The Owner of this hotel planned things right! She blended local flare, beautiful location, stunning views, and low-key elegance - all in one place. Although not a 5-star hotel, there is sooooo much to like about it!
First of all, it is located in a village, on the ocean - far away from the crowds of Denpasar and other beach communities. Fishing boats line the ocean, departing at 5am and returning around 8am...watching the villagers prepare, depart, and return is an experience in itself. Roosters crowing, cows mooing, waves (not many), sun rising as a back-drop...it is priceless. The local villagers provide services and talk to you on the beach...no, not like Mexico where they bug you every 5 min, rather just simple ...do you want to go for a boat ride? do you need snorkel equipment? how about a massage? They'll let you come fishing with them, and even invite you into their homes...I love how the hotel promotes this from the locals...it's a win-win situation.
The hotel itself is small. There are about 6-7 independent villas, 1-2-3 bedroom. We were right on the oceanfront with a patio area, 2-story, 1 BR down, 1 up with a fabulous 'outdoor' bathroom...most doors on all the villas, inside and out are carved wood, décor is local and well-done. There are fans and A/C, or you could just open the windows! No screens, so watch the bugs (depending on the time of year). The stay includes breakfast in the 6 table dining area near reception - all open air, or you can sit on the floor with low-lying tables for 2. Plenty of choices for breakfast, and the fresh squeezed juices are marvelous.
The staff was courteous, friendly, and helpful. Always smiling! The pool, though small, was delicious and refreshing. There were 2 outdoor showers - one near the pool and one coming in from the beach. They have a small shop out front, can arrange day tours. Most of the local restaurants will actually pick you up and drop you off (just tip the driver). We thought the food at Life in Amed was GOOD! Always a special - and the fresh fish always a good choice. Prices were good...
I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. It was so peaceful (well, the 4 am roosters were a bit noisy, but added to the local experience).... I would say if you like having a local experience combined with nice accommodations, stay here.
