Stayed for a week with the family, two grown-ups and two kids (1½ and 3 years old), as a first stop on a months stay on Bali. Very nice hotel with lush gardens just next to the beach. Bungalows (63 US$ per night incl breakfast, not seaside) on the small side for the four of us although there is a loft which we could have used if the kids had been a bit older. All in all not ideal for small kids, but the pool worked well and the beach was very convenient for playing with toys in the sand and evening walks before dinner.

Food was really good, both local and western dishes although the supposed Finnish meat balls tasted suspiciously similar to Swedish meatballs…

Great arrangement with pick up from the airport and drive to our next hotel in Lovina, even included children seat in the car.

What else…

No vendors. No night life. No shopping. Just relaxing days in the sun...

Some mosqi

Amazing sunrises with literally hundreds of boats returning from fishing in the strait.

Visibility in the water was not great during our stay so I can’t judge the snorkelling outside the hotel, but we went for a for an over the day trip to the next beach in Amed further away from the main road (very flexible taxi rates, 30 000 on the way there and half that on the way back) were the snorkelling was great even including a wreck and also a beach more suited for swimming.

our family stayed at the santai resort in april of 2008 for 11 days. the hotel organised our transport from our previous hotel in ubud and we arrived at mid-day at first we were unimpressed by several asspects of the hotel most striking of which was the smallness of the hotel which felt over crowded and cramped: when we entered our ('larger' ocean view) room it appeared smaller than the pictures on the website sugested and was hardly adaquate for 2 adults and 2 children as we were promised however it would be fine for 2 people. the rooms seemed a bit runn down but well kept and clean and the outdoor bathroom was lovely (complete was gorgeous fruit bats in the eaves) the pool at the hotel was clean but small it would be fine for cooling off after sunbathing but if your thinking of doing lengths be prepared to do thousands. and now to the best aspect of staying here the snorkeling. you pass through the hotel door onto the beach(which was black sand and pebbles and not for sunbathing on due to all the traditional fishing boats pulled up onto it) and walk down to the waters edge you then swim about 15 feet and you come across coral it starts off quite unprepossessing but soon turns into a colorful and structurally varied reef populated by countless fish. the water is crystal clear and the coral is pristine and is the best coral for of the beach diving i have ever seen. the coral is only outdone by the kaleidoscopic array of fish the swarm the reef there is a huge variety of fish from tiny electric blue damselfish to hundreds of different species of butterfly fish through to a small blue spotted sting rays.

the restaurant is adequate but is easily outdone by the local wurungs across the road which serve lovely traditional balinese food. i would highly recomend renting a car to explore the island as there are a few lovely beaches just before you reach Candidasa (consut your guide book)

I LOVED Santai! We loved Amed so much that we actually cancelled two of our nights at the Four Seasons in Ubud because we couldn't leave. We had a villa right on the pool (NOTE: I wouldn't stay in one of the back villas.) It is literally like 20 feet from the ocean. The beach here is not for laying out but it's interesting to walk down and watch the boats, sunsets and rise.

Our villa had a great porch with a very comfy couch and chair - we relaxed here each night with wine and reading material. So peaceful. The pool is fantastic, the grounds are beautiful with lots of lush flowers. The staff puts offerings and flowers everywhere. We ate at the restuarant and it was very good. They have a decent selection of Australian wine too which was a treat. It was very easy to arrange diving as they are affiliated with Eco Dive (great dive shop).

At night, enjoy just listening to the waves from the ocean and the very clean and comfy room. The only thing i didn't really like was the outdoor bathroom but it was really no big deal.

The Santai Hotel in Amed is an excellent choice. We went there in early March 2007 and stayed for 3 days. It's in a good position, on the beach but near to a couple of other hotels so not too isolated. The restaurant isn't terrific but there are other choices nearby. There's a choice of rooms - bungalows to the front and smaller rooms to the back. We stayed in one of the back rooms and found it very quiet and comfortable. The rate was reasonable - $40 a night - but you could get extremely good deals if you turn up after 8pm and they've got a spare room. Lovely pool, pretty gardens and very helpful staff.

Despite the heading, this is not in Candidasa.

We loved this little hotel. We had the best room in the place overlooking the pool and with a bit of a sea view too.

The pool was stunning, the food was delicious and our room was great. It was expensive but I think it was worth it.

The beach wasn't too pleasant. I tried to snorkel from in fron of the hotel and got dragged across the coral as I tried to get in. Round the corner to the left looked much better though.

Amed seemed totally geared up for diving so if you or your partner do not dive, you will need to be happy sitting by the pool all day as there is nothing to do in Amed but dive. Eco dive down the road ran a very efficient centre. I didn't dive with the other dive centre (Euro Dive) but at a dive site, their equipment looked good and they seemed to be well organised.

I am giving the Santai in Amed, Bali a neutral/average rating because the price of the hotel during the high season (~$115 a night for a "deluxe" room- and this didn't include the "service charge" for use of the credit card) was quite high for what you got. The rooms were individual Bales, with little porches out front that contained a few chairs and a coffee table. The furniture was nice and typical for a small Balinese hotel (dark wood, fairly large bed). The Bale wasn't sealed perfectly and the AC never quite kept the room as cool as we would have preferred. The room does come with amenities like towels, soap and shampoo (but note that the hotel threatens to charge your credit card if you take the shampoo with you). There was a very lovely pool right by the beach, and the landscaping around the pool was quite nice. The beach outside the hotel was acceptable, but it was more a beach that is used by local fisherman (to store their boats). The hotel is fairly central by Amed's standards, but note that places are fairly spread out in Amed. I would recommend this place, but maybe in the low season when the rates are lower.
