“Best local experience at a hotel of this caliber!”
Reviewed December 15, 2013

The Owner of this hotel planned things right! She blended local flare, beautiful location, stunning views, and low-key elegance - all in one place. Although not a 5-star hotel, there is sooooo much to like about it!

First of all, it is located in a village, on the ocean - far away from the crowds of Denpasar and other beach communities. Fishing boats line the ocean, departing at 5am and returning around 8am...watching the villagers prepare, depart, and return is an experience in itself. Roosters crowing, cows mooing, waves (not many), sun rising as a back-drop...it is priceless. The local villagers provide services and talk to you on the beach...no, not like Mexico where they bug you every 5 min, rather just simple ...do you want to go for a boat ride? do you need snorkel equipment? how about a massage? They'll let you come fishing with them, and even invite you into their homes...I love how the hotel promotes this from the locals...it's a win-win situation.

The hotel itself is small. There are about 6-7 independent villas, 1-2-3 bedroom. We were right on the oceanfront with a patio area, 2-story, 1 BR down, 1 up with a fabulous 'outdoor' bathroom...most doors on all the villas, inside and out are carved wood, décor is local and well-done. There are fans and A/C, or you could just open the windows! No screens, so watch the bugs (depending on the time of year). The stay includes breakfast in the 6 table dining area near reception - all open air, or you can sit on the floor with low-lying tables for 2. Plenty of choices for breakfast, and the fresh squeezed juices are marvelous.

The staff was courteous, friendly, and helpful. Always smiling! The pool, though small, was delicious and refreshing. There were 2 outdoor showers - one near the pool and one coming in from the beach. They have a small shop out front, can arrange day tours. Most of the local restaurants will actually pick you up and drop you off (just tip the driver). We thought the food at Life in Amed was GOOD! Always a special - and the fresh fish always a good choice. Prices were good...

I can't say enough wonderful things about this place. It was so peaceful (well, the 4 am roosters were a bit noisy, but added to the local experience).... I would say if you like having a local experience combined with nice accommodations, stay here.

Room Tip: The 2BR villas are right on the beach, the 3BR faces the beach and has a huge area. The 1 BRs face...

Nov. 2013, room was the Sunrise, on the beach: The hotel has beautiful grounds and landscaping set in an area where there are locals fishing on the ocean side of the hotel and rural farm life on the other side of the hotel. We found it not only interesting but exciting to live with the local population and watch how their lives unfold each day for the four days of our stay. As mentioned in many other reviews this property is a little off the regular tourist track which is what we were looking for. The property and room are clean and A/C, fans, mini-fridge and facilities all worked good. The pool provides a relaxing area and water is refreshing after the hot days. Beach as mentioned in many reviews has the local fishing boats on it so not really for sun tanning but provides entertainment with the activity of the fishermen and their families as they bring in the catch. Good snorkeling area, we are amateurs and found it amazing for our level of snorkeling. Did not find the few sellers on the beach to be overbearing and we rented snorkels from them and purchased some small items, and also shared a few laughs with them. I believe you do get a taste of the real Bali and to meet some great local people by staying at this hotel.
Service was good and would put it at an average level compared to the other two properties we stayed at on Bali, (one being a similar boutique style property outside Ubud) I believe the owner of this hotel has the Sunrise Cottage on the beach priced a little high for what’s included, especially when on double occupancy. A little better explanation of room and facilities would be nice at the check-in and also once in the room. Would be nice to watch the early morning sunrise with coffee on our balcony but we did not have ability to make coffee in room. The food was good however the included breakfast would be on the small side for some people. (eg. One crepe and fruit dish) Hot water in the shower did not work on several occasions, and even though we watch very little TV while travelling it would be nice to have something a little larger than a 14 inch tube tv. These are not huge and do not consider these deal breakers but at the price paid feel they should be adjusted. Overall this is a nice property and would stay there again and believe a 4 out of 5 rating is fair for our stay/experience.

Room Tip: Eat at the hotel but also try restaurant Sails about 10 minute walk.

Beautifull intimate boutique hotel, we loved staying here.
On the street side you find chicken running around, families working and hanging around their houses, and some local shops. On the beach side you find the fishermen's boats, and in between the beach and the road is this beautifull hotel.
Flowers everywhere, 2 beautifull pools, great room with outdoor shower. Very friendly staff, and great food as well. I read one comment here that the view from the restaurant is "on a parking lot", but that does not do justice in my opinion. Technically you can call it a parking lot, but I would rather call it a courtyard where sometimes a car is parked.
We did not have time to look for the beach on the right side, where you should be able to lay down, swim, snorkel etc, but in front of the hotel this was not really possible: the whole beach is covered with fishermen's boats. As we were diving every day we did not feel the need to go look for it.
I would highly recommend this hotel.

I stayed here with a friend after spending a week in Nusa Dua for a conference. “Life” is a perfect little oasis of calm and tranquillity – you really feel that you are seeing the authentic side of Bali while still enjoying luxurious facilities. The bungalows and pool area are beautiful and the beach is right on your doorstep. We enjoyed watching the fishermen coming back with the morning catch and were invited to enjoy fresh grilled mackerel with the locals!

There was a cremation in the temple on the hill early (6am) on the morning of our second day which was quite noisy with lots of chanting. The hotel do provide ear plugs but we felt this added to the charm and was a unique insight to something we wouldn’t ordinarily see.

As other reviewers have commented, the locals do offer to sell you massages or snorkels when you first go onto the beach but we did not feel pressured and when we checked-in had been advised what the going rate was for these services. The coral is just off the shore and is absolutely stunning with a large variety of fish so it is worth hiring the snorkelling gear.

The rooms are clean and comfortable – the open air showers are amazing and the restaurant is excellent with plenty of choice including fresh seafood. We can't wait to come back and visit again!

We had 3 days and 2 nights here and stayed in the Paradiso Villa. The rooms were designed beautifully. The beds were Bali style and slept very well. Sunrise over the beach was unobstructed and amazing to watch. Snorkeling point is right off the beach in front of the resort at high tide.

You get into an organic rhythm in Bali, up early with the sun, and in bed early as well.

There is alot to see here, the gardens are wrapped around the bungalows. The frangipani trees are everywhere, full to the brim with flowers and birdsong in the early hours if you walk. The pool is charming and relaxing. We loved the comfortable sun lounges too, a nice place to read and relax.

The restaurant serves nice food. Both Indonesian and Western palettes catered for well. Breakfast is included in the tarrif and it was varied and delicious.

Thank you Life_in_Amed_Boutique_Hotel. A great 3 days!

I would recommend a stay here.

Just spent 3 nights at Life in Amed and had a fantastic time. The food was excellent, the staff extremely helpful and friendly, and the cottages were perfect. Amed is a peaceful and lush location away from a lot of the excesses of tourism. It was good to enjoy some of the more traditional aspects of Bali life, such as listening to Gamelan music and watching the preparations for a Hindu ceremony. Thanks for a great stay and we hope to be back.
