“Must stay in Bali”
Reviewed April 30, 2012

After the hussle and bustle of the Kuta region, we were a bit nervous about heading to quiet Candidasa. However, the service and friendliness of the Alila Manggis staff exceeded all expectations. The deluxe rooms are worth the small additional expense. The food was sensational and the surroundings so relaxing with great views. You get the feel of the real Bali in a 1st class location. But the highlight is the staff. Nothing was too much trouble and the efforts they went to for our Renewal of Vows ceremony was fantastic. Treat yourselves to a wonderful relaxing experience in a beautiful part of the world and see the Real Bali

Room Tip: For the additional expense of an upstairs deluxe room the day bed on the balcony adds to the views o...

Ahhhh… it’s blissful here. For people that have travelled to Bali many times before, and are starting to be fatigued of the dusty streets of Seminyak, and the tourist busses of Ubud – Try East Bali! My god… it’s another world up there. Little traffic, traditional villages, glorious white sand beaches, clear, calm water, extraordinary mountains and jungle. This is what a tropical island should look like.
Alila Manggis is right in the middle of all this, maybe 5 kms from Candi Dasa, an okay but sort of weird place. If you want a more exciting town, go the other way for 15 minutes to Padangbai – a great little port town with a couple of incredible beaches. Way more interesting than Candi Dasa.
The hotel is extremely well managed, with very well trained staff. Genuinely friendly people. The rooms are great, very comfortable. The pool is amazing, and you can swim at the beach if you choose. The restaurant is great too.
My tip is to hire a scooter and go for rides into the hills on the quiet village streets. It’s very scenic and you will feel very connected to “the real Bali”. Cliché, but true.
Ill def stay here again, I loved it. It is a BARGAIN for what it is. The same hotel would be triple the price in the South of Bali. Do it - Treat yourself… (and 100% def go to BaliAsli while you are there http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Restaurant_Review-g608484-d2232083-Reviews-Bali_Asli-Karangasem_Bali.html )

Room Tip: All rooms are good! Upstairs fractionally better,

This was our first stop after travelling over 24 hours and it could not have been a better experience. The property is open and relaxing and there are great views from the rooms to poolside to the restaurant. Rooms are simple and sleek in design with basic amenities. Sea Salt serves a lovely breakfast and dinner and there is the option of eating in the open air pavilion or a table can be set up on the lawn. The beach was a bit disappointing but fine for a stroll none the less, kind of dirty sand and trash was prevalent. We only saw one person swimming in the ocean during our stay. Always a nice breeze and it was nice to see local flavor. There are a few other hotels with limited dining options along the beach. If you go along the beach at night make sure it won't be high tide on the walk home. The cooking class and visit to market was really fun, great way to spend the morning. We were travelling with our teenage children and they enjoyed the property just as well. I would say about 50% of the guests were families and the other half couples. We stayed over Easter weekend. Hotel is about a 5-10 minute drive into Candidasa but the hotel is a much better experience.

We began our Bali holiday at Alila Manggis - a perfect choice. The rooms were very comfortable. We particularly appreciated the balcony where we could lounge on a comfortable bed with a magazine and a drink and enjoy the peaceful and relaxing surroundings. The grounds were beautifully maintained, the pool immaculate. Pool service was excellent. The staff throughout the resort were delightful - friendly and helpful. Budi, the concierge was fantastic, suggesting unique experiences. A traditional Bali Healer was one of them - very interesting. The cooking class with chef Santika was one of the best I have done. We toured the food market in Klungkung before learning of the many benefits of Balinese ingredients. We then made the paste which is the base to many poular Indonesian dishes. We have already impressed our friends back home with the results. We would definitely begin our next holiday in Bali with a longer stay.

Room Tip: We preferred the upstairs rooms with a balcony.

this resort is older than many but because of its timeless design, constant maintenance and beautiful environment it is just as alluring as it was when first built...everthing is designed to make you feel relaxed and put you in a romantic mood...the food ..views...the room... the restaurant ..breakfast even reception are all perfectly fashioned to give a laid-back ,tranquil surroundings..reading with a drink by my side on the daybed was a highlight...and the great weather !!....this is a friendly hotel with some of the nicest but simple gardens i've experienced..

Room Tip: all rooms have wonderfull views but i really liked the upstairs daybed

Luxury resort, the food was amazing!!The beach wasnt spectacular but atleast the waters good for cooling off because the pool is pretty warm it barely cools you down. the service is excellent! free use of internet, free shuttles to and from town about ten minute ride, the hotel has bikes you can use for free. We found candidasa town not great but this hotel is beautiful! good for relaxing theres not a great deal to do but lounge by the pool or take part in their yoga and tai chi lessons so 2 nights was enough for us. their products (after sun cream, shampoo...) were really nice too and i think they are even made in candidasa. Great place for relaxing.

We stayed here for 7 nights in early April.
Location: The hotel was approx 1 1/2 hours drive from Denpasar airport and was well worth it. It occupies spacious, well maintained grounds and all rooms look out towards the pool and then on to the sea. There is no beach to speak of really as it has been washed away by the sea, as is the case along most of the the coastline here. The hotel is in a reasonably remote location and there aren't really any shops or restaurants within walking distance however the hotel provides a free shuttle every 2 hours to the nearest town, Candidasa, which is about 5km away. We found this really useful.
Rooms: We had a ground floor room with a terrace which was lovely. The room was kept spotlessly clean. Fast wifi was available in your room and by the pool.
Service: The staff were extremely polite and very knowledgeable and attentive. They remembered your name and room number and always wanted to know 'what was your programme for today?'
Food: The food and drink prices were not too expensive and the food in particular was good value for money as it was to a very high standard! You could easily get lunch for under 200,000 rupiah for 2 people and on an evening the main courses were from 100,000 rupiah. The breakfast was superb - no buffet in sight, just perfectly cooked food made to order and well presented too. Free iced water was provided during the day by the poolside and there was complimentary afternoon tea and cakes from 3pm.
The hotel offered a range of trips - we went on a walk through the rice fields, a trek to Pura Lempuyang on the side of a mountain and to Ubud. The hotel provided drivers and guides (and cold towels and iced water) .
And for information, although it is beyond the hotel's control, the weather was beautiful for the whole time we stayed.
We would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a quiet but stylish base with the choice to relax or explore the island.
