that our 3 course set menus for USD 25 per person (including 21% service charge and tax), being served by a personal waiter in the ambience of your very own private pool villa, are competitively priced in comparison to similar luxury establishments in the area.

4) We are sorry to hear that you were disturbed by guests talking in our 2nd villa. Our two private pool villas are well apart and we have never faced any privacy issues so far.

These 2 villas are heaven on earth..... After thinking we would never find the villas we arrived and found true paradise. The villas are magnificent and views are to die for. Staff truly wonderful and nothing too much trouble. I think the seclusion, views and staff are what make this place so wonderful. I would recommend that you bring a few supplies with you as there are no shops close by. We had the 3 course dinner from the hotel which was lovely. Breakfast also terrific. Cannot speak highly enough of this beautiful place.

Room Tip: Take supplies as at this stage the villas don't offer snacks or lunch, but hopefully they will i...

These 2 secluded Villas are a 20 - 30 minute drive north of Ubud. Our driver stopped to ask for directions about 5 times as it seemed like we were never going to get there.

The villa will arrange a driver on half hours notice. The cost at the time of our stay was 200,000 RP for the return trip. Arrange for a pickup time when you are dropped off.

Breakfast is included & substantial. We arranged a 3 course meal for our first night which is as advertised USD 25 per person. Home cooked on the premises & very tasty. Unless you are planning to be in Ubud during the day - bring food supplies for lunch & snacks! There is nothing around. This villa is in the middle of rice paddy's and remote!

Because there was a royal cremation ceremony in Ubud today and consequently huge traffic jams, we decided to avoid a trip there. This meant scrounging some lunch from our packets of chips, nuts & fruit. We hastily arranged another cooked 2 course meal for tonight. They need some warning for this but happy to accommodate

The Villas are superb & the view is stunning. The serenity is worth being out of town!

I was invited to join a good friend of mine at Jiwa Villa at a moments notice and was speechless upon arrival. The warm, humble staff, the serene setting amongst the rice patties, and the sense of solitude complimented by the well appointed accommodations were the perfect recipe for the months that had preceded my arrival.
We would spend a week here and as a result, would recommend this gem to anyone seeking to be pampered by the best.
