“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2008

Just returned from 10 days in Bali and spent 4 nights at the Alila in Candidasa. From the minute you arrive, it is evident that service is first and foremost for the staff. Rather than standing at a reception desk they come to greet you, sit you down in the beautiful open air lobby, give you a wonderful refreshing drink ,and bring the paperwork to you!

The rooms have all of the amenties that most travellers need or have come to expect in a resort - mini bar, robe, slippers, hair dryer (and ladies what a hair dryer-not a cheapie but a first class salon style dryer), turn down service with flowers and cookies on your pillow. Coffee, tea and water are free of charge.

The rooms have shampoo, conditioner, bath wash and moisturizer. But since Alila is a 'green' hotel there is no plastic for them. Each day those items are refilled in lovely ceramic jars.

The morning breakfast which was included in the cost was not just a roll and coffee. But instead included an incredible plate of fresh local fruit, glasses of fresh fruit juice, a basket of wonderful croissants and rolls, coffee/tea, and then your choice of an 'entre'. The servings on the entre were so large they filled you up the whole day. You could choose from western type selections (eggs, omelets, granola, etc.) or local Bali stye dishes such as Rice Cereal (incredible) or Nasi goreng (another rice dish served all day long).

The hotel also offers many daily activities - some are free and others do have a cost. Especially nice if you are out by the pool is the 'free' mini massage (a tease for the spa) and the afternoon tea and balinese pastries.

Loved Bali and when I return I will be staying at the Alila again.

So, I believe that most people will love it. I stayed at the Alila at Ubud as well but the service and food at Manggis is superior.

Take your loved ones here for a holiday, they will thank you for it.

Do not miss a meal at the Sea Salt (one of bali's best restarants), it can be expensive but don't be stingy. You can have cheaper meals at the nearby town of Candidasa (go to Vincent's or Fajar Candidasa or Puri Pandan) but the Sea Salt is a must try.

Remember to book your spa sessions early, and ask for the seaside bales.

We also enjoyed tea at their Organic Garden. I won't spoil the fun but trust me, it is well worth it....(here's a teaser: tea and snacks in a garden, next to padi fields with views of the sea)

Also, the pool can be swarmed with sun lovers and can get icky with suntan oil but other than that, i usually just lounge on my day bed on my balcony and watch the world go by.

As the property is next to the sea, don't book here if you feel seasick hearing the crashing waves. If you like the sound of the sea, go for it.

Great for honeymoons and family getaways. I am a regular, you will be too.

Three day at Alila Manggis and I thought: "why we didn't book 30 days here?"
This is a warm, stylish, relaxing hotel, with a great restaurant (modern Balinese cooking), a nice pool, wonderful atmosphere. The spa is ok, but not above average.
The rooms on the lower floor are in front of pool, so there is no privacy; chose the rooms on first floor.

Alila Manggis was an excellent experience in Bali. If you want to stay away from the crowd in a relaxing, quite place and if you like good food... this is the place in Bali.

Set in an amazing garden, the resosrt has comfortable rooms (not so big but ok) well equipped and stylish (the resort was designed by a famous architect and is a mix of contemporary style and balinese tradition). Book a room on the first floor with balcony. The rooms on the garden floor may lack in privacy.
Even though it is a seaside resort, the beach doesnt't exist but you can sunbath in the beautiful garden and swim in the great pool.

Staff helpful and warm but never intrusive, complimentary wifi internet in the property.

Seasalt restaurant is excellent. I read reviews complaining about the prices. Ok do not expect to spend as if you were in a warung along the street but the quality, style and fantasy in the dishes is top end level.

Activities and cooking school available. Try also the good spa for incredible balinese massages. Do not miss a trip to Tenganan (only a few minutes drive from Alila).

I spent three beautiful days here, excellent place, a piece of paradise in Bali.

Picture this...it's the first day of your honeymoon, you have just travelled 20+ hours and have arrived to check in to your hotel. You hand over the booking voucher, which has a confirmation for 5 nights, only to be told that your room will only be available for 2 nights.

The initial message from the hotel was that there was no confirmation sent, and no record of the booking. When I pointed out that I had all booking numbers (sent to our travel agent by the hotel!) and confirmation receipts, one of the members of staff let slip that they had a wedding party in the next day. This was something the hotel obviously knew about, and could have told us months before. This could have allowed us to amend our plans with ease. Unfortunately, because they decided to stick their heads in the sand and hope for the best, we had to change our holiday plans at the last minute, and quite frankly I was disgusted.

I think a hotel which manages to reduce a newlywed bride to tears on her first night of honeymoon deserves to be named and shamed.

If you decide to go to Alila be aware of these things:

The rooms are small and not very private.
The beach is black volcanic rock.
The food is pretty good, but overpriced as you are a bit of a captive audience.
The management will become mysteriously scarce if there is a problem, leaving unfortunate local employees to cope.

Bali is a wonderful country. We visited the Chedi Club, and Four Seasons. Both are absolutely fantastic (especially Chedi). So please dont be too put off!

Had a great stay at this hotel. Got upgraded to a suite, plenty of space, balconies all around with daybeds and even two sunchairs.
Everybody is friendly and makes you feel very welcome. Breakfast is a la carte with a good choice, something for everbody's taste.
Free shutttleservice a couple of times a day to nearby Candi Dasa with a decent choice of restaurants. Shuttle also runs around dinner time (returning at 9 pm) so that you are not commited to the hotel restaurant.
We undertook two activities organized by the hotel; first the introductory cooking class. Sous-chef Dewa took us to the early morning market in Klunklung, explaining all the different products available. Returning at the hotel a detailed explanation of spices and produce used in the Balinese kitchen. Thereafter the actual cooking, we spent about 1,5 hours cooking a traditional Balinese rijsttafel and at the conclusion eating our meal, delicious ! We got to keep the recipes and in the evening we found two cookingaprons on our bed !
Also did a short 2 hour hike through the ricefields with a very knowledgeable hotelguide.
All in all a wonderful stay in the real Bali. Excellent choice if you are looking for something different away from the mainstream hotelchains !

Spend the first week of our holiday at Alila Manggis, beautiful location, excellent service and friendly staff. I could not fault the cleanliness either. The turndown service always a treat to find a surprise being left at the end of the bed. This was our 25th Wedding Anniversary celebration and we could not have asked for anything better. Candle lit dinner in the Bale by the sea with our own waiter was just perfect.

Well priced and presented food, A very high standard, breakfast is out of this world.

If you want a peaceful location in a beautiful setting by the sea where you can truly relax then this will be for you.
