“Mixed feelings”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

On our current trip to Bali we thought we would try out various places that people have rated so highly and Mamasan was one of them. The experience ended up in Mixed feelings. First of all when we arrived they had no booking for us even though it had been booked that same morning while we sat in front of the person at our hotel who made it for us, the greeting seemed to go from welcoming to sorry no booking so go away. Luckily we must have had the magic name as when we said it, which was the person who took our booking a table became available. Don't get me wrong it wasn't the end of the world but a strange response when your name isn't on the list...

When seated the staff were very attentive and also knowledgeable about the menu, so friendly which seems to be the Bali way. We ordered drinks, wine and food. Then within about 2 minutes the starters arrived, bells start going off saying have we got somebody else's table... any way the starters were nice and tasty, part of an interesting SEA fusion type menu which keeps you interested simply reading it for a while... Starters done and the main course was going to come out immediately but we asked for it to be delayed, we wanted a night out not a 30 minute meal. After a while we said OK mains can come and again they were really tasty, duck red curry and lamb ribs.. You can see care and attention had been put into the food and the service continued to be great. We then decided on dessert which was a bad move, considering it is the last thing to leave an impression I really didn't like what we got. Pandan and mango trifle and banana cake. We just said what a shame a nice meal ends like this. My advice is stop after the mains

By this time tables began to become free and it seemed as though this meant they didn't need the table anymore as that was it, no more can we get you anything which I really wanted a coffee. In the end we gave up, paid and left...

So what can I say, nice restaurant building, interesting menu, great starters and mains, good value, bad dessert and up and down service. There seems to be a mix of people who come here from people who want a good night out with a nice meal to groups of Australian kids eating next to nothing and moaning about what they get and bringing the overall ambience down, smart casual becomes beachwear...

“Not impressed”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

We had such high expectations for Mama San after good recommendations from people who have been there before. Sadly this was not the case for us.
It seems to me this place must have been great once given the recommendations we got but they surely have let the standards slip now.
The wait staff seemed awkward and clumsy. We had trouble understanding them. Yes we were in a foreign country where English is not the first language, that is to be expected, but Seminyak is an international tourist destination and this must be addressed. We asked the waiters to explain the menu and they weren't capable of this. Their knowledge of the menu was appalling. The music was way too loud and with the bare concrete walls, sound seemed to be bouncing this way and that. I had trouble hearing my partner across the table.
The chairs were incredibly uncomfortable. One was a very low couch with the table pressed up against it so you couldn't get your feet under the table. There was nothing to support your back so you had to perch on the edge of the couch all night to reach the table. The other was a much higher very hard wooden chair so we were both sitting at different levels.
All of this even before the food came out. Our meals were brought out at different times to each other which left one of us sitting with a plate in front of us while the other had nothing. Not acceptable. Our used cutlery was re set from the previous dish for the next course. Not acceptable. A tall European man appeared at our table un announced at one stage and asked if everything was ok. We had no idea who he was and at first thought he was another diner hassling us about something. This actually made us laugh and confirmed how bad the service was here.
Now for the food. It was horrible. One dish stood out as quite possibly the worst dish I have ever eaten. I had the crispy pork confit and the meat was so dry and tough it was inedible. Presentation was lacking. Out of the 8 dishes we ordered only one was ok and only just ok. It was the stir fried prawn with chilli jam.
This place was overpriced and not good value at all. We don't mind paying top dollar if the place is good but not the case here sadly. We stumbled across a restaurant called Chandi in Seminyak which we went back to twice as the food was that good and a true fine dining experience as opposed to what we discovered here.

“Good but not the best around ”
Reviewed December 2, 2013 via mobile

Came with high expectations as friends had raved about the food. Entree was amazing but the main was a let down as were the cocktails. I had fish cakes and sifts he'll crab to start which was as good as it gets. The main we had the fried fish but the flavor was to overpowering and not that enjoyable. The fish was also not that great for res snapper of which I've eaten more than my share. Then the desert was way to sweet and not average. Still great food and I'd recommend it when in Bali but there are better restaurants around if you only have a couple of day. Barbacoa is a must!

“Still one of the best in Bali”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

We have been to Mamasan before and were not disappointed.
Great cocktails and the bar tender spent some time stepping us through the making of them.
The food was great, fresh with an awesome combination of flavours.
Service is slick from very polite wait staff.
Well priced, good sized serves.
Can recommend the lalot Vietnamese rolls, lamb ribs and crispy duck.
Will definitely be returning.
