Description: Bali Asli is located in Gelumpang village, near the town of Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem regency, in the North East of Bali. About 2 hours drive from the airport, and 30 minutes from Candidasa village, and 30 minutes from Amed village. Nestled in the foot hills of Mount Agung, Bali's most sacred mountain, surrounded by rice fields, there is not a building to be seen. Bali Asli promotes Balinese cuisine and culture without exploiting it or it's people. We embrace our community, supporting those who fish, farm and forage in the near by fields, ocean and jungle. Our menu offers authentic Balinese food using a traditional Balinese style kitchen, cooking on wood-fired, mud brick stoves, allowing the real flavours of Bali to shine. Most of our ingredients are either grown in our garden, in our neighbour's garden or purchased from the local market The cooking school runs unique classes themed on "a day in the life of..." every class includes an adventure into local areas off the beaten track. Weather it is learning how to plant rice or plough with a cow, fishing in a jukung canoe and cooking on an open fire or making cocktails from cashew nut wine, our students always leave with fond memories and new skills to experiment with when they get home.

“Taste Sensation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2012

Had so many recommendations to visit Bali Asli we finally made it there and it was so worth the visit.
The view is absolutely stunning and even the drive there was so interesting.
We had met Penny, the owner previously and she greeted us very warmly.
The menu is different, but inviting and the food was sensational. Fresh, spicy, colourful and so tasty.
Our only criticism was the price of the drinks. I think the most expensive we had come across our entire visit.
Apart from this, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and lunch and will be returning in a hurry!

“Perfect day at Bali Asli!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

We booked "A day in the life of a fisherman" at Bali Asli. Penny (owner and head chef) organized the transport from Ubud to Bali Asli. It took us more than 2 hrs to get there, but it was definitively worth it. Due to the very high waves the fishingtrip was cancelled and Penny took us on a trekking tour to the nearby villages. The tour was wonderful - we stopped at a very small village to have some coffee, saw the preparations for a huge village ceremony and experienced the real Bali. After 2 hrs we came back to the restaurant and started the cooking lesson. Penny is such a wonderful person - enthusiastic, warm and a great teacher! Food, drinks, staff and views were also AMAZING - the day was the highlight of our week in Bali!

“Sensational - top of the best things to do and see in Bali”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

Bali Asli is stunning with the most spectacular views and bathrooms in Bali! The cooking course is fabulous with a choice of experiences to choose from. Our day commenced at 8am with a visit to the local market to buy fresh local produce. Plenty opportunity to taste, see and take in new tastes and sights. Owner and executive chef Penny Williams is an absolute delight full of enthusiasm and absolutely authentic to the Balinese way of cooking. The insight gained and our first hand experience made for an unforgettable and fantastic day - a definite must on your 'what to do in Bali list' six stars and highly recommended!
