Although my wife has posted a review about our stay during our honeymoon earlier in July, I simply felt compelled to post another from my perspective (and re-iterating some of the things she said)!
First of all, I must confess that although I am an avid user of Trip Advisor, I have never actually submitted a review before or felt compelled to do so until now. I have travelled quite extensively (across some 50 countries) but can honestly say that Amankila is my most favourite place in the world. If there is a paradise on earth, then this is it!
I surprised my wife on honeymoon by taking her there and had e-mailed the hotel beforehand to inform them that it would be a surprise and not let it slip. To my absolute delight, the driver (Wayan) was completely aware and actually played along telling her that we were going to a hotel in Nusa Dua and asking if we wanted to stop off at Amankila just to see it as it was on the way - to which we both agreed. The drive up to Amankila is very picturesque and absolutely breathtaking when you go up the cliff and you can suddenly see the sea! As soon as we reached the hotel and saw the iconic three tier infinity pool overlooking the sea, she turned to me to say that we should one day stay at a place like that to which I replied how about now - the look on her face turned from complete surprise to disbelief to joy and it was priceless!
Tracey (the General Manager) was on hand to personally meet us and from the moment we were picked up to the moment we were dropped off, the staff were absolutely fantastic - having read the other reviews, I had an idea of what to expect but even then was completely taken back by the attention to detail that each staff had and how everything worked like clockwork and in the background. It is hard to really explain this but as an example (and one of my favourite bits of the stay) as soon as the staff see you approaching a bale, they would come and prepare (laying out several comfortable towels) and bottles of complimentary sun lotion and ice cold water would materialise. There were always staff at hand should you require anything (even anticipating your needs at times) but they were never intrusive. And it was quite incomprehensible how each staff would know your name and the room you were staying in!
Apart from the service, the food itself was exquisite - Guy, the head chef, was simply superb with his vast culinary knowledge and created a special menu for us on our last night which was really one of the best meals we have had (especially given that we are vegetarians). We decided to have this meal in our suite and the staff went out of their way to decorate the place and make it very romantic for us - there were candles everywhere and they setup a table outside for us with our own private waiter for the evening. It was a night that neither one of us will ever forget.
The hotel's location is spectacular and the view is breath taking (every time we drove back from an activity, it never failed to literally make us gasp!). Although some people have mentioned that the sand is black and found that to be concerning, I actually found it quite unique and it added to the entire experience. Either way, it is extremely soft and the privacy of the bales guarantee to make you feel as though you have the beach all to yourself! The tiered infinity pool again is quite unique (although can imagine it would have been even more so when Amankila was first built) and the architecture of the entire place is simply stunning. All the suites feel extremely private and none look into the other.
I have tried to think of any little wants or concerns that we might have had and can honestly say that there were none!
All in all, the fantastic staff, superb food and spectacular location all made our dream honeymoon destination become a reality and it really surpassed even my highest expectations. We certainly look forward to maybe one day visiting the place again and would really like to sincerely thank Tracey and her wonderful staff for making it an unforgettable honeymoon and experience for us.
