Description: Bali Asli is located in Gelumpang village, near the town of Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem regency, in the North East of Bali. About 2 hours drive from the airport, and 30 minutes from Candidasa village, and 30 minutes from Amed village. Nestled in the foot hills of Mount Agung, Bali's most sacred mountain, surrounded by rice fields, there is not a building to be seen. Bali Asli promotes Balinese cuisine and culture without exploiting it or it's people. We embrace our community, supporting those who fish, farm and forage in the near by fields, ocean and jungle. Our menu offers authentic Balinese food using a traditional Balinese style kitchen, cooking on wood-fired, mud brick stoves, allowing the real flavours of Bali to shine. Most of our ingredients are either grown in our garden, in our neighbour's garden or purchased from the local market The cooking school runs unique classes themed on "a day in the life of..." every class includes an adventure into local areas off the beaten track. Weather it is learning how to plant rice or plough with a cow, fishing in a jukung canoe and cooking on an open fire or making cocktails from cashew nut wine, our students always leave with fond memories and new skills to experiment with when they get home.

A real treasure. We wrote back and forth with Penny ahead of our trip to Bali, as we were making an 'amazing race' type trip for extended family. Penny was wonderful planning a day for us - a scavenger hunt for the drive from Sanur, a trip to the market with a guide to gather ingredients, and then a morning of learning about Bali culture and cooking. The staff was wonderful, and the view of the mountain behind it all was stunning. And the food we cooked was amazing. This was a great way to get away from the busy-ness of Ubud and the beach for the day - well worth the trip!

Overall this is very wonderful view, poor food, craving juice.

I can say quite a bad timing we went there, windless day. I think because around 3.10pm, there are starting to close.

The waiter all look tired and low energy, still try to serve us with smile less. So fortunate we got chance talk with penny, the owner, which I mention we need spicy Balinese style. She got remind her chef but unfortunately turn out our megibung is too sweet, totally not Balinese style that I had take before in the village. Only accepted is the tum, like Malaysia otak-otak, the rest average or poor. Either this is hype or really bali asli(original). I believe I should give 2nd chance for them again in the future.

The drink all is chill and refreshing, view of the mount agung are one of the best scenery in Bali here, just not food=overrated.

Don't take my words, go and try it for yourself when you around tirta gangga, prove me wrong!

P.s I love penny, just not the food! Prove me wrong next time, penny!

Dear Louiss L,
Im very sad and surprised to hear that your experience at Bali Asli a few days ago was not up to your expectations. It had indeed been a very busy day, however that is no reason for the waiters to look tired and for the food to be unsatisfactory.
I can assure you that you for you to react like this to the meal we served to you, it was not to the standard that we normally serve.
I have discussed this issue with the team and all now understand that we do not stop running the race until we have reached the finish line.
I thank you very much for your honesty and for inviting others to give Bali Asli a second chance to prove you wrong.

Our guide Made had the idea of bringing us to this wonderful restaurant. The view and the food is amazing and we will certainly come back for cooking classes.

We travelled from our hotel in Nusa Dua to have lunch at Bali Asli and it was well worth the two hour car trip. The food was beautifully presented, flavoursome, fresh and delicious. We both agreed it is one of the best meals we have had in Bali, and will definitely return to this beautiful place. The restaurant has a fabulous outlook over the rice fields, views of the volcano in the background, and was away from the hustle and bustle we expect in Bali which made for a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Penny was very friendly and informative, and the whole experience was memorable. Thank you to Penny and all the staff for a great day.

Featuring a terrific view (even on a cloudy day), this is a very special place for lunch. The staff was very attentive with welcome drinks ready within minutes of our arrival. The tasting platter was plenty for two and contained many different authentic dishes.
