“So disappointing!”
Reviewed April 26, 2012

When I booked this hotel, I wanted a room overviewing the sea, in a quiet location of the hotel. They told me that all the rooms overviewed the street, so that I had to book a whole villa (a lot more expensive) to have a sea view. I did. But on the whole, il was all so disappointing!!!! Yes, the villa (juste opposite the swimming-pool) was big and globally nice, but...

1. The swimming-pool was quite a nice view, but it also brought a lot of noise, since people were swimming there in the evening, and shouting...I was going to Bali to have some peace and quiet, it was a total failure. Plus, the beach opposite the hotel is not really worth of interest (it is a beach of pebbles, and the view is not exceptional).

2. The swimming-pool was not clean: when you get out of it, your skin feels oily and greasy, and there are lots of bugs (quite big cockroaches) and ants...yurk. The sheets have dirty and strange stains on them...

3. The wifi was supposed to be free. In fact, it didn't work at all, and I was offered the lame explanation that it was because of the hotel being located in a valley (?!?!). Globally, the staff was NOT very agreable. Especially at dinner. Which was not good at all. There were dances there, but not very authentic: just for the tourists...and the food was not especially good...

4. The air conditioning did not work properly, and there was ice in the welcome cocktails (I had bowel problems following that). No TV.

The only good point I found in this hotel was its "sunset cruise": you get on a fishing boat with a fisherman (usually he speaks only Balinese), and you watch the sun go down. Astonishing (but expensive). And the bathroom (exterior) is practical.
So, if you have a choice, go somewhere else...this place is really too expensive for what it offers!!!

I just spent six nights at the Santai with my mum and dad, and for the three of us our garden view villa was perfect. We loved sitting out on the porch listening to the birds, insects and the sea (though take plenty of mozzie spray!) I slept upstairs like a Walton, on a very comfy mattress looking down over the double bed. The shower was one of the best in Bali, great temperature and good pressure! Loved the outdoor bathroom in general really, the hairdryer was a nice touch as you don't often see them unless you're in a five star resort.

I loved the pool... not quite infinity as once you're in it you can't see the sea, even though it's a metre away. Although, if it was an infinity pool the kids and locals on the beach would have been able to look in and ask us to buy more jewellry than they already did (this wasn't really a problem, they would just stand in the doorway to the beach every now and then and hold necklaces up,.. very sweet kids!) The pool was great, we spent many hours reading books and ordering fruit juices, cokes and Bintangs on the blue sunloungers. The staff are all lovely!

The food at Santai is well priced and delicious - one of the best salads in Bali is the DIY Salad, choose what you want in it and they'll provide. I had the grilled chicken, blue cheese and sweetcorn one twice. The grilled tuna dinner was also great, as was the seafood gratin. Delicious. There's dancing and the gamelan twice a week and we got to see both. The restaurant was full for these events and gave the place a very nice atmosphere, especially with the full moon.

Breakfast was OK, though I've had better included in cheaper homestays in other parts of Bali. It was pretty standard, you choose 2 things from the menu such as eggs, fruit, pancakes, etc, though you only get one slice of toast with your eggs. Can't really complain. Ask for no ice or water in your fruit juice if you want it pure. We had very watery pineapple juice on a few occasions.

I went diving with the guys from the BaliKu dive resort, who will come pick you up. Ask for Murray and Nico and tell them Becky sent you, they know the reefs like the back of their hands and are super nice, incredibly professional guys (Nico speaks 5 languages). You won't regret diving with them in Amed. Snorkelling is OK off the beach in front of the resort but be careful of the coral. Walking on the beach can be quite tricky without shoes.

The WIFI at Santai was always very fast, especially in the restaurant area. I had no problem doing my work. For a change of scene and some seriously excellent food, turn left out of the hotel and walk for three minutes till you see the Titi Sedana warung on your right. Amazing local food and super cheap - though it will take a long time to get your food. Take a book and be patient!

All in all I would highly recommend Santai for anyone travelling in Amed and would definitely stay again. Beautiful, cosy, comfy and well-maintained. Really made our time in Amed special. Thanks!

We were very happy with our stay at the Santai Hotel in Amed. The Amed area is a bit rough around the edges but it was very pleasant at the Santai. We were in one of the garden bungalows which was spaceous and had a great shower (one of the best on our trip) and a small garden in the bathroon. We rarely use air conditioning when we travel, but were thankful to have it here due to the heat at night. The staff was very pleasant. They bring hot water for tea and coffee to the front deck in the morning for early risers. We enjoyed the food at the restaurant (great tuna steak and enjoyed the tortilla chips for an afternoon snack.) A dance performance was provided one of the nights we were there. It was a bit challenging getting to other restaurants so we stayed close to home. We did go to Sail Restaurant one evening because they provided transportation, but it was not as nice as we were lead to believe in reviews. The pool was great, but the beach was not so nice (short and needed to be cleaned up) There was a much nicer beach north up the road; not a long walk but you are walking on the road with no shoulder. The massages that we had in the open-air pavillion by the beach were quite nice. It was very easy to arrange transportation through the hotel such as a trip to Tirta Gangga Water Temple and on to our next hotel in Sideman. I would definitely recommend this hotel in the Amed area.

We have decided on Santai after seeing a few other neibourging hotels. It has a nice bungalows - they serve coffe each morning on the small porch overlooking the sunrise over the sea. Food in the restaurant was very good. The beach is small and grey but the sea is deep enough to swim almost immediately and if you snorkle you can watch the reef right away.

My wife and I stayed here for the second time with our family after enjoying it so much the first time. The rooms are rustic but very comfortable and the location and layout is beautiful. Any more relaxing I think your heart would stop beating.
The only disappointment was the evening meals and this is due to the cost against the size of the servings. The food quality, whilst OK, doesn't carry the heaviest price tag in Bali we have come across, and the service was very slow.
Stay here ! It's a great place and we would stay again. Just eat out. There are several good quality places along the coast.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the three ocean view bungalows.

We were 3 friends travelling together and we spent 3 nights at Santai. We had a fantastic stay. The setting is beautiful with a lot of vegetation around the bungalows. Our bungalow was spacious with a stunning bathroom. Fresh flowers everyday in the bathroom and coffee each morning on the patio were a very nice touch. The staff was very friendly but yet professionnal and were extremely helpful. The beach is right outside of the hotel and you can snorkel right out there (although will need shoes to walk into the sea or wear your fins). WiFi connection available. The only downside is that the resort is somewhat outside of the village of Amed so it's not really possible to walk at night if you want to go eat outside. The hotel restaurant serves excellent food although a bit expensive. Would definitely recommend, as it was said before, it's affordable luxury.

This place could be perfect - apart from v minor points: the cheapest toilettries you can imagine in the ensuites. Having a choice of just 2 items from a sticky, laminated breakfast menu ( a slice of bacon with your eggs is extra!), no where to hang your ntowel near the shower - it is the little things that spoil a potential star. Location is superb, staff excellent and accommodation of a v high standard. Sort out the minor stuff and enevr have a vacancy again.
Food v good but expensive for Bali. fantastic local place dead opposite called C'est Bon does a graet menu of authentic local food. Your served by the cook who also takes your order, and washes up afterwards!
