As an expat living in South Bali I must go sometimes to North in order to find good diving locations. My last trip led to Amed, a remote but blooming village. Since I always love to try different restaurants or warungs I wandered along the 5-6 km long main road of the village. I immediately spot a new place opened recently on the hillside part of the road and after a warm welcome I found myself in a cozy arm-chair gazing the calm ocean. What for a starter? It was not an easy choice. My throat demanded the usual small Bintang but something else glued my eyes to the menu. A drink with basil?? Ok, let’s give it a try. A couple of minutes later the smiling and decent waiter put a long, nicely dressed glass on the table. OMG. It was admirable, sweet, and sour, with a strong touch of the basil-feeling. Forget the Bintang! Soto ayam came for the soup. Best ever, no doubt. Excellent so far, but how to judge a chef really well? My regular method is the steak. I ordered it with vegetables and already gave a big smile for the waiter for the question: “Medium”? Hoping for the best and not expecting the worst I replied the usual medium-rare. Well done. OK, it was perfectly done, medium rare, fine taste for the meat coz the chef didn’t want to suppress it by using a lot of spices. Good veggies.
I am not the kind of gourmet who drinks coffee after meal but when I realized that the restaurant is equipped by a La Pavoni I decided to have one espresso. Thrilling, trust me.
I came for 2 nights but extended it by one more and the reason was Gusto. I didn’t take the breakfast in my hotel, but at Gusto. I almost lived in the resto when I was not underwater. Lovely atmosphere, design with taste, clean restroom, friendly staff and management, let alone the excellent food. It’s a must.
