The driver didn't know where Pearl was located so I just told him that we would look for the sign on the left hand side heading down Jalan Arjuna (Double Six) toward the beach. There was the sign and he pulled up. The driver looked a bit perplexed as the area was dark and the small shops closed.
Leoni and I walked down a driveway lined with tubular lights passed the 3 storey house under construction and entered into a compound. To the left of the compound the entry to the restaurant garden is located. The garden is spacious and enchanting with the tiny lights highlighting the centrally located feature tree.
We had booked and were allocated a seat under the tree. Antony, the Maitre' De and one of the brothers who runs the restaurant greets us and escorts us to our table. We discuss how we came upon Pearl and explain that some friends had dined here 12 months before and that it was a definite place to eat..an experience.
So, here we were. A large rabbit bounds up and sits next to us on the ground. As the rabbit preens itself Antony explains that they had bought 4 pet rabbits some years before and all but this one had been taken by local dogs. This rabbit it was revealed is a real street fighter and takes on the dogs and with his big teeth is a formidible foe. The rabbit's name is Pearl.
Seated we check the wine menu against the dishes on offer. The wine list is diverse and being Bali the prices of the wine reflect this. I select the Cape Discovery Red - Margaret River grapes - merlot and shiraz - bottled and vitinered in Bali.
The wine is sample and accepted.
The food selections were aided by a conversation with Jeremy the chef and Antony's brother.
Leoni - Lobster bisque - earthy seafood soup with lobster pieces topped in puff pastry
Noel - Scallop wrapped in parma on gravity defying mousse bases
L - Barramundi - delectable
N - Duck leg - crispy skinned perfection ( chef's recommendation)
Tasting plate - all delicious with the stand out to my palate the chocolate mousse
The staff are well trained and continually honed to maintain the standard.
The location as mentioned has a specialness that adds to the experience.
This restaurant (in my opinion) is not the domain of the 'all you can eat' crowd. The high level of presentation and haute cuisine style of the dishes deserves to to be savoured and enjoyed in the manner presented. Tres Bon.
