Reviewed May 7, 2009

I stayed at Saprtacvs, Bali in early May 2009 for the second time and both visits were very good experiences. The hotel is clean, well maintained and well located, being a short walk from the gay beach and a short taxi or bike ride from the restaurants on the southern side of the Oberoi hotel. It is far enough from the main road to avoid the constant scooter noise that hangs around most of suburban Bali, yet close enough for easy travel. Rooms are fine and comfortable, albeit more of the 3 star than 5 star variety. The outdoor bathrooms in most rooms are a treat in the humid Bali weather.

There are only about 15 rooms, which makes the hotel small enough to be personal, yet big enough for privacy if you just want to lie around the pool without being disturbed. The clothing optional thing really is optional, some do, some don't and there is no pressure or embarassment either way. This is also a male-only hotel (guests and staff), so there is no worry about hiding while the cleaner passes! The pool is in the centre of the hotel and tends to be a bit of a social spot in the afternoons, with some of the local boys turning up most afternoons.

What turns what would otherwise be a good place into something quite good is the staff. They are friendly, attentive and, when required, discreet. Unlike some hotels, their English is good and they all seem happy to have a chat or to leave you alone, if that is what you want. Rudi, the duty manager, leads them all in a pretty good operation. The owner is a friendly Aussie as well.

Granted the place is overstaffed, I have no problem with the stay. At least, the owner (Gary) is keeping the locals happily employed. Was visiting island for 40 hrs (2 nights) over 2 weeknights and it was low season. They closed the upper floor rooms and upgraded me to the deluxe room on the ground level. These rooms have open-air bathrooms. Only problem is that the overall place is rather dark (trees and eaves casting lots of shadows), leaving a potential mosquito problems. During sunset hours, the staff burns a mosquito repellant coil in the open-air bathrooms (AWESOME). Keep your doors closed... otherwise the mosquitoes will fly into the bedrooms.

Do not be fooled by the meek breakfast spread. The kitchen staff can cook a hot breakfast upon request (eggs, fried rice, etc). Regarding service and physical facilities, I have nothing bad to report about this place.

Since I am not of European/Caucasian heritage, the local rent boys avoid me. Plus, being able to speak local (Bahasa Malaysia and Bahasa Indonesia have about 85% common nouns/verbs), the locals don't know what to make of me. I saw two rent boys lounging around the pool, but I guess they paid an admission fee to use the pool and facilities. Just exercise caution when you invite them to your room.

Travelled from Seattle to Bali on December 19, 2008 for an eight day stay. After 24 hours of travelling, it was nice to be promptly met by the hotel driver at the airport directly after collecting my baggage.. I stayed in the Superior Garden Suite; a wonderful room with an outdoor shower. Would stay there again in a second. The staff was wonderful; very accomodating and friendly. Everything was very clean and the place looked great. One day I was trying to arrange a cab to take me into Kuta; when none were available, the hotel manager, Andre', drove me and my friend into town. Both Andre' and the owner, Gary, were great. Very much enjoyed meeting the other guests over breakfast at the hotel. The hotel is also only about a five minute walk from the gay beach and some great restaurants. A great location. I can't recommend it enough.

This is truly a gay oasis: the hotel is comfortable with all the amenities you need. The pool is medium sized but deep with sun-loungers around the side.

There are two bars (one is 24 hour) which is well stocked (though I drank it dry of gin one evening) and it offers cocktail specials every day.

The staff are great: Gary, the owner, adds that special touch by personally meeting every guest on arrival. Andre, the manager, also meets and greets customers and introduces his well trained staff.

The hotel's location is perfect for the gay traveller. It is a 5 minute stroll to the gay beach which is popular with the locals and tourists alike. Although not exclusively gay it tends to be busy at weekends. The beach is in fact an enclosure on a lawn on the beach edge with sunloungers and towels for hire, a good bar and food. There are also excellent masseurs who give a proper non-sexual Bali massages all for US$6!

The gay bars are a mere 5 minute taxi ride away (US$2) and the hotel allows friends to return with guests so long as they leave their ID at reception.

The hotel's restaurant is open-air and is beside the bar. The menu is good but with so many excellent restaurants outside many guests ate outside. That said, it is useful as a stop-gap and Andre makes a delicious chicken broth which is a meal in itself.

For those who may have mis-givings about the 'clothing optional' policy, during my 16 nights at Spartacvs only two guests let it all hang out. The remainder all dressed as they wished. The other guests were a good mixed bunch ranging from UK, Ireland (three of us!), US, Oz and even Madagasgar. Everyone mixed well (as the well known gay bar is named) and made friends. The Spartacvs staff also became friends and many a night was spent oggling eye candy outside Mixed Well.

All in all Spartacvus was good value, genuinely friendly and every effort was made to make guests at home. It was also good to be in an all male environment without women and children.

Best to book direct with the hotel web-site as you may qualify for free nights and transfers.

Thank you for your kind comments, the hotel has changed quite a bit since you last visited, our restaurant is now fully en-closed, a must for the wet season. Although the Prada Bar & Lounge is no longer open 24hrs, we now close at midnight, but will remain open if guests are still drinking.

From the moment you walk in the gate at this hotel you just know you are going to be looked after.
The owner greeted us at about 12 midnight, along with the other staff, a welcome drink to your room, the rooms were spacious and most had a bali style outside /inside bathroom/shower, i booked the garden suite , which at the time was about $us 90 i stayed about 10 days and enjoyed every miniute.
They have very good lanscape outdoor areas, a large pool and sun area and a spa, everything is kept so clean.
a light breakfast is included with the option of a hot breakfast, snacks lunch and dinner can also be served from a limited menu or they will order in for you from the many nearby restaurants, when i was there a BBQ was put on on saturday night the last people went to bed at 5 am.
Most of the time the guests would get together and go out for dinner, but that is the good thing you can do nothing or everything
If you are unsure what sort of person goes there don't worry you name it they were there ,all ages and looks there was me oh so cute, ex qantas queens, bears , guys with model looks ,gossip queens and guys from all. over the world
the staff are mostly gay, and is gay owned and operated
From Australia the airfare was about A$1000 and with the room . aand bar costs snacks, washing , mini bar ect ect i spend another $A10000 so all in all a great holiday and cheap as well.
Get the guys to pick you up at the airport it is so much easier
remember this is a gay hotel no women or children not even to visit your room The hotel is close to everything, taxis are very cheap, as i said you can do nothing or everything or everyone
but i not telling you about that , the after hours stuff is up to you.
ps very close to all gay bars ahd clubs, have a great time you won't regret it let me know how you went, go to their website for the photos , the photos are a very true image of the hotel, what you see is exactly what you get Steve

I’ve just returned from Bali were I stayed at a new Boutique Male only Resort – Spartacvs. This new male only resort is the only one of its kind in Bali and is situated in kerobokan close to many fine restaurants and only 5 minute walk to the gay beach. It’s situated in a very quite location and is only a short taxi ride to the clubs in Legian. The resort is newly opened and been operating for approx 6 months and managed by an Australia. On arrival I was greeted by Gary (the owner) who soon made me feel very much at home. I was shown around the resort and introduced to staff and other guests at the bar. Spartacvs consists of 12 rooms and one magnificent fully self contained 2 bedroom Villa. I stayed in one of the deluxe rooms called the “Pool Room” which was very large with all the facilities that you would expect, tastefully decorated and added bonus of a beautifully appointed indoor / outdoor bathroom. I travel to Bali at least once a year on Business collecting materials for my own Balinese Style resort in Port Douglas – Australia. Usually I would be running around Bali chasing suppliers, but this time I was able to relax around the pool while Gary and his staff organised the suppliers to come to me. They made my stay so enjoyable and saved me so much valuable time with there local knowledge of the area. I’ve stayed at a lot of resorts in Bali and this is the only resort that has made me feel like part of a family and I look forward to my next visit. Thanks to Gary and his team I miss you already.
