We spent only one night at the Palm Garden, as we had booked elsewhere for our first three nights in Amed, but we were very happy to have at least that one day and night. The grounds and rooms are beautifully designed and in immaculate condition. The beds were very comfortable and the food in the restaurant is varied and delicious. It's right on the beach, with excellent snorkeling, but when we got tired of that we hit the lovely pool. My daughter and I also enjoyed massages in the spa. There is a small shop with reasonably-priced local items. The staff were very friendly and spoke English well, though they were happy to talk with us in Indonesian (very slowly) as we are learning the language.
The only reason I didn't rate the Palm Garden higher is that they lack wi-fi. They do have a PC available for your use in the reception area, however.
I would highly recommend the Amed area for your trip to Bali. The diving and snorkeling is great and the area is very relaxed. If you feel the need to leave the water, you can head up into the highlands for some hiking. We had a problem with flies when we visited in December. We were told by a number of folks that the problem goes away after the papaya season is over, sometime in March. Kuta is a complete zoo, and the beach looked like a landfill when we visited. Try Amed.
