We recently toured the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum and it was a very interesting and enlightening experience. He is becoming a forgotten president to some extent and the Museum serves as a good reminder regarding some of the very tough decisions he had to make, both popular and unpopular.

The Museum is full of artifacts and memoribilia that help bring the Truman Administration to life and is well worth a visit of several hours. There are at least three movies that also give a good insight into the period of his administration.

The orientation movie was excellent. As I was heading into the museum a free guided tour was just starting. I tagged along most of the way but the information the volunteer was providing was essentially what was in the movie so I eventually when on my own. The temporary exhibit about Thomas Hart Benson was excellent.

We spent a couple of hours here as we like to visit Presidential museums when we are in the area. There are wandering guards here because there are some original artworks and some open displays, but they are not intrusive. The museum covers President Truman's life from mostly his teenage years through and after his presidency. It has sections devoted to his life long love affair with his wife and daughter and others to his presidency and history of the times. Since he was alive when it was built and opened what you see here had his complete approval. There is a story in the museum that he used to come here to work in the office he had here. When he was here earlier than the staff he was known to answer the phone and give directions to people who wanted to visit. Unlike a lot of presidential museums that are put together after the president dies, this one was put together by the person themselves so what you see is their interpretation. There is an exact representation of his oval office when he was in the white house also which was most interesting.

Definitely worth the trip. Very interesting and beautiful library. The staff was very helpful. We were given student discounts which helped defray costs with three teenagers

The nation's first presidential library and museum is well organized, beautifully designed and full of artifacts. From President and Mrs. Truman's resting places, the educational films, the Oval Office to clothing and car exhibits, this museum is a must to see. We visit a couple times a year to see the special exhibits.
