“Quiet but very tired”
Reviewed July 13, 2013

Ok so this resort/hotel is miles from the airport in a very quiet part of Bali but the journey aside, the peace and quiet was wonderful. The driving in Bali is shocking and scary no matter where you go and as there is really only one road to get you there, which is full of lorries heading to the port for trips to java it can be slow going.

Our accommodation could best be described as old and tired and a bit like a coffin, although there was plenty of space, and two bathrooms plus fans and air conditioning it was very old and damp. I grabbed the extra pillow out of the wardrobe to use but it was so musty I found it unusable; I guess it's common somewhere humid. I found it impossibly dark in our villa and the lighting inadequate. The roofing had a couple of visible holes in but even with heavy rain no water found its way inside. However our front patio was a completely different scenario, it leaked badly including right outside the door and even the area where the roof appeared to be in better condition the creaking noises distinctly sounded like it was about to fall on our head at any given moment. Our room was attended too each day, beds made etc but the floors weren't swept and we eventually had sand everywhere by the end of the week. There was no facilities made for sweeping ourselves in the villa. Our friends had an obviously much newer villa which was much nicer than ours, light and airy compared to our dungeon; air conditioning in both rooms and a much nicer kitchen area.

The menu at the resort is somewhat limited and I believe it to be overpriced; whilst there was nothing wrong with it and the food is actually nice there was nothing great. Due to its remoteness be prepared for them running out of things but this added to the charm. Feel free to ask for any changes to your dish, they are more than happy to accommodate you.

Pool area is nice but there is not enough sun loungers and there's definitely no jacuzzi. The bar area leaks badly when it rains as the roof is in a very bad state of repair.

Despite what appears to be a negative sounding review, we would definitely return to this charming little place. The Manager Alex and all the staff, particular mention to Novi will do anything for you, they are charming, polite and always have a smile and conversation with you. If you want to eat at any of the local hotels/restaurants ask reception to book and the other hotel will send transport for you.

Let me preface this by saying I have worked in hospitality ALL my life in many positions...doing nearly ALL of the positions in a hotel...

It may look close enough on a map...but..it was very late when we arrived, after nearly a 3hr trip from the airport late at night. NOT a trip for the fainthearted, the road is like Bali's main highway, very congested and dangerous at any time of day.
The villa looked nice and new but overall it was dirty and did not seem set up to recieve guests. There were no towels for a shower and the last guests soap and shampoo were still in the shower tray.
The large marks on the floor were thought to be a stain of fome sort... but me, having been a hotel housekeeper gave 1 or 2 a little scrub and guess what ??...they came off...having the villa's 'ceiling/roof' open to the outdoors is quite pleasant/tropical looking too but the ghecko poop on the floors is a bit much !!! The kettle took forever to boil, even a small amt of water and proper tea couldn't be found 1 morning...they were out of that too...

I don't think a mop actually had touched the floor for quite some time in the living area's.I was amused too that the room staff were in fact "training" school children to do this most important job...in a most insuffcient way...is perpertrating the problem...

Luckily I am not a big drinker or the fact that the bar ran out of some spirits for coctails would have been a major concern, as it was 2 nights in a row, we ordered certain meals for dinner and that was not available either.

My friend cut her toe on a dangerous edge of the pool/bar area and the blood spilt as a result
was still there after a week...NOT good hygiene either in that respect.

The grounds need mowing and a darn good tidy up.

There was traditional dancing that aws on 1 night, went for WAY too long, then the Managers had some of their staff do a "village people" dance as they areemployed from the local village...they all looked so embarrassed...and I was for them...

The staff themselves were absolutely magic...if not a touch slow...but ALWAYS friendly...

The TOURS...what a rip off...do no book any through the Hotel...do them yourselves with a driver...
We had 2 tours booked, the 1st was to Lovina, through a tree that could be 'driven through', but we weren't told how or why it had gotten that way...then we were taken to the Thermal Springs and royally ripped off...the driver told not to touch or look at any shopkeepers except his 'friends'...who then charged us nearly $120 for 3 towels and 2 tops...not being familiar with the currency, it wasn't til later we realized...

We were concerned when the next days tour was alo to be taken by the same driver...The Magical Mystery Tour is to be avoided at all costs...got taken to some War Memorial, where WE had to ask WHAT is was...he took off to the loo but didn't tell us where they were...back on the bus to Sanur only to be dumped at theThe Carvern Bar for an hr and a half of boredom...when lunch arrived, it was cold...back on the bus to a whole 30mins at Tanah Lot...still no directions to a loo or a chance to have a look around at the stalls...ALL up...I would like my money back for both !!!..
I was asked for my opinion upon our return and tzold the Managers they would most certainly get it !!!...
I will be sending a copy of this to them as well, requesting a refund if not an apology...My friends had bought a 'voucher' for this Hotel BUT were NOT told it could be used at other properties closer to Kuta...MOST ANNOYED ABOUT THAT...

All up...if you want to totally get away from EVERYTHING...stay here...otherwise...DON'T...

Room Tip: stay elsewhere.

Loved the place, very quite but far away from anywhere. Floor never got mopped in our villa, dirty even when we arrived and i cut my toe in the dining area and blood was still there after we checked out after a week. Loved the food and people, but one tour called the magical mystery was not worth the money or time and the driver we had (who run the mini bus) was untrustworthy he told us not to buy from anyone but his friends and if we touched a item we had to buy it and his friends shop was very expensive.

Room Tip: hibiscus villas as they are new.

My husband, sister, her husband and I spent a week at Medewi Bay Retreat. We had a wonderful relaxing holiday which was what we wanted. We spent our days reading, doing crosswords, playing cards and having a few drinks in the evening.
Alex and his staff made us very welcome and nothing was too much trouble for them. Our rooms were cleaned to a high standard daily and our bed was so comfortable we slept soundly every night.
Everywhere was spotless at the resort, beautiful setting and gardens, fabulous sparkling pool.
What lovely people the Balinese are, always so polite, they love to have fun and teased us which we enjoyed.
There was a good choice of food on the menu, Western, Indonesian, Balinese and Indian, something for everyone.
We hired a car and driver one afternoon to go into Negara to do some shopping, at $10 an hour it was good value.
Thank you Alex and your staff for a great holiday.

Fantastic pool and surroundings; staff extremely helpful and friendly. A beautiful setting, if a little remote but hire cars or motor bikes reasonably priced. Needs a lot of maintenance, e.g. thatched roofs falling apart, broken steps, pool tiles loose or missing, white ants in the woodwork. We had problems with our fridge, toaster and aircond but all were quickly replaced or repaired. Although it had a TV, there were NO English channels at all and no DVD player provided although some guests did have them. The room was supposed to be fully serviced, but the towels were never changed during our 7 night stay and they ran out of pool towels. Restaurant was comparatively expensive especially with the Govt tax of 15%, food average ... luckily there is a lovely little local store just at the end of the drive, (eggs 10cents each!) We had a great time there and would recommend it - a good way to experience the beautiful countryside and local people.

Room Tip: There are old and new rooms; presumably the newer ones don't have the white ants and the old ele...

The resort is a collection of cottages surrounding a beautiful swimming pool. The rooms are fairly large. The food is good. Limited options in terms of Indian food but whatever was served was good. The resort had arranged a traditional dance performance on one of the days that we were there. Travel arrangements made for tours were adequate.

When we booked the resort, we had been given the indication that some renovation work was in progress there. So some of the points that I mention below may not be relevant over time
- There are no phones in the rooms. So in effect no room service
- Though we booked a 2 bed room cottage, the a/c was present in only one of the bedrooms.

The travel time from this resort to the attractions of Central and South Bali are high. Can be 2-3 hours one way.

We enjoyed our week here but found it a little isolated from both city and village life. Our previous week was in a resort adjacent to a village with families, bustling activity and friendly food stalls etc and right on the seaside so we found this new resort a little isolated from contact with the locals, a reasonable walk from the sea and not as easy to travel into the nearest big town. The actual resort itself was very pleasant with a lovely pool, fine meals and good theme dinners. There were still some beautiful places to visit, particularly places of historical interest and the fact that it is not as geared to tourists has both positive and negative points. Generally we did not feel as welcome or at ease as in the Candidasa area but other resort guests who were into surfing were rapt with the location.
