“Excellent Balinese French Fusion cuisine”
Reviewed April 27, 2014

I had been told this was the best restaurant in the Seminyak/Legian area.
I whole heartedly agree! From our calamari salad and seared scallops for appetizers to the seared Hamachi and roasted duck for our entrees, we were in gastronomic heaven! The service and the ambiance was marvelous. Set against a beautiful expanse of rice paddies, you will not find any more enjoyable place to dine...the memory lingers on!

“Fantastic non-beach setting”
Reviewed April 27, 2014 via mobile

I've now been to Sardine 3 times and it's definitely good food with a fantastic non-beach setting amongst a rice field. I'd recommend this restaurant, but its no longer the standout it once was, with so many new fantastic restaurants in the Seminyak area.

We didn't start the night on the best note, with attitude from the matre 'd when booking and when requesting a table on the side of the restaurant which gets a breeze. This was resolved by the owners when they were made aware of the complaint.

The restaurant is open air and can be quite stuffy on a hot night if there is no breeze. Make sure you wear insect repellant if you're prone to getting bitten.

The cocktails are delicious and our entree was great. The seafood pasta however completely missed the mark. I would expect a restaurant at this level to make their own and not just drop it on a plate. The other meals in our group were presented beautifully. The sorbets and ice cream desserts were beautiful and well worth having.

“Very disappointed”
Reviewed April 25, 2014 via mobile

Our concierge booked the restaurant 24 hours in advance for us and 30 minutes before our booked time he came to us saying that the restaurant could no longer accommodate us as they had a large party that had arrived. At 8.30pm we then were in the position of needing to find an alternative restaurant with space. Fortunately Chandi in Seminyak had space and we had a great meal there.

“Impeccable service”
Reviewed April 24, 2014 via mobile

Impeccable service and the food followed in the same vein.A starter with martini, then clams that could not be beaten.Mains of crayfish risotto and fresh fish, sensational. This is fine dining at it's best.Although pricey it is a restaurant where you get value. As stated ,the service was world class with every little detail covered and the view over the rice fields just the right feel for a wonderful night.Thank you.

“Excellent fish”
Reviewed April 24, 2014

VIsited as a couple for lunch. We took a Blue Bird taxi and driver actually recognized the restaurant by name.

Walking into the Sardine made it pretty clear what this place is all about-- the venue. It is a tropical-themed restaurant with an incredibly beautiful rice patty and farm backdrop. There are few restaurants where you can dine in such setting. The main restaurant seating is an open-air covered area centered around a bar. Further back there are a few sofas before the patties begin. Then the patties stretch quite far out. There is one small sofa seating among the patties where you can take photos or relax in the middle of the fields.

Service was prompt and attentive--we were met by server as soon as we entered and led to a table in spite of a rather full house and no reservation. The server also offered to help take photos with the beautiful surrounding as backdrop.

In terms of F&B, Sardine's cocktail list has a special section featuring Arak-based cocktails-Arak being a local Balinese spirit. We ordered an Arak-based Mojito and an Arak-based sour drink. Interesting, but frankly the cocktails were pretty overwhelmed with mixers such that you couldn't taste much of the Arak (not very alcoholic). They tasted decently good, but a bit like soda pop with a bit of alcohol.

For food, Sardine offers a generally Western selection, mainly featuring fish dishes but also with some meats. We ordered a chicken salad to share for starts, which was well seasoned and balanced with some local herbs and flavours (i.e. mint, coriander, etc.). For mains, we got the Emperor Fish and Mahi Mahi. Sardine also features a catch of the day, but we didn't get it.

Both fish dishes were cooked to perfection. The preparations were quite simple--just fillets served with a side (rice and noodles for our two dishes), yet executed brilliantly. both fishes were moist and flaky, mildly seasoned and balanced with the mild sides. Overall, probably the best cooked fish I had this trip. The dessert menu was tempting but we had to pass due plans for afternoon tea later.

Overall, great food in a great setting--definitely worth a try if you are in Kerobokan.
