Owner description: President Harry S Truman took America from its traditional isolationism into the age of international involvement. Despite his power, he never forgot where he came from. Today, visitors can experience the surroundings Truman knew as a young man of modest ambition through his political career and final years as a former president.

A wonderful glimpse into the lives of the Truman Family. A charming Victorian house that feels more like a home.

“Good stop - historic home”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

We liked this tour by the park rangers because of its historical significance. I am guessing the tour could be excellent or poor base don the tour guide. Would not recommend for younger children.

“Awesome”
Reviewed July 26, 2013 via mobile

We loved this tour and the park ranger was so knowledgeable. To those who criticize having to stay on the carpet, my gosh, how long do you think this beautiful historic home would last if you were allowed to run a muck through it? If you appreciate history as we do, then you will love this tour and have no issue with the minor courtesies that you are asked to observe. The park is closed on Mondays due to our current President mandating furlough time for the parks department which I think is a real travesty considering a family on vacation during the summer shouldn't have to make a special trip back because a park they want their children to see is closed. Fellow park junkies need to speak up on this and suggest the president take a few days furlough (unpaid vacation will work since he seems to take a lot of it) and keep the parks open!

“Wonderful look at former President's home & lifestyle”
Reviewed July 25, 2013

This home is wonderfully preserved just as it was when Harry and Bess Truman lived here. It's their kitchen table and chairs (very informal, much like my mom and dad had in the 60s) and all the furnishings in the house are as they were when the Trumans lived here. The tour guide was very friendly and informative. Our kids (12 and 15) were politely interested as well, especially with the story of how the kids shot a bb gun and put holes in the same parlor where Presidents visited (but at different times!) Beware: there are no restroom facilities here!

“Glad we visited but also disappointing”
Reviewed July 16, 2013

The movie that we saw on the president's life was informative. It's included in the price of the tour of the home, and it's shown where you purchase tickets for the tour. It's about a 10 minute walk away from the home, although you could drive to the home if needed. Don't be late for your tour time. They like to start their tours at the home promptly. Truman's home was in the condition that it was in 1982. Even President Truman and his wife's coats were still on their hooks, and one can get very close to them. An alarm will sound, though, if you get too close to things. The tour only cost $4, and it was worth seeing, but I was a little disappointed in that the tour was only 20 minutes long. You could only tour the 1st floor as well. You couldn't go upstairs or tour the grounds just outside the home. I would have been interested in seeing much more.
