The courthouse was under repair when we visited, and aside from the marshals house and jail we felt there was little to do or see. It felt like a small town centre that had gone to seed. If you are interested you will want to visit but otherwise you may be disappointed.

You feel like you are stepping back in time but there are so many fun shops to visit and outstanding restaurants that it won't disappoint.

The buildings and churches were beautiful. An old Victorian downtown with lots to do. Great shopping and yummy food.

Honestly, I had heard some negative things about Independence, but after visiting this small downtown square, I see that it is a very charming area. There's lots of history and interesting architecture, and a good area for walking. The shops are unique and it's easy to spend a lot of time going through each one. The surrounding neighborhoods are great for viewing as well, and include Harry S. Truman's home.
